Abstract

A system and method for programmatically managing device connectivity to a network that includes provisioning connectivity devices with an account of a communication platform, where for a set of the connectivity devices, provisioning includes uniquely associating network operating identifiers of each of the connectivity devices with a corresponding programmatic device resource in the communication platform, setting communication metering properties in a programmatic connectivity plan resource in the communication platform and associating the connectivity plan resource to at least a subset of the device resources of the connectivity devices, and activating network communication status of the connectivity devices; servicing communications from the connectivity devices; and programmatically managing the communications from the connectivity devices through at least the device resources and the connectivity plan resources.

Claims (31)

1. A method comprising:

at a communications platform, registering a set of subscriber identity module (SIM) card connectivity devices with known identifiers and associating the set of SIM card connectivity devices to an account of the communications platform;

for each SIM card connectivity device of the set of SIM card connectivity devices, creating a programmatic resource and exposing a programmatic interface to the account;

receiving a request, which signals a request to activate a first SIM card connectivity device, via an application programming interface and authenticated by the account, the request specifying a programmatic resource of the first SIM card connectivity device and configuring a status callback universal resource identifier (URI); and

updating status of the first SIM card connectivity device in response to the request, which comprises initiating activation of the first SIM card connectivity device on a communications network and transmitting an asynchronous status update on activation of the first SIM card connectivity device to the status callback URI.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising configuring an updated connectivity plan resource in association with the account, and wherein the request specifies the updated connectivity plan resource; wherein updating status of the first SIM card connectivity device comprises associating the updated connectivity plan to the device resource; and further comprising metering the first SIM card connectivity device in accordance with the updated connectivity plan.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein configuring the updated connectivity plan comprises configuring communication capabilities of the first SIM card connectivity device.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein configuring communication capabilities comprises setting an enabled state of messaging and an enabled state of voice communications.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein configuring communication capabilities comprises setting an enabled state of national roaming and an enabled state international roaming.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein configuring the updated connectivity plan comprises configuring communication limits.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein configuring communication limits comprises setting maximum number of message communications and maximum duration of voice communication.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of SIM card connectivity devices are managed by a mobile core, and wherein updating status comprises communicating updated status of the first SIM card connectivity device with the mobile core.

9. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising computer-readable instructions that, when executed by one or more processors of a machine, cause the machine to perform operations comprising:

registering a set of subscriber identity module (SIM) card connectivity devices with known identifiers and associating the set of SIM card connectivity devices to an account of a communications platform;

for each SIM card connectivity device of the set of SIM card connectivity devices, creating a programmatic resource and exposing a programmatic interface to the account;

receiving a request, which signals a request to activate a first connectivity device, via an application programming interface and authenticated by the account, the request specifying a programmatic resource of the first SIM card connectivity device and configuring a status callback universal resource identifier (URI); and

updating status of the first SIM card connectivity device in response to the request, which comprises initiating activation of the first SIM card connectivity device on a communications network and transmitting an asynchronous status update on activation of the first SIM card connectivity device to the status callback URI.

The computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , further comprising configuring an updated connectivity plan resource in association with the account, and wherein the request specifies the updated connectivity plan resource; wherein updating status of the first SIM card connectivity device comprises associating the updated connectivity plan to the device resource; and further comprising metering the first SIM card connectivity device in accordance with the updated connectivity plan.

11. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein configuring the updated connectivity plan comprises configuring communication capabilities of the first SIM card connectivity device.

12. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein configuring the updated connectivity plan comprises configuring communication limits.

13. A system comprising:

a communications platform;

a set of subscriber identity module (SIM) card connectivity devices registered with known identifiers with the communications platform, wherein the set of SIM card connectivity devices are associated with an account of the communications platform;

a programmatic resource for each SIM card connectivity device of the set of SIM card connectivity devices;

a programmatic interface exposed to the account;

wherein the communication platform comprises at least one computer-readable medium storing instructions that when executed by at least one computer processor cause the communication platform to perform operations comprising:

receiving a request, which signals a request to activate a first SIM card connectivity device, via an application programming interface and authenticated by the account, the request specifying a programmatic resource of the first SIM card connectivity device and configuring a status callback universal resource identifier (URI), and

updating status of the first SIM card connectivity device in response to the request, which comprises initiating activation of the first SIM card connectivity device on a communications network and transmitting an asynchronous status update on activation of the first SIM card connectivity device to the status callback URI.

The system of claim 13 , wherein the at least one computer-readable medium further stores instructions that when executed by at least one computer processor cause the communication platform to perform operations comprising configuring an updated connectivity plan resource in association with the account, wherein the request specifies the updated connectivity plan resource, where updating status of the first SIM card connectivity device comprises associating the updated connectivity plan to the device resource, and metering the first SIM card connectivity device in accordance with the updated connectivity plan.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein configuring the updated connectivity plan comprises configuring communication capabilities of the first SIM card connectivity device.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein configuring the updated connectivity plan comprises configuring communication limits.
