Abstract

The present disclosure provides an apparatus for use in reducing the impact to the head during sporting activities. The present disclosure provides a helmet cap that covers an underlying hard shell helmet. The helmet cap has a durable, energy absorbing outer shell, which lessens the initial impact to the helmet. The outer shell is formed into segments of padded material that may deform on impact. The outer shell has an inner surface that allows the outer shell to slide over the surface of a helmet thereby reducing forces applied to a wearer. The helmet cap may be securely attached to helmets without modification of the helmets. The helmet cap may include an adjustable fastener that allows the helmet cap to be securely attached to helmets of varying dimensions.

Claims (28)

1. A system comprising:

a helmet; and

a helmet cap comprising an outer shell and an attachment point, wherein the helmet cap is connected, via the attachment point, to the helmet such that at least a portion of the outer shell is in contact with an outer surface of the helmet, wherein the outer shell comprises a plurality of padded segments, wherein first one or more padded segments of the plurality of padded segments are rotatable relative to the outer surface of the helmet upon impact to the first one or more padded segments with an object without causing rotation of second one or more padded segments of the plurality of padded segments relative to the outer surface of the helmet, and wherein the helmet cap and the helmet remain connected during a rotation of the first one or more padded segments relative to the outer surface of the helmet upon impact to the first one or more padded segments with an object.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the attachment point is configured with a strap and the helmet cap is connected to the helmet via the strap.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the strap is attached to a facemask of the helmet.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the helmet cap further comprises an adjustable fastener that adjusts one or more dimensions of the helmet cap when manipulated.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the outer shell is configured with one or more ventilation gaps interposed between two or more segments of the plurality of padded segments.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the outer shell is configured with one or more ear holes situated to correspond, at least in part, to one or more ear holes of the helmet, respectively.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the outer shell comprises an inner surface via which the at least a portion of the outer shell is in contact with the outer surface of the helmet, wherein the inner surface is decoupled from the outer surface of the helmet, wherein a first portion of the outer shell, comprising the first one or more padded segments, is rotatable relative to the outer surface of the helmet upon impact to the first portion of the outer shell with an object without causing rotation of a second portion of the outer shell, comprising the second one or more padded segments, relative to the outer surface of the helmet, and wherein the helmet cap and the helmet remain connected during a rotation of the first portion of the outer shell relative to the outer surface of the helmet upon impact to the first portion of the outer shell with an object.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the inner surface comprises a low friction surface configured to facilitate a rotational movement of the first portion of the outer shell relative to the outer surface of the helmet.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the attachment point comprises an elastic attachment point configured to facilitate a rotational movement of the first one or more padded segments relative to the outer surface of the helmet.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the outer shell is configured with an upper section and a lower section, the upper section comprising an upper two or more padded segments of the plurality of padded segments and the lower section comprising a lower two or more padded segments of the plurality of padded segments.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the helmet is at least one of a football helmet or a lacrosse helmet.

12. A system comprising:

a helmet; and

a helmet cap connected to the helmet and comprising an outer shell, wherein the outer shell comprises an inner surface such that at least a portion of the inner surface is in contact with an outer surface of the helmet, wherein the inner surface is decoupled from the outer surface of the helmet, wherein a first portion of the outer shell is rotatable relative to the outer surface of the helmet upon impact to the first portion of the outer shell with an object without causing rotation of a second portion of the outer shell relative to the outer surface of the helmet, and wherein the helmet cap and the helmet remain connected during a rotation of the first portion of the outer shell relative to the outer surface of the helmet upon impact to the first portion of the outer shell with an object.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the inner surface comprises a low friction surface configured to facilitate the rotation of the first portion of the outer shell relative to the outer surface of the helmet.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the helmet cap further comprises an attachment point via which the helmet cap is connected to the helmet.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the attachment point comprises an elastic attachment point configured to facilitate the rotation of the first portion of the outer shell relative to the outer surface of the helmet.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the elastic attachment point is configured with an elastic strap and the helmet cap is connected to the helmet via the elastic strap.

17. The system of claim 12 , wherein the outer shell is configured without any padded segments.

18. The system of claim 12 , wherein the outer shell is configured with one or more padded segments.

19. A system comprising:

a helmet; and

a helmet cap comprising:

an outer shell, and

one or more attachment points positioned at a periphery of the helmet cap, wherein at least a portion of an inner surface of the outer shell contacts an outer surface of the helmet, wherein the helmet cap is connected to the helmet via the one or more attachment points such that the outer shell is otherwise slidingly decoupled from the outer surface of the helmet and a first portion of the outer shell is rotatable relative to the outer surface of the helmet upon impact to the first portion of the outer shell with an object without causing rotation of a second portion of the outer shell relative to the outer surface of the helmet, and wherein the helmet cap and the helmet remain connected during a rotation of the first portion of the outer shell relative to the outer surface of the helmet upon impact to the first portion of the outer shell with an object.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the one or more attachment points comprise an elastic attachment point configured to facilitate the rotation of the first portion of the outer shell relative to the outer surface of the helmet.
