Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for operating a firearm, including communicating with a connected device via a communication interface, detecting a local energy source in a radio frequency, and harvesting power from the local energy source in the radio frequency via a wireless-energy harvesting mechanism having a receiving antenna configured to receive the local energy source in the radio frequency, a rectifier configured to convert the received signal to direct current, and a DC-DC converter configured to alter voltage of the direct current to a desired voltage.

Claims (31)

1. A method of operating a firearm, the method comprising:

communicating with a connected device via a communication interface;

detecting, via the communication interface, a local energy source in a radio frequency; and

harvesting, in response to detecting the local energy source in the radio frequency, power from the local energy source in the radio frequency via a wireless-energy harvesting mechanism having a receiving antenna configured to receive the local energy source in the radio frequency, a rectifier configured to convert the received signal to direct current, and a DC-DC converter configured to alter voltage of the direct current to a desired voltage.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the firearm includes a controller running application software configured to increase, in response to harvesting power from the local energy source in the radio frequency, a data collection rate for at least one sensor coupled to the firearm.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the data collection rate is adjusted based on the amount of energy being harvested.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power harvested from the local energy source in the radio frequency is combined with energy harvested from a motion of the firearm.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the energy harvested from the motion of the firearm derives at least in part from a recoil of the firearm.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power harvested from the local energy source in the radio frequency is combined with energy harvested from a wearable device in proximity to the firearm.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power harvested from the local energy source in the radio frequency is used to charge a battery in proximity to a user of the firearm.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power harvested from the local energy source in the radio frequency is combined with energy harvested from local energy in a second radio frequency in proximity to the firearm.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the power harvested from the local energy source in the radio frequency is combined with locally stored energy.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power harvested from the local energy source in the radio frequency is combined with energy from electromagnetic frequencies transmitted by other devices in proximity to the firearm.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wireless-energy harvesting mechanism includes a circuit for harvesting electromagnetic radiation.

12. A system for firearm monitoring, the system comprising:

a server device running application software that receives signals from firearms regarding usage thereof; and

a firearm including a battery configured to power components of the firearm;

a communication interface configured to transmit data wirelessly to a connected device; and

a controller operatively coupled to the communication interface, the controller running application software configured to:

power, via the battery, the components of the firearm in a first sensing mode;

monitor, via the communication interface, density of electromagnetic radiation proximate the firearm;

harvest, in response to the electromagnetic radiation density exceeding a predetermined threshold, power from the electromagnetic radiation via a wireless-energy harvesting mechanism having a receiving antenna configured to receive local energy source in a radio frequency, a rectifier configured to convert the received local energy source in the radio frequency to direct current, and a DC-DC converter configured to alter voltage of the direct current to a desired voltage; and

operate, via the battery and the harvested power, the components of the firearm in a second sensing mode, the second sensing mode expending more energy than the first sensing mode.

13. The firearm of claim 12 , wherein the application software of the controller is further configured to increase, in response to harvesting power from the local energy source in the radio frequency, a data collection rate for at least one sensor coupled to the firearm.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the power harvested from the local energy source in the radio frequency is combined with energy harvested from a motion of the firearm.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the power harvested from the local energy source in the radio frequency is combined with energy harvested from a wearable device in proximity to the firearm.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the power harvested from the local energy source in the radio frequency is used to charge a battery in proximity to a user of the firearm.

17. The system of claim 12 , wherein the power harvested from the local energy source in the radio frequency is combined with energy harvested from local energy in a second radio frequency in proximity to the firearm.

18. The system of claim 12 , wherein the power harvested from the local energy source in the radio frequency is combined with locally stored energy.

19. The system of claim 12 , wherein the power harvested from the local energy source in the radio frequency is combined with energy from electromagnetic frequencies transmitted by other devices in proximity to the firearm.

20. The system of claim 12 , wherein the wireless-energy harvesting mechanism includes a circuit for harvesting electromagnetic radiation.
