Abstract

Embodiments herein achieve a method for handling registration and session management in a wireless communication system. The method includes registering, by a User Equipment (UE), with a first core network entity over a 3GPP access network and a non-3GPP access network. Further, the method includes triggering, by the UE, a registration procedure to a second core network over the 3GPP access network when a periodic timer of the UE expires in an OOS state. Further, the method includes receiving, by the UE, a non-access stratum (NAS) message, over the 3GPP access network, with an indication to register for the non-3GPP access network with the second core network entity. Further, the method includes reinitiating the registration procedure to register again for the non-3GPP access with the second core network entity through the non-3GPP access network.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the registration request message comprises at least one of a native 5G-Globally Unique Temporary Identifier (5G-GUTI) or a 5G-GUTI mapped from an Evolved Packet System (EPS) GUTI.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the native 5G-GUTI is used by the second AMF entity to retrieve the non-3GPP access context from the first AMF entity and the 5G-GUTI mapped from the EPS GUTI is used to transfer a 3GPP access context from the MME.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

performing a registration procedure with a second AMF entity for the non-3GPP access network based on the Registration accept message received over the 3GPP access network and if the UE is already in a 5GMM-REGISTERED state over the non-3GPP access network.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the information indicating a result of a registration procedure with the second AMF for the non-3GPP access network included in a 5G registration result information in the registration accept message.

6. A method, performed by a second access management function (AMF) entity, in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:

receiving, from a user equipment (UE), a registration request message comprising indication indicating the second AMF entity to obtain a non-3 rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) access context from a first AMF entity;

obtaining the non-3GPP access context and a 3GPP access context from, respectively, the first AMF entity and a mobility management entity (MME) connected with the UE; and

transmitting, to the UE, a registration accept message including information indicating a result of a registration procedure with the second AMF for a non-3GPP access network and/or a 3GPP access network.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the non-3GPP access context is obtained from the first AMF entity based on a native 5G globally unique temporary identifier (5G-GUTI) included in the Registration request message and the 3GPP access context is obtained from the first AMF entity or the MME based on a 5G-GUTI mapped from a Evolved Packet System (EPS) GUTI included in the registration request message.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

perform a registration procedure for the non-3GPP access network with the UE based on the Registration accept message received over the 3GPP access network and if the UE is already in a 5GMM-REGISTERED state over non-3GPP access.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the information indicating a result of a registration procedure with the second AMF for the non-3GPP access network included in a 5GS registration result information.

10. The method of claim 6 , further comprising, the first AMF, the second AMF and the MME belongs to a same public land mobile network (PLMN).

11. A user equipment (UE) in a wireless communication system, the UE comprising:

a transceiver; and

at least one controller coupled with the transceiver and configured to:

connect with a mobility management entity (MME) in order to communicate over a 3 rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) access network and a first access management function (AMF) entity in order to communicate over a non-3GPP access network, and

trigger a registration procedure with a second AMF entity over the 3GPP access network,

wherein the controller is further configured to:

transmit, to the second AMF entity, a registration request message comprising indication indicating the second AMF entity to obtain a non-3GPP access context from the first AMF entity, and

receive, from the second AMF entity over the 3GPP access network, a registration accept message including information indicating a result of a registration procedure with the second AMF for the non-3GPP access network and/or the 3GPP access network.

12. The UE of claim 11 , wherein the registration request message comprises at least one of a native 5G-Globally Unique Temporary Identifier (5G-GUTI) or a 5G-GUTI mapped from an Evolved Packet System (EPS) GUTI.

13. The UE of claim 12 , the native 5G-GUTI is used by the second AMF entity to retrieve the non-3GPP access context from the first AMF entity and the 5G-GUTI mapped from the EPS GUTI is used to transfer a 3GPP access context from the MME.

14. The UE of claim 11 , wherein the at least one controller is configured to:

perform a registration procedure with the second AMF based on the Registration accept message received over the 3GPP access network and if the UE is already in a 5GMM-REGISTERED state over the non-3GPP access network.

15. The UE of claim 14 , wherein the information indicating a result of a registration procedure with the second AMF for the non-3GPP access network included in a 5GS registration result information in the registration accept message.
