Abstract

An electronic locking system is operable to prevent a firearm from firing. The firearm includes an operating mechanism. The electronic locking system includes a power source configured to store electrical energy used to operate the electronic locking system; and a power generation element configured to generate electrical energy as a result of an operation of the operating mechanism, wherein at least a portion of the electrical energy generated by the power generation element is received by the power source.

Claims (32)

1. An electronic locking system operable to prevent a firearm from firing, the firearm including a firing chamber, an operating mechanism that is displaced to feed a cartridge into the firing chamber, and a body portion that is in a fixed position when the cartridge is fed into the firing chamber, the electronic locking system comprising:

a power source configured to store electrical energy used to operate the electronic locking system; and

a power generation element located in the body portion of the firearm, the power generation element mechanically engaged with the operating mechanism such that a displacement of the operating mechanism causes the power generation element to move in a manner that generates electrical energy,

wherein at least a portion of the electrical energy generated by the power generation element is received by the power source, and

wherein the electronic locking system is operable in each of a first state in which the firearm is operational to fire in a conventional manner and a second state in which the firearm is prevented from firing.

2. The electronic locking system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic locking system is configured to prevent the firearm from firing based on a geographic location of the firearm.

3. The electronic locking system of claim 1 , further comprising a wireless communication system,

wherein the wireless communication system is configured to receive a wireless signal as a result of geographic location of the firearm.

4. The electronic locking system of claim 3 , further comprising at least one of an inertial navigation system, a system in communication with a satellite-based positioning system and a system for triangulation via a cellular network.

5. The electronic locking system of claim 3 , further comprising a processor configured to process information provided by the wireless signal.

6. The electronic locking system of claim 5 , further comprising an actuator coupled to the processor and configured to place the electronic locking system in each of the first state and the second state.

7. The electronic locking system of claim 6 , wherein the processor is configured to provide a locking signal to the actuator to change a state of the actuator based on the information provided by the wireless signal.

8. The electronic locking system of claim 6 , wherein the actuator includes at least one of a linear actuator, a rotary actuator, a solenoid, a motor and a MEMS device.

9. The electronic locking system of claim 6 , wherein electrical energy stored by the power source is employed to change a state of the electronic locking system from the first state to the second state.

10. A firearm including the electronic locking system of claim 1 .

11. The firearm of claim 10 , wherein the electronic locking system further comprises:

a rechargeable battery included in the power source and configured to store at least some of the electrical energy generated by the power generation element; and

a voltage regulator configured to provide an output voltage from the electrical energy generated by the power generation element.

12. The electronic locking system of claim 1 , wherein the power generation element is mechanically coupled to the operating mechanism via an engagement surface.

13. The electronic locking system of claim 1 , wherein the power generation element includes a motor operated as a generator to generate electricity, and

wherein the motor includes a rotor mechanically coupled to the operating mechanism.

14. The electronic locking system of claim 1 , wherein the power generation element is configured to mechanically couple to at least one of a slide, a lever or a revolver cylinder included in the operating mechanism.

15. A method of controlling an operation of a firearm using a location-aware, self-powered electronic locking device, the firearm including a firing chamber, an operating mechanism that is displaced to feed a cartridge into the firing chamber, and a body portion that is in a fixed position when the cartridge is fed into the firing chamber, the method comprising:

including an electronic locking system in the firearm, the electronic locking system operable in each of a first state in which the firearm is operational to fire in a conventional manner and a second state in which the firearm is prevented from firing;

employing the electronic locking system to switch between the first state and the second state based on a change in a geographic location of the firearm; and

including a power generation element in the electronic locking system, the power generation element located in the body portion and mechanically engaged with the operating mechanism such that a displacement of the operating mechanism causes the power generation element to move in a manner that generates electrical energy employed by the electronic locking system.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising generating the electrical energy in response to a user cycling the operating mechanism manually.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising generating the electrical energy in response to a cycling of the operating mechanism occurring when the firearm is fired.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the electronic locking system includes an actuator, and wherein the method further comprises:

employing the electrical energy to move the actuator to a first position placing the firearm in the first state.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising employing the electrical energy to move the actuator to a second position to return the firearm to the second state.

20. The method of claim 15 , further comprising mechanically coupling the power generation element to at least one of a slide, a lever or a revolver cylinder included in the operating mechanism.
