Abstract

A novel maize variety designated X18R894 and seed, plants and plant parts thereof are produced by crossing inbred maize varieties. Methods for producing a maize plant by crossing hybrid maize variety X18R894 with another maize plant are disclosed. Methods for producing a maize plant containing in its genetic material one or more traits introgressed into X18R894 through backcrossing or genetic transformation, and to the maize seed, plant and plant part produced thereby are described. Maize variety X18R894, the seed, the plant produced from the seed, and variants, mutants, and minor modifications of maize variety X18R894 are provided. Methods for producing maize varieties derived from maize variety X18R894 and methods of using maize variety X18R894 are disclosed.

Claims (20)

1. A seed of hybrid maize variety X18R894, representative seed produced by crossing a first plant of variety PH8JV with a second plant of variety PH40W6, wherein representative seed of the varieties PH8JV and PH40W6 have been deposited under ATCC Accession Numbers PTA-7761 and PTA-126698, respectively.

2. A plant or plant part of hybrid maize variety X18R894 grown from the seed of claim 1 , wherein the plant part comprises at least one cell of hybrid maize variety X18R894.

3. A method of producing the seed of claim 1 , the method comprising crossing a plant of variety PH8JV with a plant of variety PH40W6.

4. A seed of hybrid maize variety X18R894 further comprising a transgene, wherein the transgene is introduced by backcrossing or genetic transformation into the variety PH8JV, the variety PH40W6, or both varieties PH8JV and PH40W6, wherein a plant grown from the seed comprises the transgene and otherwise comprises all the physiological and morphological characteristics of maize variety X18R894 when grown under the same environmental conditions, and wherein representative seed of the varieties PH8JV and PH40W6 have been deposited under ATCC Accession Numbers PTA-7761 and PTA-126698, respectively.

5. A seed of hybrid maize variety X18R894 further comprising a single locus conversion, wherein a plant grown from the seed comprises a trait conferred by the single locus conversion, and wherein the seed is produced by crossing a first plant of variety PH8JV with a second plant of variety PH40W6, wherein the first plant, the second plant or both further comprise the single locus conversion, and wherein representative seed of the varieties PH8JV and PH40W6 have been deposited under ATCC Accession Numbers PTA-7761 and PTA-126698, respectively.

6. The hybrid maize variety X18R894 seed further comprising a single locus conversion of claim 5 , wherein the single locus conversion confers a property selected from the group consisting of male sterility, herbicide tolerance, insect resistance, disease resistance, waxy starch, modified fatty acid metabolism, modified phytic acid metabolism, modified carbohydrate metabolism and modified protein metabolism.

7. The hybrid maize variety X18R894 seed further comprising a single locus conversion of claim 5 , further comprising a seed treatment on the surface of the seed.

8. A method for producing nucleic acids, the method comprising isolating nucleic acids from the hybrid maize variety X18R894 seed further comprising a single locus conversion of claim 5 .

9. A plant or plant part grown from the hybrid maize variety X18R894 seed further comprising a single locus conversion of claim 5 , the plant part comprising at least one cell of hybrid maize variety X18R894 further comprising the single locus conversion.

10. A method of producing a commodity plant product comprising starch, syrup, silage, fat or protein, the method comprising producing the commodity plant product from the plant or plant part of claim 9 .

11. A method for producing a second maize plant, the method comprising applying plant breeding techniques to the plant or plant part of claim 9 to produce the second maize plant.

12. A method for producing the seed of claim 5 , the method comprising crossing a first plant of variety PH8JV with a second plant of variety PH40W6, representative seed of the varieties PH8JV and PH40W6 having been deposited under ATCC Accession Numbers PTA-7761 and PTA-126698, respectively, wherein at least one of the varieties PH8JV and PH40W6 further comprises the locus conversion.

13. The seed of claim 4 , further comprising a seed treatment on the surface of the seed.

14. The seed of claim 4 , wherein the transgene confers a property selected from the group consisting of male sterility, herbicide tolerance, insect resistance, disease resistance, waxy starch, modified fatty acid metabolism, modified phytic acid metabolism, modified carbohydrate metabolism and modified protein metabolism.

15. A method for producing nucleic acids, the method comprising isolating nucleic acids from the seed of claim 4 .

16. A plant or plant part produced by growing the seed of claim 4 , the plant part comprising at least one F1 hybrid maize variety X18R894 cell further comprising the transgene.

17. A method for producing nucleic acids, the method comprising isolating nucleic acids from the plant or plant part of claim 16 .

18. A method of producing a commodity plant product comprising starch, syrup, silage, fat or protein, the method comprising producing the commodity plant product from the plant or plant part of claim 16 .

19. A method for producing a second maize plant, the method comprising crossing the maize plant or plant part of claim 16 with itself or with a different maize plant.

20. A method for producing nucleic acids, the method comprising isolating nucleic acids from the plant or plant part of claim 9 .
