Abstract

A nozzle for printing three-dimensional parts with an additive manufacturing system, the nozzle comprising a nozzle body having an inlet end and a tip end offset longitudinally from the inlet end, a tip pipe for extruding a flowable material, an inner ring extending circumferentially around the tip pipe at the outlet end, an outer ring extending circumferentially around the inner ring, at least one annular recessed groove located circumferentially between the inner ring and the outer ring.

Claims (33)

1. A method for printing a part with an extrusion-based additive manufacturing system, the method comprising:

feeding a consumable material to a print head retained by the extrusion-based additive manufacturing system, wherein the print head includes a flow channel and a nozzle, the nozzle comprising an extrusion port, an inner ring, an outer ring extending circumferentially around the inner ring, and at least one annular recessed groove located circumferentially between the inner ring and the outer ring;

melting the consumable material in the flow channel;

extruding the molten material from the nozzle at a first flow rate to produce a first road of the extruded material having a first road width, wherein the extruded material for producing the first road draws down and does not contact the outer ring; and

extruding the molten material from the nozzle at a second flow rate that is greater than the first flow rate to produce a second road of the extruded material, wherein the second road has a second road width that is greater than the first road width of the first road.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the inner ring comprises a planar bottom face extending between the extrusion port and an outer edge of the inner ring, and wherein the planar bottom face of the inner ring guides the extruded material to produce the first road.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the inner ring comprises an outer diameter that ranges from about 500 micrometers to about 1,300 micrometers.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the outer ring comprises a knife-edge face.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the outer ring has a knife-edge diameter ranging from about 1,500 micrometers to about 2,500 micrometers.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first road is at least a portion of a perimeter of the part, and wherein the second road is at least a portion of an interior portion of the part.

7. A method for printing a part with an extrusion-based additive manufacturing system, the method comprising:

feeding a consumable material to a print head retained by the extrusion-based additive manufacturing system, wherein the print head includes a flow channel and a nozzle, the nozzle comprising an inner ring proximate an extrusion port wherein the inner ring has a first diameter, an outer ring substantially concentric with the inner ring, the outer ring having a second diameter, and at least one annular groove is located between the inner ring and the outer ring;

melting the consumable material in the flow channel;

extruding the molten material from the nozzle at a first flow rate to produce a first road of the extruded material having a first road width substantially similar to the first diameter of the inner ring; and

extruding the molten material from the nozzle at a second flow rate that is greater than the first flow rate to produce a second road of the extruded material, wherein the second road has a second road width that is greater than the first road width of the first road, wherein the second road width of the second road is substantially similar to the second diameter of the outer ring.

8. The method of claim 7 and further comprising:

identifying perimeter roads and interior fill roads of a layer of a part to be printed; and

printing the layer of the part using the print head where the perimeter roads are printed at the first flow rate and the interior fill roads are printed at the second flow rate.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the first road comprises at least a portion of an outer surface of the part and wherein the second road comprises an interior region of the part.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the inner ring comprises a planar bottom face extending between the extrusion port and an outer edge of the inner ring, and wherein the planar bottom face of the inner ring guides the extruded material to produce the first road.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the first diameter ranges from about 500 micrometers to about 1,300 micrometers.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the outer ring comprises a knife-edge face.

13. The method of claim 7 , wherein the second diameter ranges from about 1,500 micrometers to about 2,500 micrometers.

14. A method for printing a part with an extrusion-based additive manufacturing system, the method comprising:

identifying perimeter roads and interior fill roads of a layer of a digital representation of the part to be printed;

feeding a consumable material to a print head retained by the extrusion-based additive manufacturing system, wherein the print head includes a flow channel and a nozzle, the nozzle comprising an inner ring proximate an extrusion port wherein the inner ring has a first diameter, an outer ring substantially concentric with the inner ring, the outer ring having a second diameter, and at least one annular groove is located between the inner ring and the outer ring;

melting the consumable material in the flow channel;

extruding the molten material at a first flow rate to produce at least a portion of the perimeter roads of the extruded material having a first road width substantially similar to the first diameter of the inner ring corresponding to first portions of the digital representation of the part; and

extruding the molten material from the nozzle at a second flow rate that is greater than the first flow rate to produce the interior fill roads of the extruded material corresponding to second portions of the digital representation of the part, wherein the interior fill roads have a second road width that is greater than the first road width of the at least a portion of the perimeter roads, wherein the second road width of the interior fill roads is substantially similar to the second diameter of the outer ring.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the inner ring comprises a planar bottom face extending between the extrusion port and an outer edge of the inner ring, and wherein the planar bottom face of the inner ring guides the extruded material to produce the first road.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first diameter ranges from about 500 micrometers to about 1,300 micrometers.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the outer ring comprises a knife-edge face.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the second diameter ranges from about 1,500 micrometers to about 2,500 micrometers.
