Abstract

The present disclosure provides systems and methods for producing a hydrogen storage vessel that is lightweight. The hydrogen storage vessel may comprise an inner body and an outer body structured as concentric rings with a conic interface. The vessel may have four material layers, including a barrier layer, an insulation layer, a fiber knit, and an abrasion layer. The fiber knit may be braided to trap the hydrogen, as the barrier layer may not be completely impermeable. Additionally, the fiber braid may be clamped to the outer body, enabling pressure pushing on the inner body to wedge and seal the storage vessel.

Claims (35)

1. A fuel storage module for storing hydrogen fuel for use in a hydrogen-powered vehicle having a fuel input, comprising:

a rigid frame structure;

a hydrogen fuel storage capsule carried by an internal to the frame structure,

the capsule having an interior volume, the capsule comprising:

a flexible inner first layer defining an interior volume configured to contain the hydrogen fuel therein, wherein the first layer is configured to prevent the hydrogen fuel from passing therethrough;

a fiber-reinforced woven second layer adjacent to and radially outward of the first layer, wherein the second layer captures and supports the first layer and fibers in the second layer carry stresses generated when the hydrogen fuel is pressurized in the interior volume;

a third layer encasing the second layer, with the second layer positioned between the third and first layers, wherein the third layer provides a protective coating over the second layer; and

an end closure coupled to the first, second and third layers, the end closure having an inner boss assembly, an outer boss assembly adjacent to the inner boss, and a locking member coupled to the outer boss, wherein the first layer is captured by the inner boss assembly, and a tag end portion of the second layer extends between the inner boss and the outer boss and is securely captured by the locking member, wherein the locking member engages fiber portions in the tag end portion of the second layer and provides a load transfer interface configured to reduce stress in the fiber portions in the tag end portion captured by the locking member when the hydrogen fuel in the interior volume is pressurized;

a hydrogen flow control assembly coupled to the end closure of the hydrogen fuel storage capsule and communicating with the hydrogen fuel in the interior volume; and

a fuel outlet fitting coupled to the hydrogen flow control assembly and configured to releasably connect to the fuel input of the hydrogen-powered vehicle.

2. The fuel storage module of claim 1 wherein the fiber-reinforced woven second layer comprises aligned fibers and is free of a matrix.

3. The fuel storage module of claim 1 wherein the fiber-reinforced woven second layer comprises aligned fibers and is free of epoxy.

4. The fuel storage module of claim 1 wherein the fiber-reinforced woven second layer comprises a braided carbon fiber sleeve.

5. The fuel storage module of claim 1 wherein the second layer has opposing top and bottom end portions, and the end closure is a first end closure coupled the top end portion, and the storage module further comprising a second end closure coupled to the bottom end portion of the second layer.

6. The fuel storage module of claim 5 wherein the capsule further comprises sensors mounted to the first or second end closure.

7. The fuel storage module of claim 1 wherein the capsule further comprises sensors positioned to detect a condition of the hydrogen fuel in the interior volume.

8. The fuel storage module of claim 1 , wherein the capsule further comprises an insulation layer adjacent to the second layer.

9. The fuel storage module of claim 1 , wherein the load transfer interface is configured to transfer axial loads from the portions of the fibers in the second layer using shear and frictional forces between the end closure and the fibers in the second layer.

10. The fuel storage module of claim 9 wherein the inner boss assembly and the outer boss assembly are nested and concentric to each other.

11. The fuel storage module of claim 1 wherein the hydrogen flow control assembly comprises a flow valve and a pressure regulator.

12. The fuel storage module of claim 1 wherein the hydrogen flow control assembly comprises a pressure regulator and a control module coupled to the pressure regulator.

13. The fuel storage module of claim 1 , wherein the capsule is a first capsule, and further comprising a second capsule carried by the frame structure, the second capsule is adjacent to the first capsule and has a construction the same as the first capsule.

14. A fuel storage module for storing hydrogen fuel for use in a vehicle having a fuel input, comprising:

a frame structure;

a hydrogen fuel storage capsule within the frame structure, the capsule comprising:

an inner, hydrogen-impervious first layer defining an interior volume and being configured to contain the hydrogen fuel therein;

a second fiber layer adjacent to and encasing the first layer, the second layer comprises a plurality of fibers that carry stresses generated when the hydrogen fuel in the interior volume is pressurized;

a third layer encasing the second layer, with the second layer positioned between the third and first layers, wherein the third layer provides a protective coating over the second layer; and

an end closure coupled to the first and second layers, the end closure having an inner boss assembly, an outer boss assembly adjacent to the inner boss, and a locking member coupled to the outer boss, wherein the first layer is captured by the inner boss assembly, and a tag end portion of the second layer extends between the inner boss and the outer boss and is securely captured by the locking member, wherein the locking member engages fiber portions in the tag end portion of the second layer and provides a load transfer interface configured to reduce stress in the fiber portions in the tag end portion captured by the locking member when the hydrogen fuel in the interior volume is pressurized;

a hydrogen flow control assembly coupled to the end closure of the capsule and communicating with the hydrogen fuel in the interior volume; and

a fuel outlet fitting coupled to the hydrogen flow control assembly and configured to releasably connect to the fuel input of the hydrogen-powered vehicle.

15. The fuel storage module of claim 14 wherein the second layer comprises aligned fibers and is free of a matrix.

16. The fuel storage module of claim 14 wherein the second layer comprises a filament wound fiber layer.

17. The fuel storage module of claim 14 wherein the second layer has opposing top and bottom end portions, and the end closure is a first end closure coupled to the top end portion, and the storage module further comprising a second end closure coupled to the bottom end portion of the second layer.

18. The fuel storage module of claim 14 wherein the inner boss and the outer boss of the end closure are nested and concentric to each other.
