Abstract

A system and method for rapid halt and recovery of motion deviations in a medical device includes a computer-assisted medical device having a first repositionable arm having one or more first repositionable elements, a second repositionable arm having one or more second repositionable elements, and a control unit communicably coupled to the first and second repositionable arms. The control unit is configured to control motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector based on a desired motion, monitor an actual motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector, determine whether the actual motion deviates from the desired motion by more than a predetermined threshold, and halt motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector, or of the second repositionable arm and the second end effector, when the actual motion deviates from the desired motion by more than the predetermined threshold.

Claims (65)

1. A computer-assisted medical device comprising:

a first repositionable arm having one or more first repositionable elements for positioning the first repositionable arm and a first end effector when the first end effector is mounted to the first repositionable arm;

a second repositionable arm having one or more second repositionable elements for positioning the second repositionable arm and a second end effector when the second end effector is mounted to the second repositionable arm; and

a control unit communicably coupled to the first repositionable arm and the second repositionable arm, wherein the control unit is programmed to:

receive a command indicating a desired motion that is to be performed by the first repositionable arm and the first end effector;

monitor, based on sensor data acquired by one or more sensors, an actual motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector;

determine whether the actual motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector deviates from the desired motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector by more than a predetermined threshold; and

halt motion of the second repositionable arm and the second end effector and move the first repositionable arm and the first end effector in response to the actual motion deviating from the desired motion by more than the predetermined threshold.

2. The computer-assisted medical device of claim 1 , wherein the command is based on movement of one or more input controls.

3. The computer-assisted medical device of claim 1 , wherein the control unit is configured to halt motion of the second repositionable arm and the second end effector by:

halting movement of the second repositionable arm and the second end effector in accordance with a mode in which the second repositionable arm and the second end effector are being operated.

4. The computer-assisted medical device of claim 1 , wherein to monitor the actual motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector, the control unit determines a position of a point of interest associated with the first end effector.

The computer-assisted medical device of claim 1 , wherein to determine whether the actual motion deviates from the desired motion by more than the predetermined threshold, the control unit determines a composite deviation for a plurality of kinematic or dynamic values associated with the first repositionable arm or the first end effector, and wherein to determine the composite deviation, the control unit:

determines, for each kinematic or dynamic value in the plurality of kinematic or dynamic values, a difference between an actual value and a corresponding desired value to generate a combined set of variation values; and

determines, from the combined set of variation values, the composite deviation.

The computer-assisted medical device of claim 1 , wherein to determine whether the actual motion deviates from the desired motion by more than the predetermined threshold, the control unit determines whether any kinematic or dynamic value associated with the one or more first repositionable elements is above a respective threshold.

The computer-assisted medical device of claim 1 , wherein to determine whether the actual motion deviates from the desired motion by more than the predetermined threshold, the control unit determines a weighted combination of differences between a plurality of values, the plurality of values selected from the group consisting of:

a plurality of kinematics values associated with the first end effector and a plurality of dynamic values associated with the first end effector.

8. The computer-assisted medical device of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined threshold is based on a mode of operation, or on a type of motion for the first repositionable arm and the first end effector.

9. The computer-assisted medical device of claim 1 , wherein the control unit is configured to halt motion of the second repositionable arm and the second end effector by:

halting movement of the second repositionable arm and the second end effector by halting motion of the one or more second repositionable elements; or

locking a commanded position of an actuated repositionable element of the one or more second repositionable elements to a current commanded position of the actuated repositionable element, and setting a commanded velocity of the actuated repositionable element to zero.

10. The computer-assisted medical device of claim 9 , wherein to set the commanded velocity of the actuated repositionable element to zero, the control unit is configured to:

set the commanded velocity to zero using a ramp or a sequence of steps; or

brake an actuated repositionable element of the one or more second repositionable elements, and setting a feedback torque for the actuated repositionable element to zero.

11. The computer-assisted medical device of claim 1 , wherein the desired motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector is no motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector.

12. The computer-assisted medical device of claim 1 , wherein the control unit is configured to halt motion of the second repositionable arm and the second end effector by:

braking a brakeable repositionable element of the one or more second repositionable elements.

The computer-assisted medical device of claim 1 , wherein the control unit is further configured to clear a condition that caused the actual motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector to deviate from the desired motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector by more than the predetermined threshold.

14. The computer-assisted medical device of claim 13 , wherein the control unit is further programmed to:

halt motion of the second repositionable arm and the second end effector by halting movement of the second repositionable arm and the second end effector, and

set a commanded position of a first commanded element of the one or more second repositionable elements to a current position of the first commanded element in order to clear the condition.

15. The computer-assisted medical device of claim 1 , wherein the control unit is further programmed to:

provide an audio or visual alert indicating that the motion has been halted; or

provide an audio or visual instruction on how to clear a condition causing halting of the motion.

16. A method of operating a computer-assisted medical device having a control unit, the method comprising:

controlling, by the control unit of the computer-assisted medical device, motion of a first repositionable arm and a first end effector, wherein:

the first repositionable arm includes one or more first repositionable elements for positioning the first repositionable arm, and

the first end effector is mounted to the first repositionable arm;

receiving a command indicating a desired motion that is to be performed by the first repositionable arm and the first end effector;

monitoring, by the control unit and based on sensor data acquired by one or more sensors, an actual motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector;

determining, by the control unit, whether the actual motion deviates from the desired motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector by more than a predetermined threshold; and

halting, by the control unit, motion of a second repositionable arm and a second end effector and move the first repositionable arm and the first end effector when the actual motion deviates from the desired motion by more than the predetermined threshold, wherein:

the second repositionable arm includes one or more second repositionable elements for positioning the second repositionable arm, and

the second end effector is mounted to the second repositionable arm.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the command is based on movement of one or more input controls.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein halting motion of the second repositionable arm and the second end effector further depends on a mode in which the second repositionable arm and the second end effector are being operated.

The method of claim 16 , wherein determining whether the actual motion deviates from the desired motion by more than the predetermined threshold comprises determining a composite deviation in a plurality of kinematic or dynamic values associated with the first repositionable arm or the first end effector, and wherein determining the composite deviation comprises:

determining, for each kinematic or dynamic value in the plurality of kinematic or dynamic values, a difference between an actual value and a corresponding desired value to generate a combined set of variation values; and

computing, from the combined set of variation values, the composite deviation.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein halting motion of the second repositionable arm and the second end effector comprises:

applying a brake of an actuated repositionable element of the one or more second repositionable elements; and

setting a feedback torque for the actuated repositionable element to zero.

21. The method of claim 16 , further comprising providing, by the control unit, an audio or visual instruction on how to clear a condition causing the halting of the motion of the second repositionable arm and the second end effector.

22. One or more non-transitory machine-readable media comprising a plurality of machine-readable instructions that, when executed by one or more processors associated with a computer-assisted medical device, cause the one or more processors to perform a method comprising:

controlling motion of a first repositionable arm and a first end effector so that the first repositionable arm and the first end effector have a desired motion, wherein:

the first repositionable arm includes one or more first repositionable elements for positioning the first repositionable arm, and

the first end effector is mounted to the first repositionable arm;

receiving a command indicating a desired motion that is to be performed by the first repositionable arm and the first end effector;

monitoring, based on sensor data acquired by one or more sensors, an actual motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector;

determining whether the actual motion deviates from the desired motion by more than a predetermined threshold; and

halting motion of a second repositionable arm and a second end effector and move the first repositionable arm and the first end effector when the actual motion deviates from the desired motion by more than the predetermined threshold, wherein:

the second repositionable arm includes one or more second repositionable elements for positioning the second repositionable arm, and

the second end effector is mounted to the second repositionable arm.

23. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable media of claim 22 , wherein the command is based on movement of one or more input controls.
