Abstract

The present disclosure provides power source assemblies aboard a watercraft. The power source assemblies can include: an engine having a crankshaft; a variable ratio drive assembly operably engaged with the crankshaft; and an engine powered accessory operably engaged with the variable ratio drive assembly. The present disclosure also provides methods for distributing power aboard a watercraft from a crankshaft of an engine. The methods can include: using a crankshaft of an engine to drive a variable ratio drive assembly; and using the variable ratio drive assembly to drive an engine accessory over a narrower RPM range while operating the crankshaft over a wider RPM range.

Claims (22)

1. A power source assembly aboard a watercraft, the power source assembly comprising:

an engine having a crankshaft;

a variable ratio drive assembly operably engaged with the crankshaft to drive an engine powered accessory over a narrower RPM range while the crankshaft operates over a wider RPM range; and

an engine powered accessory operably engaged with the variable ratio drive assembly.

2. The power source assembly of claim 1 wherein the variable ratio drive assembly is operably engaged with the crankshaft via a shaft or geared connection.

3. The power source assembly of claim 1 wherein the variable ratio drive assembly is operably engaged with the crankshaft via a belt or chain.

4. The power source assembly of claim 1 wherein the variable ratio drive assembly is configured to selectively adjust its ratio of input RPM to output RPM.

5. The power source assembly of claim 1 wherein the engine powered accessory is a water pump.

6. The power source assembly of claim 1 wherein the engine powered accessory is an alternator.

7. The power source assembly of claim 1 wherein the engine powered accessory is a hydraulic pump.

8. The power source assembly of claim 1 wherein the engine powered accessory is a compressor.

9. A method for distributing power aboard a watercraft from a crankshaft of an engine, the method comprising:

using a crankshaft of an engine to drive a variable ratio drive assembly; and

using the variable ratio drive assembly to drive an engine accessory over a narrower RPM range while the crankshaft operates over a wider RPM range.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising using the variable ratio drive assembly to selectively adjust its ratio of input RPM to output RPM using one or more of centrifugal force, centripetal force, input engine RPM, output engine accessory RPM, power availability from the engine, and/or power consumption of the engine accessory.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein the engine accessory is an alternator.

12. The method of claim 11 further comprising charging one or more batteries, and/or powering one or more electrical loads, while operating the alternator over the narrower RPM range.

13. The method of claim 9 wherein the engine accessory is a water pump.

14. The method of claim 13 further comprising cooling the engine with the water pump while operating the water pump over the narrower RPM range.

15. The method of claim 13 further comprising at least one ballast compartment aboard the watercraft, and moving ballast to/from the at least one ballast compartment with the water pump while operating the water pump over the narrower RPM range.

16. The method of claim 13 further comprising at least one livewell aboard the watercraft, and moving water to/from the at least one livewell with the water pump while operating the water pump over the narrower RPM range.

17. The method of claim 13 further comprising at least one bilge compartment aboard the watercraft, and moving bilge water to/from the at least one bilge compartment with the water pump while operating the water pump over the narrower RPM range.
