Abstract

Systems, methods, and computer software for detecting atrial fibrillation are described. Photoplethysmographic (PPG) signal data may be received as communicated by a PPG sensor of a wearable device worn by a user. Heartbeats from a portion of the PPG signal data may be determined and a heart rhythm type may be determined based on at least the heartbeats. A determination of whether the heart rhythm type includes Atrial Fibrillation (AF) may be made, and, when AF is detected, an AF detection alert may be displayed at the wearable device.

Claims (37)

1. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory, machine-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by at least one programmable processor, caused at least one programmable processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving photoplethysmographic (PPG) signal data communicated by a PPG sensor of a wearable device worn by a user;

determining a plurality of heartbeats from at least a portion of the PPG signal data;

determining a heart rhythm type based on at least the plurality of heartbeats;

determining whether the heart rhythm type includes Atrial Fibrillation (AF);

determining an occupancy metric based at least partially on an interval scatter analysis, wherein determining the heart rhythm type further includes utilization of the occupancy metric, the occupancy metric further determined by operations comprising:

determining a plurality of points that represent heartbeat interval changes over a period of time;

defining bins into which the plurality of points may fall; and

determining the occupancy metric by determining a fraction of bins that contain at least one of the plurality of points; and

displaying, when AF is detected, an AF detection alert at the wearable device.

2. The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the points represent a change between two adjacent heartbeat intervals.

3. The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the period of time is based on a moving window.

4. The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein determining whether the heart rhythm type includes Atrial Fibrillation comprises utilization of the occupancy metric, a distance metric, and an interval variability metric.

5. The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the displaying of the AF detection alert occurs when AF has been determined based on a number of heartbeats greater than an AF detection alert threshold.

6. The computer program product of claim 1 , the operations further comprising:

receiving a patient identification communicated by the wearable device; and

generating the AF detection alert when an authorization is received that indicates a permission to display AF detection alerts to the user.

7. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory, machine-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by at least one programmable processor, caused at least one programmable processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving photoplethysmographic (PPG) signal data communicated by a PPG sensor of a wearable device worn by a user;

determining a plurality of heartbeats from at least a portion of the PPG signal data;

determining a distance metric based at least partially on points representing heartbeat interval changes;

determining a heart rhythm type based on at least the plurality of heartbeats, wherein determining the heart rhythm type further includes utilization of the distance metric;

determining whether the heart rhythm type includes Atrial Fibrillation (AF); and

displaying, when AF is detected, an AF detection alert at the wearable device.

8. The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein the distance metric is determined by operations comprising:

determining a plurality of points that represent heartbeat interval changes over a period of time; and

determining the distance metric by determining a median of distances between the plurality of points.

9. The computer program product of claim 8 , wherein the distances are determined between consecutive points.

10. The computer program product of claim 8 , wherein the period of time is based on a moving window.

11. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory, machine-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by at least one programmable processor, caused at least one programmable processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving photoplethysmographic (PPG) signal data communicated by a PPG sensor of a wearable device worn by a user;

determining a plurality of heartbeats from at least a portion of the PPG signal data;

determining an interval variability metric based on a plurality of heartbeat intervals derived from the plurality of heartbeats, wherein the interval variability metric is a median of absolute changes in heartbeat intervals;

determining a heart rhythm type based on at least the plurality of heartbeats, wherein determining the heart rhythm type further includes utilization of the interval variability metric;

determining whether the heart rhythm type includes Atrial Fibrillation (AF); and

displaying, when AF is detected, an AF detection alert at the wearable device.

12. The computer program product of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of heartbeat intervals are included within a moving window.
