Abstract

Disclosed is a data recording unit and data recording system for use in connection with a vehicle, such as a train, a locomotive of a train, a railcar of a train, and the like.

Claims (22)

1. A data recorder unit comprising:

at least one data recorder enclosure configured to house at least one internal component;

at least one data processing unit located in the at least one data recorder enclosure and configured to receive data input from at least one data source associated with a vehicle; and

at least one storage device in communication with the at least one data processing unit and configured to store the data input received by the at least one data processing unit,

wherein the at least one storage device is at least one local storage device located within one or more of a crash-proof or fire-proof enclosure positioned within the at least one data recorder enclosure, and

wherein the at least one storage device comprises a network-attached storage device, the network-attached storage device comprising plural separate logical partitions, wherein a portion of the data input is stored within one logical partition and another portion of the data input is stored within another logical partition.

2. The data recorder unit of claim 1 , wherein the at least one storage device comprises a solid-state storage device.

3. The data recorder unit of claim 1 , further comprising a remote storage device in communication with the at least one data processing unit.

4. The data recorder unit of claim 1 , wherein the plural separate logical partitions include at least a first logical partition that is configured as local storage and at least a second logical portion that is configured as network storage.

5. The data recorder unit of claim 1 , wherein the at least one storage device comprises a crash-hardened memory.

6. The data recorder unit of claim 1 , wherein the at least one data processing unit is configured to communicate video data to at least one remote device.

The data recorder unit of claim 1 , wherein the at least one data source comprises plural cameras each having a time source, and wherein the at least one data processing unit is further configured to store, in the at least one storage device, video data received from the cameras and the time source from each of the cameras.

8. A data recorder unit comprising:

a data recorder enclosure configured to house an internal component;

a data processing unit located in the data recorder enclosure and configured to receive data from a data source associated with a vehicle; and

a storage device located within the data recorder enclosure and in communication with the data processing unit, the storage device configured to store the data received by the data processing unit, the storage device comprising a network-attached storage device comprising plural separate logical partitions, wherein a portion of the data is stored within one logical partition and another portion of the data is stored within another logical partition,

wherein the storage device comprises one or more of a crash-hardened memory or a fire-resistant memory, wherein the storage device is configured to throttle a power dissipation of the storage device based at least partially upon a sensed temperature.

9. The data recorder unit of claim 8 , wherein the storage device is a local storage device located within one or more of a crash-proof or fire-proof enclosure positioned within the data recorder enclosure.

The data recorder unit of claim 8 , wherein the storage device is configured to throttle the power dissipation of the storage device by at least one of: discarding a non-critical portion of the data, temporarily buffering the data without recording the data to the storage device, storing the non-critical portion of the data on another storage device, or adjusting a flow of the data.

11. The data recorder unit of claim 8 , wherein the storage device is configured to throttle the power dissipation of the storage device to maintain the sensed temperature within a specified temperature range or below a specified maximum temperature.

12. The data recorder unit of claim 8 , wherein the data source comprises plural cameras each having a time source, and wherein the data processing unit is further configured to store, in the storage device, video data received from the cameras and the time source from each of the cameras.

13. The data recorder unit of claim 8 , wherein the plural logical partitions include a first logical partition that is configured as local storage and a second logical portion that is configured as network storage.
