Abstract

In some embodiments, a lighting assembly including at least one light-emitting device positioned within a housing is disclosed, wherein the housing is designed to allow an ambient environment to pass into the housing and transfer heat from the at least one light-emitting device. The light-emitting area of the light-emitting device may be sealed from the ambient environment. In some embodiments, the housing may include at least one recess, port, or other opening configured to allow a liquid or gas to promote heat transfer from the light-emitting device. In some embodiments, a vehicle, a marine system, or other systems may include at least one lighting assembly as contemplated herein.

Claims (261)

1. A lighting system, comprising:

a housing, wherein the housing is a single body and wherein the housing has a generally flat back face;

holes extending through the housing, wherein the holes are configured for accepting housing fasteners for attaching the housing to a hull of a marine vehicle when the housing is attached to the hull;

a chip-on-board light-emitting device, comprising:

a substrate including mounting holes;

a light-emitting area;

a template surrounding the light-emitting area;

a lens element positioned adjacent to the housing;

a voltage converter configured to convert a direct current input voltage to a direct current output voltage for operating the chip-on-board light-emitting device;

a first seal formed between a retaining element and the lens element and a second seal formed between the lens element and the housing;

a second housing comprising a metal;

a second chip-on-board light-emitting device comprising

a second substrate, wherein the second substrate is metal;

a second light-emitting area;

a second lens element positioned adjacent to the second housing; wherein:

the chip-on-board light-emitting device is attached to the housing by fasteners and the chip-on-board light-emitting device is positioned within the housing;

the mounting holes of the substrate are positioned beyond the template;

the chip-on-board light-emitting device has a power consumption of at least 50 watts;

the voltage converter is external to the housing.

2. The lighting system according to claim 1 , further comprising

a reflector element positioned between the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the lens element

wherein the retaining element comprises a ring-shaped retaining element configured to retain the lens element relative to the housing.

3. The lighting system according to claim 2 , wherein:

the ring-shaped retaining element is configured to compress the lens element toward the housing;

the first seal is formed by a sealant element compressed between the ring-shaped retaining element and the lens element.

4. The lighting system according to claim 3 , wherein the flat back face is configured to contact the hull of the marine vehicle when the housing is attached to the hull.

5. The lighting system according to claim 1 , wherein:

the chip-on-board light-emitting device is configured to emit more than one color of light; and

the second chip-on-board light-emitting device is configured to emit more than one color of light.

6. The lighting system according to claim 5 , wherein:

the chip-on-board light-emitting device is configured to emit red light, green light, blue light, and white light; and

the second chip-on-board light-emitting device is configured to emit red light, green light, blue light, and white light.

7. The lighting system according to claim 6 , wherein each of the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the second chip-on-board light-emitting device is attached to the housing and the second housing, respectively, by threaded fasteners.

8. The lighting system according to claim 6 , wherein an outer surface of each of the housing and the second housing is generally cylindrical and the housing comprises the metal.

9. The lighting system according to claim 8 , further comprising protection circuitry configured to protect from overheating the chip-on-board light-emitting device.

10. The lighting system according to claim 1 , wherein:

the housing includes at least one port configured to allow an ambient environment to contact the substrate;

greater than 30% of the upper surface of the substrate is covered by the light-emitting area.

11. A lighting assembly, comprising:

a housing comprising a metal, wherein the housing is a single body and includes holes extending through the housing, wherein the holes are configured for accepting fasteners for attaching the housing to the a hull of a marine vehicle;

a chip-on-board light-emitting device, comprising:

a metal substrate, wherein the metal substrate includes substrate mounting holes;

a light-emitting area, wherein the light-emitting area is centrally positioned relative to the metal substrate;

a lens element positioned adjacent to the housing;

a ring-shaped retaining element configured to retain the lens element relative to the housing;

a first seal formed between the ring-shaped retaining element and the lens element and a second seal formed between the lens element and the housing;

wherein:

the chip-on-board light-emitting device is attached to the housing by one or more substrate fasteners positioned through one or more of the substrate mounting holes;

the chip-on-board light-emitting device is positioned within the housing;

the chip-on-board light-emitting device has a power consumption of at least 50 watts.

12. The lighting assembly according to claim 11 , wherein the one or more substrate fasteners comprise one or more screws or one or more bolts.

13. The lighting assembly according to claim 12 , wherein:

the ring-shaped retaining element is configured to compress the lens element toward the housing;

the first seal is formed by a sealant element compressed between the ring-shaped retaining element and the lens element.

14. The lighting assembly according to claim 13 , wherein a distance between the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the lens element is between 0.25 inches and 0.5 inches.

15. The lighting assembly according to claim 12 , wherein the housing has an outer surface that is generally cylindrical.

16. The lighting assembly according to claim 11 , further comprising:

a second housing, the second housing comprising a second metal; a second chip-on-board light-emitting device comprising:

a second substrate;

a second light-emitting area;

at least one voltage converter configured to operate the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the second chip-on-board light-emitting device;

wherein:

the second chip-on-board light-emitting device is attached to the second housing by one or more second substrate fasteners;

an outer surface of the second housing is generally cylindrical;

the second chip-on-board light-emitting device is positioned within a generally cylindrical portion of the second housing;

the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the second chip-on-board light-emitting device have a collective power consumption of at least 100 watts.

17. The lighting assembly according to claim 16 , wherein a distance between the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the lens element is greater than 0.5 inches.

18. The lighting assembly according to claim 16 , wherein the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the second chip-on-board light-emitting device have a collective power consumption of at least 200 watts.

19. The lighting assembly according to claim 16 , wherein the chip-on-board light-emitting device further comprises:

a template surrounding the light-emitting area, wherein the metal substrate extends beyond the template and the substrate mounting holes are positioned beyond the template;

solder pads positioned adjacent to the light-emitting area.

20. The lighting assembly according to claim 19 , further comprising a reflector element positioned between the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the lens element.

21. The lighting assembly according to claim 20 , wherein the at least one voltage converter has a power output of at least 200 watts;

the lighting assembly further comprises protection circuitry configured to protect from overheating the chip-on-board light-emitting device.

22. The lighting assembly according to claim 16 , wherein the ring-shaped retaining element is configured to compress the lens element toward the housing.

23. The lighting assembly according to claim 11 , wherein:

the housing includes at least one port configured to allow an ambient environment to contact the metal substrate;

greater than 30% of the upper surface of the metal substrate is covered by the light-emitting area.

24. The lighting system according to claim 16 , wherein the chip-on-board light-emitting device includes electrical tabs extending beyond the template.

25. The lighting assembly according to claim 24 , wherein the housing and the second housing are configured to be attached to a transom of a boat.

26. The lighting assembly according to claim 25 , wherein the chip-on-board light-emitting device is configured to emit red light, green light, blue light, and white light.

27. The lighting assembly according to claim 17 , wherein the housing and the second housing are configured to be attached to a transom of a boat.

28. The lighting assembly according to claim 19 , wherein the housing and the second housing are configured to be attached to a transom of a boat.

29. The lighting assembly according to claim 11 , further comprising:

a second chip-on-board light-emitting device comprising:

a second substrate;

a second light-emitting area;

a second lens element positioned adjacent to the housing;

at least one voltage converter configured to operate the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the second chip-on-board light-emitting device;

wherein:

the second chip-on-board light-emitting device is attached to the housing by one

or more second substrate fasteners;

an outer surface of the housing is generally cubic;

the second chip-on-board light-emitting device is positioned within the housing;

the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the second chip-on-board light-emitting device have a collective power consumption of at least 100 watts.

30. The lighting assembly according to claim 29 , wherein a distance between the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the lens element is greater than 0.5 inches.

31. The lighting assembly according to claim 29 , wherein the collective power consumption of the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the second chip-on-board light-emitting device have a power consumption of is at least 200 watts.

32. The lighting assembly according to claim 29 , wherein

the chip-on-board light-emitting device further comprises:

a template surrounding at least a portion of the light-emitting area;

electrical tabs extending beyond the template, wherein the electrical tabs are electrically connected to wires;

the chip-on-board light-emitting device is configured to emit more than one color of light.

33. The lighting assembly according to claim 29 , further comprising a reflector element positioned between the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the lens element.

34. The lighting assembly according to claim 33 , wherein:

the at least one voltage converter has a power output of at least 200 watts;

the lighting assembly further comprises protection circuitry configured to protect against overheating the chip-on-board light-emitting device.

35. The lighting assembly according to claim 33 , wherein:

the ring-shaped retaining element is configured to compress the lens element toward the housing;

the first seal is formed by a sealant element compressed between the ring-shaped retaining element and the lens element.

36. The lighting system according to claim 32 , wherein the chip-on-board light-emitting device is configured to emit red light, green light, blue light, and white light.

37. The lighting assembly according to claim 35 , wherein:

the housing is configured to be attached to a transom of a boat;

the chip-on-board light-emitting device is electrically connected to the housing.

38. A lighting assembly, comprising:

a housing comprising a metal, wherein the housing is a single body;

holes extending through the housing, wherein the holes are configured for accepting fasteners for attaching the housing to a hull of a marine vehicle;

a chip-on-board light-emitting device, comprising:

a substrate;

a light-emitting area;

a template surrounding the light-emitting area;

a lens element positioned adjacent to the housing;

a first seal formed between a retaining element and the lens element and a second seal formed between the lens element and the housing;

wherein:

the chip-on-board light-emitting device is attached to the housing by one or more substrate fasteners;

an outer surface of the housing is generally cubic;

the chip-on-board light-emitting device has a power consumption of at least 50 watts.

39. The lighting assembly according to claim 38 , wherein

the retaining element comprises a ring-shaped retaining element is configured to compress the lens element toward the housing;

wherein the first seal is formed by a sealant element compressed between the ring-shaped retaining element and the lens element.

40. The lighting assembly according to claim 39 , wherein

the one or more substrate fasteners comprise one or more screws, bolts, or rivets;

the chip-on-board light-emitting device is electrically connected to the housing.

41. The lighting assembly according to claim 38 , further comprising:

a second chip-on-board light-emitting device comprising:

a second substrate;

a second light-emitting area;

a second lens element positioned adjacent to the housing;

at least one voltage converter configured to operate the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the second chip-on-board light-emitting device;

wherein:

the second chip-on-board light-emitting device is positioned at least partially within the housing;

the second chip-on-board light-emitting device is attached to the housing by one or more substrate fasteners;

the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the second chip-on-board light-emitting device have a collective power consumption of at least 100 watts.

42. The lighting assembly according to claim 41 , wherein

the chip-on-board light-emitting device is configured to emit red light, green light, blue light, and white light; and

the second chip-on-board light-emitting device is configured to emit red light, green light, blue light, and white light.

43. The lighting assembly according to claim 41 , wherein the collective power consumption of the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the second chip-on-board light-emitting device collectively have a power consumption of is at least 200 watts.

44. The lighting assembly according to claim 43 , wherein:

the chip-on-board light-emitting device includes solder pads positioned within the template;

the substrate extends beyond the template and includes mounting holes.

45. The lighting assembly according to claim 42 , further comprising a reflector element positioned between the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the lens element.

46. The lighting assembly according to claim 45 , wherein:

the at least one voltage converter has a power output of at least 200 watts; and

the lighting assembly further comprises protection circuitry configured to protect against overheating the chip-on-board light-emitting device.

47. The lighting assembly according to claim 39 , further comprising a second retaining element, wherein the second retaining element is configured to compress a second lens element toward the housing.

48. The lighting assembly according to claim 38 , wherein:

the housing includes at least one port configured to allow an ambient environment to contact the substrate; and

greater than 30% of the upper surface of the substrate is covered by the light-emitting area.

49. The lighting system according to claim 41 , wherein:

the chip-on-board light-emitting device is configured to emit more than one color of light; and

the lighting assembly further comprises a control circuit for controlling the more than one color of light.

50. The lighting assembly according to claim 44 , wherein the housing is configured to be attached to the a transom of a boat and the housing includes a flat back surface.

51. The lighting assembly according to claim 41 , wherein:

each of the substrates of the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the second chip-on-board light-emitting device comprises copper;

the housing comprises aluminum.

52. The lighting system according to claim 42 , wherein:

the chip-on-board light-emitting device further comprises electrical tabs extending beyond the template, wherein the electrical tabs are electrically connected to wires;

the lighting assembly further comprises a control circuit for controlling the multiple colors of light.

53. The lighting assembly according to claim 42 , wherein the housing is configured to be attached to a transom of a boat.

54. A lighting assembly, comprising:

a housing comprising a metal;

holes extending through the housing, wherein the holes are configured for accepting fasteners for attaching the housing to a hull of a marine vehicle;

a chip-on-board light-emitting device, comprising:

a metal substrate;

a light-emitting area;

a template surrounding at least a portion of the light-emitting area;

a lens element positioned adjacent to the housing;

a ring-shaped retaining element configured to retain the lens element relative to the housing;

a first seal formed between the ring-shaped retaining element and the lens element and a second seal formed between the lens element and the housing;

wherein:

the chip-on-board light-emitting device is attached to the housing by one or more substrate fasteners;

wherein the chip-on-board light-emitting device is electrically connected to the housing;

the chip-on-board light-emitting device is positioned within the housing;

the chip-on-board light-emitting device has a power consumption of at least 50 watts.

55. The lighting assembly according to claim 54 , wherein:

the ring-shaped retaining element is configured to compress the lens element toward the housing;

the first seal is formed by a sealant element compressed between the ring- shaped retaining element and the lens element.

56. The lighting assembly according to claim 55 , wherein:

the one or more substrate fasteners comprise one or more screws, bolts, or rivets;

the metal substrate is electrically connected to the housing.

57. The lighting assembly according to claim 54 , wherein the housing has an outer surface that is generally cylindrical.

58. The lighting assembly according to claim 54 , further comprising:

a second housing,

a second chip-on-board light-emitting device comprising:

a second substrate;

a second light-emitting area;

at least one voltage converter configured to operate the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the second chip-on-board light-emitting device;

wherein:

the second chip-on-board light-emitting device is attached to the second housing by one or more second substrate fasteners;

an outer surface of the second housing is generally cylindrical;

the second chip-on-board light-emitting device is positioned within a generally cylindrical portion of the second housing;

the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the second chip-on-board light-emitting device collectively have a collective power consumption of at least 100 watts.

59. The lighting assembly according to claim 58 , wherein the housing includes a flat back face.

60. The lighting assembly according to claim 58 , wherein:

the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the second chip-on-board light-emitting device have a collective power consumption of at least 200 watts;

the metal substrate extends beyond the template and includes substrate mounting holes;

the chip-on-board light-emitting device includes solder pads positioned within the template.

61. The lighting assembly according to claim 58 , further comprising:

a reflector element positioned between the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the lens element;

protection circuitry configured to protect from overheating the chip-on-board light-emitting device.

62. The lighting assembly according to claim 61 , wherein the at least one voltage converter has a power output of at least 200 watts.

63. The lighting assembly according to claim 62 , wherein the ring-shaped retaining element is configured to compress the lens element toward the housing.

64. The lighting assembly according to claim 54 , wherein:

the housing includes at least one port configured to allow an ambient environment to contact the metal substrate;

greater than 30% of the upper surface of the metal substrate is covered by the light-emitting area.

65. A lighting assembly, comprising:

a housing comprising a metal, wherein the housing has a generally flat back face configured to contact a hull of a marine vehicle when the housing is attached to the hull;

holes extending through the housing, wherein the holes are configured for accepting housing fasteners for attaching the housing to the hull of the marine vehicle;

a chip-on-board light-emitting device, comprising:

a metal substrate;

a light-emitting area;

a template surrounding at least a portion of the light-emitting area;

solder pads positioned within the template;

a lens element positioned adjacent to the housing;

a ring-shaped retaining element configured to retain the lens element relative to the housing;

a first seal formed between the ring-shaped retaining element and the lens element and a second seal formed between the lens element and the housing;

wherein:

the chip-on-board light-emitting device is attached to the housing by one or more fasteners;

the chip-on-board light-emitting device is positioned within the housing;

the chip-on-board light-emitting device has a power consumption of at least 50 watts.

66. The lighting assembly according to claim 65 , wherein;

the metal substrate extends beyond the template and includes mounting holes.

67. The lighting assembly according to claim 66 , wherein:

the ring-shaped retaining element is configured to compress the lens element toward the housing;

the first seal is formed by a sealant element compressed between the ring-shaped retaining element and the lens element.

68. The lighting assembly according to claim 65 , wherein:

the one or more fasteners comprise one or more screws, bolts, or rivets;

the chip-on-board light-emitting device is electrically connected to the housing.

69. The lighting assembly according to claim 65 , further comprising:

a second housing;

a second chip-on-board light-emitting device comprising:

a second substrate;

a second light-emitting area;

at least one voltage converter configured to operate the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the second chip-on-board light-emitting device;

wherein:

the second chip-on-board light-emitting device is attached to the second housing by one or more second fasteners;

an outer surface of the second housing is generally cylindrical;

the second chip-on-board light-emitting device is positioned within a generally cylindrical portion of the second housing.

70. The lighting assembly according to claim 65 , wherein the metal substrate further comprises access holes.

71. The lighting assembly according to claim 69 , wherein:

the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the second chip-on-board light-emitting device have a collective power consumption of at least 200 watts.

72. The lighting assembly according to claim 69 , wherein:

the at least one voltage converter has a power output of at least 200 watts;

the lighting assembly further comprises:

protection circuitry configured to protect from overheating the chip-on-board light-emitting device;

a reflector element positioned between the chip-on-board light-emitting device and the lens element.

73. The lighting assembly according to claim 68 , wherein the metal substrate is electrically connected to the housing.

74. The lighting assembly according to claim 65 , wherein

the housing includes at least one port configured to allow an ambient environment to contact the metal substrate;

greater than 30% of the upper surface of the substrate is covered by the light-emitting area.

75. The lighting system according to claim 24 , wherein the metal substrate further comprises access holes.

76. The lighting system according to claim 54 , wherein the metal substrate further comprises access holes.
