Abstract

Methods and apparatus relating to an adaptive multibit bus for energy optimization are described. In an embodiment, a 1-bit interconnect of a processor is caused to select between a plurality of operational modes. The plurality of operational modes comprises a first mode and a second mode. The first mode causes transmission of a single bit over the 1-bit interconnect at a first frequency and the second mode causes transmission of a plurality of bits over the 1-bit interconnect at a second frequency based at least in part on a determination that an operating voltage of the 1-bit interconnect is at a high voltage level and that the second frequency is lower than the first frequency. Other embodiments are also disclosed and claimed.

Claims (26)

1. An apparatus comprising:

logic, at least a portion of which is in hardware, to cause a 1-bit interconnect of a processor to select between a plurality of operational modes, wherein the 1-bit interconnect comprises a transmission line, wherein the plurality of operational modes comprise a first mode and a second mode,

wherein the first mode is to cause transmission of a single bit over the transmission line at a first frequency and a first operating voltage level, wherein the second mode is to cause transmission of two bits over the transmission line at a second frequency and a second operating voltage level, wherein the second frequency is lower than the first frequency and second operating voltage level is higher than the first operating voltage level.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the logic is to cause the 1-bit interconnect to dynamically switch between the first mode and the second mode based at least on a comparison of the first operating voltage level of the 1-bit interconnect with one or more threshold voltage values.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein, in the second mode, the second frequency is to be one half of the first frequency.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , comprising logic to determine whether the operating voltage of the 1-bit interconnect is at the high voltage level based at least in part on comparison of the operating voltage with a threshold voltage value.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the logic is to cause the 1-bit interconnect to operate in the first mode based at least in part on a determination that the operating voltage of the 1-bit interconnect is at a low voltage level.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , comprising logic to determine whether the operating voltage of the 1-bit interconnect is at the low voltage level based at least in part on comparison of the operating voltage with a threshold voltage value.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor comprises a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) having one or more graphics processing cores.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor comprises one or more processor cores.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein one or more of: the processor, the logic, and memory are on a single integrated circuit die or on a single semiconductor package.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the 1-bit interconnect comprises an on-die interconnect.

11. A method comprising:

causing a 1-bit interconnect of a processor to select between a plurality of operational modes, wherein the 1-bit interconnect comprises a transmission line, wherein the plurality of operational modes comprises a first mode and a second mode, wherein the first mode causes transmission of a single bit over the 1-bit interconnect at a first frequency,

wherein the first mode is to cause transmission of a single bit over the transmission line at a first frequency and a first operating voltage level, wherein the second mode is to cause transmission of two bits over the transmission line at a second frequency and a second operating voltage level, wherein the second frequency is lower than the first frequency and second operating voltage level is higher than the first operating voltage level.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising causing the 1-bit interconnect to dynamically switch between the first mode and the second mode based at least on a comparison of the first operating voltage level of the 1-bit interconnect with one or more threshold voltage values.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein, in the second mode, the second frequency is one half of the first frequency.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising determining whether the operating voltage of the 1-bit interconnect is at the high voltage level based at least in part on comparison of the operating voltage with a threshold voltage value.

15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising causing the 1-bit interconnect to operate in the first mode based at least in part on a determination that the operating voltage of the 1-bit interconnect is at a low voltage level.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising determining whether the operating voltage of the 1-bit interconnect is at the low voltage level based at least in part on comparison of the operating voltage with a threshold voltage value.

17. One or more non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising one or more instructions that when executed on at least one processor configure the at least one processor to perform one or more operations to:

cause a 1-bit interconnect of the processor to select between a plurality of operational modes, wherein the 1-bit interconnect comprises a transmission line, wherein the plurality of operational modes comprises a first mode and a second mode,

wherein the first mode is to cause transmission of a single bit over the transmission line at a first frequency and a first operating voltage level, wherein the second mode is to cause transmission of two bits over the transmission line at a second frequency and a second operating voltage level, wherein the second frequency is lower than the first frequency and second operating voltage level is higher than the first operating voltage level.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , further comprising one or more instructions that when executed on the at least one processor configure the at least one processor to perform one or more operations to cause the 1-bit interconnect to dynamically switch between the first mode and the second mode based at least on a comparison of the first operating voltage level of the 1-bit interconnect with one or more threshold voltage values.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , further comprising one or more instructions that when executed on the at least one processor configure the at least one processor to perform one or more operations to cause determination of whether the operating voltage of the 1-bit interconnect is at the high voltage level based at least in part on comparison of the operating voltage with a threshold voltage value.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , further comprising one or more instructions that when executed on the at least one processor configure the at least one processor to perform one or more operations to cause the 1-bit interconnect to operate in the first mode based at least in part on a determination that the operating voltage of the 1-bit interconnect is at a low voltage level.
