Abstract

A system for remotely presenting and controlling various types of content includes a computing device that receives a unique identifier of a content presentation system. The computing device generates a set of messages that include a first command in a first format, a reference to a piece of content associated with a particular media playing application, an identifier of the particular media playing application, and the unique identifier. The set of messages is communicated to a server system, which sends the content presentation a second command in a second format. The communication causes the content presentation system to utilize the second command and the particular media playing application to control the referenced piece of content.

Claims (32)

1. A non-transitory computer storage medium storing computer-useable that, when used by a personal computing device, cause the personal computing device to perform operations comprising:

receiving a unique identifier of a content presentation system;

generating a set of messages that includes a first command in a first format, a reference to a piece of content associated with a particular media playing application, an identifier that corresponds to the particular media playing application, and the unique identifier;

communicating the generated set of messages to a server system configured to send, to the content presentation system based on the unique identifier, a second command in a second format, the second command being converted from the first command in the first format, wherein the second format is associated with the content presentation system and the second command corresponds to the first command; and

causing the content presentation system to execute the second command based on the communication of the generated set of messages, the execution causing control of the referenced piece of content utilizing the particular media playing application.

2. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the server system is further configured to establish an association between the personal computing device and the content presentation system based on the unique identifier, the generated set of messages being communicated to the content presentation system based on the established association.

3. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the particular media playing application is one of a plurality of media playing applications on the content presentation system that is operable to present and control the presentation of the referenced piece of content.

4. The medium of claim 3 , wherein the second format corresponds to the particular media playing application and is one of a plurality of formats selected to convert the set of messages based on the particular media playing application being operable to present and control the presentation.

5. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the second command is executed utilizing the particular media playing application.

6. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the second format is different than the first format.

7. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the content presentation system downloads the particular media playing application based on the communication.

8. A computer-implemented method for remotely presenting various types of content, the method comprising:

receiving, by a personal computing device, a unique identifier of a content presentation system;

generating, by the personal computing device, a set of messages that includes a first command in a first format, a reference to a piece of content associated with a particular media playing application, an identifier that corresponds to the particular media playing application, and the unique identifier;

communicating, by the personal computing device, the generated set of messages to a server system configured to send, to the content presentation system based on the unique identifier, a second command in a second format, the second command being converted from the set of messages based on each of the first command and a configuration of the particular media playing application, wherein the second format is associated with the particular media playing application and the second command corresponds to the first command; and

causing, by the personal computing device, the content presentation system to utilize the second command and the particular media playing application to control the referenced piece of content.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the control corresponds to each of the first command and the second command.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the server system is further configured to establish an association between the personal computing device and the content presentation system based on the unique identifier, the generated set of messages being communicated to the content presentation system based on the established association.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the particular media playing application is one of a plurality of media playing applications, the particular media playing application being operable to present and control the presentation of the referenced piece of content.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second format corresponds to the particular media playing application and is one of a plurality of formats, the second format being selected to convert the set of messages based on the particular media playing application being operable to present and control the presentation.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the second command is executed utilizing the particular media playing application.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the second format is different than the first format.

15. The method of claim 8 , wherein the content presentation system is further caused to load the particular media playing application based on the communication.

16. A computerized system, comprising:

a personal computing device having an application that (a) obtains a unique identifier of a content presentation device, (b) generates a set of messages that includes a first command in a first format, a reference to content associated with a particular media playing application, an identifier that corresponds to the particular media playing application, and the unique identifier, and (c) communicates the set of messages to a server system,

wherein the communicated set of messages causes the server system to generate a second command in a second format based on (a) the first command and (b) a configuration of the particular media playing application, the second format being associated with the configuration of the particular media playing application, and the second command corresponding to the first command;

a content server that receives a request for the reference to the content and, in response, transmits the content to the content presentation device; and

a content presentation device having the particular media playing application that receives the second command in the second format, and, based on the second command, receives and controls playback of the content.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein at least a portion of the server system is remote from the personal computing device and the content presentation device.

18. The system of claim 16 , wherein the particular media playing application is one of a plurality of media playing applications that is operable to present and control the presentation of content.

19. The system of claim 16 , wherein the second format corresponds to the configuration of the particular media playing application and is one of a plurality of formats, the second format being utilized by the particular media playing application on the content presentation device.

20. The system of claim 16 , wherein the content presentation device further receives a location of the particular media playing application and downloads the particular media playing application.
