Abstract

Systems, methods, and computer-readable media are disclosed for roll-formed containers for shipping. In one embodiment, an example method may include determining, using a first sensor system, a first dimension of a first item, determining a length of packaging material to use for packing the first item based at least in part on the first dimension, and causing a first crease line and a second crease line to be formed on a surface of the packaging material. Some methods may include causing a first side of the packaging material to be folded over the first item, causing a second side of the packaging material to be folded over the first side of the packaging material to form an overlapping portion, and causing ends of the packaging material to be pressed to form a package, where the first item is disposed in the package.

Claims (56)

1. A method comprising:

determining, using a first sensor system, a first dimension of a first item;

determining a length of packaging material to use for packing the first item based at least in part on the first dimension;

causing, based at least in part on the first dimension, a first crease line and a second crease line to be formed on a surface of the packaging material, wherein the packaging material has a width;

causing a first cut to be formed along the width of the packaging material, the first cut having a first length that is less than half the width of the packaging material;

causing a second cut to be formed along the width of the packaging material, the second cut having the first length;

causing a first side of the packaging material to be folded over the first item; and

causing ends of the packaging material to be sealed to form a package, wherein the first item is disposed in the package.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

causing a second side of the packaging material to be folded over the first side of the packaging material to form an overlapping portion; and

causing the first item to be transported to the packaging material via a conveyor moving at a first speed, wherein the packaging material is moving at the first speed when the first item flows onto the packaging material.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

causing, using one or more adjustable rollers, a first crease pattern to be formed adjacent to the first crease line on the surface of the packaging material; and

causing, using the one or more adjustable rollers, a second crease pattern to be formed adjacent to the second crease line on the surface of the packaging material.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, using a second sensor system, that the first item is positioned in a first position on the packaging material that exceeds a predetermined boundary; and

causing the first item to be repositioned from the first position to a second position within the predetermined boundary.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

causing the packaging material to advance from a roll of packaging material until the length of packaging material to use for packing the first item is advanced; and

wherein a height of the package is adjustable by adjusting an amount of overlap of the overlapping portion.

6. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the packaging material is coupled to an adjacent portion of packaging material via a portion of the packaging material between the first cut and the second cut, and wherein a second item is disposed on the adjacent portion of packaging material.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

causing a third cut across the portion of the packaging material between the first cut and the second cut to separate the packaging material from the adjacent portion of packaging material.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the packaging material comprises a rectangular shape, the method further comprising:

causing an adhesive to be applied along three edges of the packaging material.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the packaging material is a roll-formed and non-Gaussian material.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the packaging material is a paper-based material.

11. A method comprising:

determining, using a first sensor system, a first dimension of a first item;

determining a length of packaging material to use for packing the first item based at least in part on the first dimension;

causing, based at least in part on the first dimension, a first crease line and a second crease line to be formed on a surface of the packaging material, wherein the packaging material has a width;

causing a first cut to be formed along the width of the packaging material, the first cut having a first length that is less than half the width of the packaging material;

causing a first side of the packaging material to be folded over the first item; and

causing ends of the packaging material to be sealed to form a package, wherein the first item is disposed in the package;

wherein the packaging material is coupled to an adjacent portion of packaging material via a portion of the packaging material between the first cut and the second cut, and wherein a second item is disposed on the adjacent portion of packaging material.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

causing a second side of the packaging material to be folded over the first side of the packaging material to form an overlapping portion; and

causing the first item to be transported to the packaging material via a conveyor moving at a first speed, wherein the packaging material is moving at the first speed when the first item flows onto the packaging material.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

causing, using one or more adjustable rollers, a first crease pattern to be formed adjacent to the first crease line on the surface of the packaging material; and

causing, using the one or more adjustable rollers, a second crease pattern to be formed adjacent to the second crease line on the surface of the packaging material.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

determining, using a second sensor system, that the first item is positioned in a first position on the packaging material that exceeds a predetermined boundary; and

causing the first item to be repositioned from the first position to a second position within the predetermined boundary.

15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

causing the packaging material to advance from a roll of packaging material until the length of packaging material to use for packing the first item is advanced; and

wherein a height of the package is adjustable by adjusting an amount of overlap of the overlapping portion.

16. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

causing a second cut to be formed along the width of the packaging material, the second cut having the first length that is less than half the width of the packaging material.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising:

causing a third cut across the portion of the packaging material between the first cut and the second cut to separate the packaging material from the adjacent portion of packaging material.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the packaging material comprises a rectangular shape, the method further comprising:

causing an adhesive to be applied along three edges of the packaging material.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the packaging material is a roll-formed and non-Gaussian material.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein the packaging material is a paper-based material.
