Abstract

Various embodiments of intervertebral implants, anchoring devices for intervertebral implants, and implantation instrumentation are provided, along with various embodiments of methods for using one or more of the devices. Some embodiments of an anchoring device have a body comprising at least one curve and a rigid plate elongated along a longitudinal axis so that its front end enters at least one vertebra while its rear end remains in the passage of an implant. In some embodiments, the plate comprises at least one longitudinal slot separating at least one posterior portion of the plate into two branches, with at least one branch comprising at least one withdrawal stop configured to retain the device in the implant.

Claims (13)

1. An implant insertion instrument comprising:

an anchor holder comprising a body including a length and a width and at least one guiding surface configured to guide a curved vertebral anchor into an implant;

an elongate guide comprising a first end including a handle and a second end including a guide head, the guide head including an implant interface and a slot forming a passage through the guide head, the slot to receive the anchor holder; and

an impactor configured to couple alongside the elongate guide, the impactor comprising a pusher end coupled to an impactor head via a longitudinal body, the impactor head including a pair of arms configured to engage the curved vertebral anchor on either side of the anchor holder,

wherein the slot in the guide head traverses the guide head and includes a size and a shape to accommodate at least a portion of the anchor holder and the pair of arms of the impactor head within the passage.

2. The implant insertion instrument of claim 1 , wherein the slot in the guide head includes an anchor surface complementary to the at least one guiding surface to assist in guiding the curved vertebral anchor into a passage in a proximal end of the implant.

3. The implant insertion instrument of claim 2 , wherein the pair of arms of the impactor head engage the curved vertebral anchor to advance the curved vertebral anchor through the anchor holder and guide head into the passage in the implant upon advancement of the impactor in reference to the elongate guide.

4. The implant insertion instrument of claim 1 , wherein the implant interface includes a pair of gripping features, at least one of the pair of gripping features extending past a distal end of the guide head to engage the implant.

5. The implant insertion instrument of claim 4 , wherein at least one of the pair of gripping features is a threaded rod to secure the implant to the distal end of the guide head.

6. The implant insertion instrument of claim 5 , wherein the threaded rod of the pair of gripping features extends proximally along the elongate guide to a knob on a proximal side of the handle.

7. The implant insertion instrument of claim 6 , wherein the pair of gripping features includes a lug disposed in a fixed position within the guide head.

8. The implant insertion instrument of claim 6 , wherein the pair of gripping features includes tab extending from a lateral side of the guide head to engage a groove in a lateral side of the implant.

9. The implant insertion instrument of claim 1 , wherein the impactor head includes at least one guide tab extending transverse to the pair of arms to guide the impactor along an elongate body of the elongate guide.
