Abstract

A method and system for serving assets is disclosed, comprising receiving an asset request to serve an asset, wherein the asset request originates at an application, and wherein the asset request comprises an advertisement of an asset to be served and a request for the network address of an asset server configured to serve the requested asset. The method further comprises causing a service discovery server to identify an asset server configured to serve the requested asset, and causing the requested asset to be served to the application.

Claims (26)

1. A method comprising:

executing an authentication procedure to determine whether an application is authorized to receive a data asset and to issue a token if the application is positively authenticated, wherein the token indicates that the application is authorized to receive the data asset and indicates a permission level of the application or a permission level of a user of the application;

receiving, at a service discovery server comprising one or more hardware computer processors, an asset request message from an application when the application requires the data asset, wherein the asset request message comprises an advertisement of the data asset, a version constraint specifying one or more versions of the data asset, a request for a network address of an asset server configured to serve the data asset, and the token;

causing the service discovery server to automatically identify, based at least on the version constraint and one or more of the permission level of the application or the permission level of the user of the application, from a plurality of asset servers, an asset server configured to serve the data asset; and

causing the service discovery server to send an asset service instruction message and the token to the identified asset server causing the asset server to serve the data asset, in accordance with the permission level indicated in the token, to the application requiring the data asset.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

retrieving, by the asset server configured to serve the data asset, the data asset from an asset repository; and

serving, by the asset server configured to serve the data asset, the data asset to the application in response to the asset service instruction message.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying, by the asset server, one or more versions of the data asset at the identified asset server;

selecting, by the asset server, a most recent version of the data asset; and

serving the most recent version of the data asset to the application in response to the asset service instruction message.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein identifying the one or more versions of the data asset comprises accessing an index file containing a list of versions of respective data assets stored at the identified asset server.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data asset is a static asset.

6. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing computer readable code that, when executed by a computing apparatus, causes the computing apparatus to:

execute an authentication procedure to determine whether an application is authorized to receive a data asset and to issue a token if the application is positively authenticated, wherein the token indicates that the application is authorized to receive the data asset and indicates a permission level of the application or a permission level of a user of the application;

receive at a service discovery server comprising one or more hardware computer processors, an asset request message from an application when the application requires the data asset, wherein the asset request message comprises an advertisement of the data asset, a request for a network address of an asset server configured to serve the data asset, and the token;

cause the service discovery server to automatically identify, based at least on one or more of the permission level of the application or the permission level of the user of the application, from a plurality of asset servers, an asset server configured to serve the data asset; and

cause the service discovery server to send an asset service instruction message and the token to the identified asset server causing the asset server to serve the data asset, in accordance with the permission level indicated in the token, to the application requiring the data asset.

7. An apparatus comprising:

a non-transitory computer readable medium storing computer readable code;

one or more processors or special-purpose computing hardware configured to execute the computer readable code to cause the apparatus to:

execute an authentication procedure to determine whether an application is authorized to receive a data asset and to issue a token if the application is positively authenticated, wherein the token indicates that the application is authorized to receive the data asset and indicates a permission level of the application or a permission level of a user of the application;

receive at a service discovery server comprising one or more hardware computer processors, an asset request message from an application when the application requires the data asset, wherein the asset request message comprises an advertisement of the data asset, a request for a network address of an asset server configured to serve the data asset, and the token;

cause the service discovery server to automatically identify, based at least on one or more of the permission level of the application or the permission level of the user of the application, from a plurality of asset servers, an asset server configured to serve the required data asset; and

cause the service discovery server to send an asset service instruction message and the token to the identified asset server causing the asset server to serve the data asset, in accordance with the permission level indicated in the token, to the application requiring the data asset.
