Abstract

A lift device includes a base assembly, a turntable assembly, and a controller. The base assembly includes multiple base assembly batteries. The turntable assembly is rotatably coupled with the base assembly through a slip ring transmission. The turntable assembly includes multiple turntable assembly batteries. The controller is configured to operate the base assembly batteries to discharge electrical energy to the turntable batteries through the slip ring transmission. The slip ring transmission is configured to both (1) drive the turntable assembly to rotate relative to the base assembly and (2) to electrically and communicably couple electrical components of the base assembly with electrical components of the turntable assembly.

Claims (30)

1. A lift device comprising:

a base assembly comprising a chassis, a plurality of tractive elements rotatably coupled to the chassis and a plurality of base assembly batteries, wherein the base assembly batteries are configured to store and provide electrical energy for electrical components of the base assembly;

a turntable assembly rotatably coupled with the base assembly through a slip ring transmission, the turntable assembly comprising a plurality of turntable batteries;

a lift apparatus coupled with the slip ring transmission and configured to raise or lower an implement assembly, wherein one or more electrical components of the lift apparatus are configured to consume electrical energy provided by the turntable batteries to raise or lower the implement assembly; and

a controller configured to:

operate the base assembly batteries to charge the turntable batteries through the slip ring transmissions;

wherein the lift device is a fully electric lift device.

2. The lift device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to:

obtain a battery level of the base assembly batteries from a first battery sensor;

obtain a battery level of the turntable batteries from a second battery sensor; and

restrict or limit one or more operations of the base assembly or the lift device based on the battery level of the base assembly batteries and the battery level of the turntable batteries.

3. The lift device of claim 1 , wherein the slip ring transmission is electrically coupled with a charger for the plurality of turntable batteries and is configured to provide AC electrical energy to the charger for charging the plurality of turntable batteries.

4. The lift device of claim 3 , wherein the charger is electrically coupled with one or more linear electric actuators of the lift apparatus for raising or lowering the lift apparatus.

5. The lift device of claim 1 , wherein the slip ring transmission is electrically coupled with a sky load at the implement assembly and is configured to provide AC electrical energy to the sky load.

6. The lift device of claim 1 , further comprising a power inverter, wherein the power inverter is configured to receive DC power from the base assembly batteries, convert the DC power to AC power, and provide the AC power to the electrical slip ring transmission.

7. The lift device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to limit discharge of the base assembly batteries and the turntable batteries in response to the lift device being inoperational for a period of time.

8. The lift device of claim 1 , wherein the slip ring transmission is configured to drive the turntable assembly relative to the base assembly using electrical energy from the base assembly batteries to provide continuous relative rotation of the turntable assembly relative to the base assembly.

9. A battery system for a lift device comprising:

a plurality of base assembly batteries coupled with a base of the lift device;

a plurality of turntable batteries coupled with a turntable of the lift device;

a slip ring transmission configured to rotatably coupled the turntable with the base, the slip ring transmission electrically coupled with both the base assembly batteries and the turntable batteries; and

a controller configured to:

monitor a battery level of the turntable batteries; and

in response to the battery level decreasing below a threshold, operate the base assembly batteries to discharge electrical energy through the slip ring transmission to charge the turntable batteries;

wherein the plurality of base assembly batteries have a higher capacity than the plurality of turntable batteries.

10. The battery system of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of base assembly batteries are configured to provide electrical energy to electrical components of the base of the lift device, and the plurality of turntable batteries are configured to provide electrical energy to electrical components of the turntable of the lift device.

11. The battery system of claim 9 , wherein the slip ring transmission is electrically coupled with a charger for the plurality of turntable batteries and is configured to provide AC electrical energy to the charger for charging the plurality of turntable batteries.

12. The battery system of claim 11 , wherein the charger is electrically coupled with one or more linear electric actuators of a lift apparatus of the lift device for raising or lowering the lift apparatus.

13. The battery system of claim 9 , further comprising a power inverter, wherein the power inverter is configured to receive DC power from the base assembly batteries, convert the DC power to AC power, and provide the AC power to the electrical slip ring transmission.

14. The battery system of claim 9 , wherein the controller is configured to limit discharge of the base assembly batteries and the turntable batteries in response to the lift device being inoperational for a period of time.
