Abstract

A system is provided that includes a Q3D endoscope disposed to image a field of view and a processor that produces a Q3D model of a scene and identifies target instruments and structures. The processor is configured to display the scene from a virtual field of view of an instrument, to determine a no fly zone around targets, to determine a predicted path for said instruments or to provide 3D tracking of said instruments.

Claims (44)

1. A system for maneuvering a surgical instrument, comprising:

a display screen;

a quantitative three-dimensional (Q3D) endoscope having a field of view and disposed to image a scene that includes at least one instrument and anatomical structure within the field of view; at least one processor configured to,

determine a Q3D model of the scene imaged by the Q3D endoscope;

identify a Q3D model of the least one instrument within the Q3D model of the imaged scene;

identify a Q3D model of the anatomical structure within the Q3D model of the imaged scene;

determine a predicted path of the identified Q3D model of the at least one instrument based at least in part upon at least one of extrapolation from a previous path followed by the identified Q3D model of the at least one instrument and a virtual extension of the Q3D model of the at least one identified instrument;

determine a contact surface location at a surface of the Q3D model of the anatomical structure at an intersection between the predicted path and a surface of the identified Q3D model of the anatomical structure;

causing display on the display screen of a three-dimensional image of the identified anatomical structure that includes a visual marker at a location corresponding to the determined contact surface location at the surface of the Q3D model.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system comprises an input allowing a user to select said at least one instrument from a set of instruments.

3. The system of claim 1 ,

wherein the processor is further configured to determine said previous path from one or more 3D poses of the identified instrument within said Q3D model at each of one or more different time points.

4. The system of claim 1 ,

wherein the processor is further configured to determine a Q3D model of a scene imaged by the Q3D endoscope at each of multiple times;

determine a position of the at least one instrument within the imaged scene at each of the multiple times;

determine the previous path based upon the determined positions of the at least one instrument within the imaged scene at each of the multiple times.

5. The system of claim 1 ,

wherein determining a predicted path of the identified instrument based upon a virtual extension of the identified instrument further includes:

determining a 3D poses of the identified instrument within the Q3D model.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor comprises an input allowing the user to select said one or more time points.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor comprises an input allowing the user to select a desired contact location between said instrument and said structure.

8. The system of claim 1 ,

wherein the processor is further configured to,

produce a 3D virtual extension image of the identified instrument based at least in part upon said predicted path.

9. A method for maneuvering a surgical instrument within a scene imaged by a quantitative three-dimensional (Q3D) endoscope comprising:

determining a Q3D model of a scene imaged by the Q3D endoscope that includes at least one instrument and anatomical structure;

identifying a Q3D model of the at least one instrument within the Q3D model of the imaged scene; and

identifying a Q3D model of the anatomical structure within the Q3D model of the imaged scene;

determining a predicted path of the identified Q3D model of the at least one instrument based at least in part upon at least one of extrapolation from a previous path followed by the identified Q3D model of the at least one instrument and a virtual extension of the identified Q3D model of the at least one instrument;

determining a contact surface location at a surface of the Q3D model of the anatomical structure at an intersection between the predicted path and a surface of the identified Q3D model of the anatomical structure;

causing display on a display screen of a three-dimensional image of the identified anatomical structure that includes a visual marker at a location corresponding to the determined contact surface location at the surface of the Q3D model.

10. The method of claim 9 further including:

receiving user input to select said at least one instrument from a set of instruments.

11. The method of claim 9 further including:

determining said previous path from one or more 3D poses of the identified instrument within said Q3D model at each of one or more different time points.

12. The method of claim 9 further including:

determining a Q3D model of a scene imaged by the Q3D endoscope at each of multiple times;

determining a position of the at least one instrument within the imaged scene at each of the multiple times; and

determining the previous path based upon the determined positions of the at least one instrument within the imaged scene at each of the multiple times.

13. The method of claim 9 further including:

wherein determining a predicted path of the identified instrument based upon a virtual extension of the identified instrument further includes:

determining a 3D poses of the identified instrument within the Q3D model.

14. The method of claim 9 further including:

producing a 3D virtual extension image of the identified instrument based at least in part upon said predicted path.
