Abstract

An access control system includes a plurality of physical access control readers that form a reader network which utilizes a first communication protocol. The system includes a plurality of mobile communication devices each having a first communication interface and a second communication interface. The first communication interface enables the mobile communication devices to access a mobile communication network which utilizes a second communication protocol, and the second communication interface enables the mobile communication devices to communicate with the access control readers. The plurality of physical access control readers exchange status information for the plurality of physical access control readers and for the plurality of mobile communication devices over the reader network.

Claims (33)

1. An access control system, comprising:

a wired reader network comprising a plurality of physical access control readers and at least one access control panel and which utilizes a first communication protocol; and

one or more servers, separate from the at least one access control panel, configured to communicate with a plurality of mobile communication devices via a mobile communication network using a second communication protocol, and configured to store authentication information and provide the authentication information to one or more of the plurality of physical access control readers and one or more of the plurality of mobile communication devices through the reader network and the mobile communication network, respectively;

wherein the plurality of physical access control readers are each configured to communicate with one or more other of the plurality of physical access control readers utilizing a WiFi communication protocol;

wherein the plurality of physical access control readers are each configured to communicate with at least one of the mobile communication devices utilizing a third communication protocol, wherein the third communication protocol comprises a proximity-based protocol; and

wherein the plurality of physical access control readers are each configured to exchange at least one of a notification, device tracking information, device status information, or a reader update, wirelessly using the WiFi communication protocol, with one or more other of the plurality of physical access control readers for use of the at least one of the notification, device tracking information, device status information, or reader update by the one or more other of the plurality of physical access control readers.

2. The access control system of claim 1 , wherein the third communication protocol comprises at least one of a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or near field communication (NFC) protocol.

3. The access control system of claim 2 , wherein the second communication protocol comprises at least one of a cellular, LAN, or WAN protocol.

4. The access control system of claim 3 , wherein the first communication protocol comprises at least one of a Wiegand, RS485, RS232, TCP/IP, Ethernet, or PoE protocol.

5. The access control system of claim 1 , wherein the first communication protocol, second communication protocol, third communication protocol, and WiFi protocol are different communication protocols.

The access control system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of physical access control readers are each configured to exchange at least one of a notification, device tracking information, or device status information with one or more other of the plurality of physical access control readers over the reader network.

The access control system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of physical access control readers are each configured to exchange at least one of a notification, device tracking information, device status information, or a device update with at least one of the mobile communication devices utilizing the third communication protocol.

8. The access control system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one access control panel comprises memory storing access control rules defining which of the plurality of mobile communication devices are allowed access from which of the plurality of physical access control readers.

The access control system of claim 8 , wherein a given physical access control reader of the plurality of physical access control readers communicates with the at least one access control panel utilizing the first communication protocol to make an access control determination for a given one of the mobile communication devices that communicated with the given physical access control reader using the third protocol.

10. An access control system, comprising:

a plurality of physical access control readers that form a reader network which utilizes a WiFi communication protocol, wherein the plurality of physical access control readers are communicatively coupled with at least one access control panel via a wired reader network using a first communication protocol; and

one or more servers, separate from the at least one access control panel, configured to communicate with a plurality of mobile communication devices via a mobile communication network using a second communication protocol, and configured to store authentication information and provide the authentication information to one or more of the plurality of physical access control readers and one or more of the plurality of mobile communication devices through the reader network and the mobile communication network, respectively;

wherein the plurality of physical access control readers are each configured to communicate with at least one of the mobile communication devices utilizing a third communication protocol, wherein the third communication protocol comprises a proximity-based protocol; and

wherein the plurality of physical access control readers are each configured to exchange at least one of a notification, device tracking information, device status information, or a reader update, wirelessly using the WiFi communication protocol, with one or more other of the plurality of physical access control readers for use of the at least one of the notification, device tracking information, device status information, or reader update by the one or more other of the plurality of physical access control readers.

11. The access control system of claim 10 , wherein the third communication protocol comprises at least one of a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or near field communication (NFC) protocol.

12. The access control system of claim 11 , wherein the second communication protocol comprises at least one of a cellular, LAN, or WAN protocol.

13. The access control system of claim 12 , wherein the first communication protocol comprises at least one of a Wiegand, RS485, RS232, TCP/IP, Ethernet, or PoE protocol.

14. The access control system of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of physical access control readers are each configured to exchange at least one of a notification, device tracking information; device status information, or a device update with at least one of the mobile communication devices utilizing the third communication protocol.

15. The access control system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one access control panel comprises memory storing access control rules defining which of the plurality of mobile communication devices are allowed access from which of the plurality of physical access control readers.

16. The access control system of claim 15 , wherein a given physical access control reader of the plurality of physical access control readers communicates with the at least one access control panel utilizing the first communication protocol to make an access control determination for a given one of the mobile communication devices that communicated with the given physical access control reader using the third protocol.

17. A method for an access control system, the method comprising:

forming a wired network that enables communication between plurality of physical access control readers and at least one access control panel utilizing a first communication protocol;

forming a second network that enables communication between the plurality of physical access control readers utilizing a WiFi communication protocol;

enabling communication between the plurality of physical access control readers and a plurality of mobile communication devices using a proximity-based communication protocol;

enabling communication between the plurality of mobile communication devices and one or more servers, separate from the at least one access control panel, via a mobile communication network using a second communication protocol;

receiving authentication information at one or more of the plurality of physical access control readers and one or more of the plurality of mobile communication devices from the one or more servers through the wired network and the mobile communication network, respectively; and

exchanging, wirelessly using the WiFi communication protocol over the second network, at least one of a notification, device tracking information, device status information, or a reader update between two or more of the plurality of physical access control readers for use of the at least one of the notification, device tracking information, device status information, or reader update by each of the two or more of the plurality of physical access control readers.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising exchanging at least one of a notification, device tracking information, device status information, or a device update between at least one of the physical access control readers and at least one of the mobile communication devices utilizing the proximity-based communication protocol.
