Abstract

System and methods for pre-fetching data are provided. In one embodiment, an electronic device includes communications circuitry communicatively coupled to a data provider system over a network to obtain streaming data for completion of tasks. The electronic device also includes pre-fetch circuitry that identifies a dead zone in the network; calculates a pre-fetch data size amount based at least in part upon a size of the dead zone; and requests the pre-fetch data size amount of the data, to mitigate lost streaming ability in the dead zone.

5. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the beacon comprises a traffic light.

6. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the pre-fetch circuitry is configured to determine whether there is enough time to download the pre-fetch data size amount of data; and

when there is enough time, download the pre-fetch data size amount of data.

7. The electronic device of claim 6 , wherein the pre-fetch circuitry is configured to:

when there is not enough time, perform a mitigation action.

8. The electronic device of claim 7 , wherein the mitigation action comprises prioritizing one type of the data over another type of the data.

9. The electronic device of claim 7 , wherein the mitigation action comprises reducing a granularity of the data to reduce an amount of the data to download.

10. The electronic device of claim 9 , wherein the data comprises mapping data reduced by reducing the mapping data to roads expected to travel.

11. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the pre-fetch circuitry is configured to determine the pre-fetch data size amount of the data based upon whether the data is dead-zone-duration-dependent.

12. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

receiving, via a beacon, a beacon signal, while a vehicle is travelling a path, the beacon signal comprising a plurality of directional indications, the plurality of directional indications each indicating one of a plurality of upcoming dead zones, the plurality of upcoming dead zones each corresponding to a potential path of the vehicle and a dead zone size, a dead zone duration, dead zone boundaries, or any combination thereof for each upcoming dead zone of the plurality of upcoming dead zones;

identifying, via pre-fetch circuitry, based upon the beacon signal, an upcoming dead zone of the plurality of upcoming dead zones in a network that communicatively couples communications circuitry and a data provider system to provide, to the communications circuitry, from the data provider system, streaming data for completion of tasks;

calculating, via the pre-fetch circuitry, a pre-fetch data size amount based at least in part upon the dead zone size, the dead zone duration, the dead zone boundaries, or any combination thereof; and

requesting, via the pre-fetch circuitry, the pre-fetch data size amount of the data, to mitigate lost streaming ability in the upcoming dead zone of the plurality of upcoming dead zones.

13. The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , comprising:

identifying, via the pre-fetch circuitry, a travel vector of an electronic device; and

identifying, via the pre-fetch circuitry, the upcoming dead zone based upon the travel vector.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the beacon comprises a multi-directional beacon.

15. The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , comprising:

determining whether there is enough time to download the pre-fetch data size amount of data;

when there is enough time, downloading the pre-fetch data size amount of data;

when there is not enough time, performing a mitigation action, wherein the mitigation action comprises:

prioritizing one type of the data over another type of the data;

reducing a granularity of the data to reduce an amount of the data to download; or

both.

16. The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , comprising determining whether the streaming data is dead-zone-duration-independent or dead-zone-duration-dependent;

in response to determining that the streaming data is dead-zone-duration-independent, calculating, via the pre-fetch circuitry, a pre-fetch data size amount based at least in part upon a size of the upcoming dead zone;

in response to determining that the streaming data is dead-zone-duration-dependent, calculating, via the pre-fetch circuitry, a pre-fetch size amount based at least in part upon the duration of the upcoming dead zone; and

requesting, via the pre-fetch circuitry, the pre-fetch data size amount of the data, to mitigate lost streaming ability in the upcoming dead zone.

17. The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein calculating the data pre-fetch size amount comprises, at least in part, calculating a rate at which data is consumed.
