Abstract

A smart battery includes a battery and a measurement module coupled to measure electrical characteristics of the battery. The smart battery also includes processing logic and a communication interface configured to receive the electrical characteristics and transmit the electrical characteristics to a receiver.

Claims (60)

1. A system for deploying unmanned vehicles, the system comprising:

at least a first smart battery removably installed on a first unmanned vehicle and a second smart battery removably installed on a second unmanned vehicle, wherein each of the first and second smart batteries comprises:

a battery,

a measurement module coupled to the battery and configured to measure electrical characteristics thereof,

processing logic coupled to the measurement module and configured to cause the measurement module to measure the electrical characteristics multiple times over a period of time,

a memory coupled to the processing logic and configured to store electrical data comprising a time series of the electrical characteristics measured over the period of time, and

a wireless communication interface configured to receive and transmit the electrical data; and

a server communicatively coupled to the first and second smart batteries via a network and configured to:

receive and store first electrical data from the first smart battery installed on the first unmanned vehicle and second electrical data from the second smart battery installed on the second unmanned vehicle,

select one of the first and second unmanned vehicles for performing a deployment mission based on the first and second electrical data, and

transmit a deployment command to a selected one of the first and second unmanned vehicles.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the time series of the electrical characteristics serves as an indicator of time left to a battery cell failure.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the electrical characteristics include one of an energy capacity of the battery and a number of charge cycles the battery has received over a lifetime of the battery.

The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second smart batteries comprises a charging module and the system further comprises a charger, wherein the wireless communication interface is configured to transmit the electrical data to the charger, and wherein the charger is configured to transmit the electrical data to the server.

The system of claim 4 , wherein the charging module comprises a receive charging coil configured to receive wireless energy for charging the battery, and wherein the charger is a wireless charger comprising a power delivery module including a transmit charging coil to deliver the wireless energy to the receive charging coil.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the wireless charger further comprises a receiver, and wherein the wireless communication interface of each of the first and second smart batteries is configured to transmit the electrical data to the receiver of the wireless charger.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the wireless communication interface is configured to further transmit to the receiver of the wireless charger one or both of:

a unique identifier identifying a respective one of the first and second unmanned vehicles; and

a unique identifier identifying a respective one of the first and second smart batteries.

8. The system of claim 4 , wherein each of the first and second unmanned vehicles includes a propulsion mechanism, and wherein the deployment command comprises one or more of:

propulsion instructions to complete the deployment mission;

propulsion instructions to return to a base station; and

instructions to disable the propulsion mechanism.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processing logic is configured:

to receive a unique identifier identifying each of the first and second unmanned vehicles; and

wirelessly transmit through the communication interface the unique identifier of each of the first and second unmanned vehicles for selecting one of the first and second unmanned vehicles.

The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second smart batteries comprises a unique identifier, and the processing logic is configured to cause the wireless communication interface to wirelessly transmit the unique identifier of each of the first and second smart batteries to identify the first and second smart batteries for selecting one of the first and second smart batteries.

11. A smart battery configured to be removably installed on an unmanned vehicle, the smart battery comprising:

a battery;

a measurement module coupled to the battery and configured to measure electrical characteristics thereof;

processing logic coupled to the measurement module and configured to cause the measurement module to measure the electrical characteristics multiple times over a period of time;

a memory coupled to the processing logic and configured to store electrical data comprising a time series of the electrical characteristics measured over the period of time; and

a wireless communication interface configured to receive and transmit the electrical data to a wireless receiver of a wireless charger,

wherein the time series of electrical characteristics serves as an indicator of time left to a battery cell failure, and

wherein the smart battery is configured to be communicatively coupled to a network through the wireless receiver of the wireless charger, the network configured to:

receive and store the electrical data,

determine whether or not to select the unmanned vehicle having installed thereon the smart battery for performing a deployment mission based on the electrical data, and

send a deployment command to the unmanned vehicle having the smart battery installed thereon.

12. The smart battery of claim 11 , wherein the electrical characteristics include one of an energy capacity of the battery and a number of charge cycles the battery has received over a lifetime of the battery.

13. The smart battery of claim 11 , wherein the wireless communication interface is configured to transmit the electrical data to the network through the wireless charger.

14. The smart battery of claim 12 , wherein the smart battery comprises a receive charging coil configured to receive wireless energy for charging the battery from a transmit charging coil of the wireless charger.

15. The smart battery of claim 12 , wherein the wireless communication interface of the smart battery is configured to further transmit to the wireless receiver of the wireless charger one or both of:

a unique identifier identifying the unmanned vehicle on which the smart battery is installed; and

a unique identifier identifying the smart battery.

16. A method for deploying unmanned vehicles, the method comprising:

providing a smart battery removably installed on an unmanned vehicle, the smart battery comprising a battery, a measurement module coupled to the battery, processing logic coupled to the measurement module, a memory coupled to the measurement module and a wireless communication interface;

causing the measurement module to measure electrical characteristics of the battery multiple times over a period of time using the processing logic;

storing in the memory electrical data comprising a time series of the electrical characteristics measured over the period of time;

transmitting the electrical data using the wireless communication interface to a wireless receiver of a wireless charger,

wherein the time series of electrical characteristics serves as an indicator of time left to a battery cell failure;

receiving the electrical data from the wireless charger and storing the electrical data over a network;

determining whether or not to select the unmanned vehicle having installed thereon the smart battery for performing a deployment mission based on the electrical data; and

sending a deployment command to the unmanned vehicle having the smart battery installed thereon.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the unmanned vehicle includes a propulsion mechanism, and wherein the deployment command comprises one or more of:

propulsion instructions to complete the deployment mission;

propulsion instructions to return to a base station; and

instructions to disable the propulsion mechanism.

18. The method of claim 16 , further comprising transmitting to the wireless receiver of the wireless charger one or both of:

a unique identifier identifying the unmanned vehicle on which the smart battery is installed; and

a unique identifier identifying the smart battery.
