Abstract

Provided are methods and systems for using synthetic resource records to configure and manage web applications and various online services. A user is provided with the ability to setup a single synthetic resource record for their domain such that all of the associated dependent resource records are automatically configured and added to the domain as well. The methods and systems provided utilize synthetic resource records as a way of logically grouping resource records into “human readable” sets of resource records. Through synthetic resource records, users are able to address common configuration issues without having to know the technical specifications of associated zone files or resource records. Additionally, users can complete a variety of configuration tasks related to setting-up web applications without having to look-up resource record values from external sites (e.g., from the domain host).

Claims (40)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

providing an interface for editing a synthetic resource record for a web application associated with an Internet domain, wherein the synthetic resource record corresponds to a logical group of resources records and includes domain name system (DNS) information for the Internet domain or a subdomain;

receiving, through the interface, information indicating a change to a configuration of the web application for the Internet domain;

sending a service specification defined for the web application to at least one of a configuration server or at least one web application associated with the synthetic resource record;

updating, with one or more processors, the logical group of resource records based on the received information; and

sending the updates to a DNS server.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein sending the updates to the DNS server comprises sending an updated DNS specification.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

using a service specification to configure one or more specific actions on the Internet domain, on the subdomain, or both.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, from a service owner associated with the web application, information indicating a change to the web application; and

updating the synthetic resource record for the web application based on the information received from the service owner and an intent of a user as indicated in a service specification.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information indicating a change to the configuration of the web application includes the subdomain of the Internet domain and an identifier for the web application.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the synthetic resource record further includes a service specification defined for the web application, the service specification including information indicating a cloud-based service configuration associated with the Internet domain.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein updating the logical group of resource records is further based on an intent of a user as indicated in the service specification.

8. A system comprising:

one or more memories; and

one or more processors in communication with the one or more memories and configured to:

provide an interface for editing a synthetic resource record for a web application associated with an Internet domain, wherein the synthetic resource record corresponds to a logical group of resources records and includes domain name system (DNS) information for the Internet domain or a subdomain;

receive, through the interface, information indicating a change to a configuration of the web application for the Internet domain;

send a service specification defined for the web application to at least one of a configuration server or at least one web application associated with the synthetic resource record;

update the logical group of resource records based on the received information; and

send the updates to a DNS server.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein sending the updates to the DNS server comprises sending an updated DNS specification.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more processors are caused to perform further operations comprising:

using a service specification to configure one or more specific actions on the domain, on the subdomain, or both.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more processors are caused to perform further operations comprising:

receiving, from a service owner associated with the web application, information indicating a change to the web application; and

updating the synthetic resource record for the web application based on the information received from the service owner and an intent of a user as indicated in a service specification.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the information indicating a change to the configuration of the web application includes the subdomain and an identifier for the web application.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the synthetic resource record further includes a service specification defined for the web application, the service specification including information indicating a cloud-based service configuration associated with the Internet domain.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein updating the logical group of resource records is further based on an intent of a user as indicated in the service specification.

15. One or more non-transitory computer readable media storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

providing an interface for editing a synthetic resource record for a web application associated with an Internet domain, wherein the synthetic resource record corresponds to a logical group of resources records and includes domain name system (DNS) information for the Internet domain or a subdomain;

receiving, through the interface, information indicating a change to a configuration of the web application for the Internet domain;

sending a service specification defined for the web application to at least one of a configuration server or at least one web application associated with the synthetic resource record;

updating the logical group of resource records based on the received information; and

sending the updates to a DNS server.

16. The one or more non-transitory computer readable media of claim 15 , wherein the information indicating a desired change to the configuration of the web application includes the subdomain of the Internet domain and an identifier for the web application.

The one or more non-transitory computer readable media of claim 15 , wherein the synthetic resource record further includes a service specification defined for the web application, the service specification including information indicating a cloud-based service configuration associated with the Internet domain, and updating the logical group of resource records is further based on an intent of a user as indicated in the service specification.
