Abstract

A ball striking device includes a ball striking plate having a front surface configured to strike a ball and a rear surface opposite the front surface. The ball striking plate has a desired-contact region and a perimeter. One or more spoke-like reinforcement ribs may be located on the rear surface and may radiate away from the desired-contact region toward the perimeter. At least one of the spoke-like reinforcement ribs may be located in an upper-toe quadrant or in an upper-heel quadrant of the rear surface. One or more encircling reinforcement ribs may be located on the rear surface. The one or more encircling reinforcement ribs may be at least partially encircling the desired-contact region. A thickened portion of the ball striking plate may be positioned behind the desired-contact region of the ball striking plate. The ball striking device may be a golf club head.

Claims (33)

1. A ball striking device comprising:

a ball striking plate having a front surface configured to strike a ball and a rear surface opposite the front surface, the ball striking plate having a desired-contact region and a perimeter; and

further comprising a thickened portion of the ball striking plate, the thickened portion including an elevated area on the rear surface of the ball striking plate positioned behind the desired-contact region of the ball striking plate;

wherein the thickened portion comprises a transition area that tapers in thickness between an upper boundary that defines a perimeter of an elevated area and a lower boundary that defines a perimeter of the thickened portion;

a first plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs located on a rear surface and extending away from the desired-contact region toward the perimeter; and

a second plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs located on the rear surface and extending away from the desired-contact region toward the perimeter,

wherein the second plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs extend outward from the elevated area and over the transition area;

wherein the second plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs comprise a cross-sectional area that increases as the thickness of the transition area decreases;

wherein the thickened portion is elongated along an axis of elongation, and

wherein the axis of elongation is coincident with a maximum planar dimension of the thickened portion.

2. The ball striking device of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs ends before reaching the perimeter of the ball striking plate.

3. The ball striking device of claim 2 , wherein the second plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs extend to the perimeter of the ball striking plate.

4. The ball striking device of claim 1 , wherein one of the first plurality or second plurality of spoke-like reinforcement include a plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs that are evenly spaced from one another.

5. The ball striking device of claim 1 , wherein the thickened portion comprises a kidney shape.

6. The ball striking device of claim 1 , further including one or more encircling reinforcement ribs located on the rear surface, the one or more encircling reinforcement ribs at least partially encircling the desired-contact region.

7. The ball striking device of claim 1 , wherein the axis of elongation is angled between 5°-18° from a horizontal axis extending through an areal centroid of the thickened portion.

8. The ball striking device of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs extend outward from the lower boundary that defines the thickened portion and end before reaching the perimeter of the ball striking plate.

9. The ball striking device of claim 1 , wherein the second plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs extend to the perimeter of the ball striking plate.

10. A ball striking device comprising:

a ball striking plate having a front surface configured to strike a ball and a rear surface opposite the front surface, the ball striking plate having a desired-contact region and a perimeter; and

further comprising a thickened portion of the ball striking plate, the thickened portion including an elevated area on the rear surface of the ball striking plate positioned behind the desired-contact region of the ball striking plate;

a first plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs located on the rear surface and extending away from the desired-contact region toward the perimeter; and

a second plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs located on the rear surface and extending away from the desired-contact region toward the perimeter,

wherein the ball striking plate further comprises a first quadrant located in a high-toe area, a second quadrant located in a high-heel area, a third quadrant located in a low-heel area, and a fourth quadrant located in a low-toe area;

wherein the first plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs and the second plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs are located in separate quadrants; and

wherein the first plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs and the second plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs are spaced are angularly and in 5 degree increments.

11. The ball striking device of claim 10 , wherein a maximum width of one or more spoke-like reinforcement ribs of the first plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs and the second plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs ranges from approximately 0.10 mm to approximately 3.0 mm.

12. The ball striking device of claim 10 , wherein the thickened portion is elongated along an axis of elongation, and wherein the axis of elongation is coincident with a maximum planar dimension of the thickened portion.

13. The ball striking device of claim 10 , wherein the axis of elongation is angled between 5°-18° from a horizontal axis extending through an areal centroid of the thickened portion.

14. The ball striking device of claim 10 , further comprising one or more encircling reinforcement ribs; wherein the one or more encircling reinforcement ribs are a plurality of encircling reinforcement ribs, and wherein a spacing of the plurality of encircling reinforcement ribs from one another increases as a distance from the desired-contact region increases.

15. The ball striking device of claim 10 , wherein the first plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs are provided in the first quadrant and the second plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs are provided in the second quadrant.

16. The ball striking device of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs of the first plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs and the second plurality of spoke-like reinforcement ribs are parallel and extend from the thickened portion to the perimeter of the ball striking plate.

17. The ball striking device of claim 10 , wherein the thickened portion comprises a first lobe, a second lobe, and a connecting portion extending between the first lobe and the second lobe.
