Abstract

A first mobile communication device is configured to transmit video and audio content to a second mobile communication device utilizing a server. The first mobile communication device, via the server, transmits a share request or “knock” with the second mobile communication device. The second device must either accept the request or reject the request. If the second mobile communication device accepts the knock, it transmits a share accept message to the server. The first mobile communication device then transmits the video and audio content to the second mobile communication device via the server.

Claims (39)

1. A system comprising:

a server coupled through a network to a first mobile communication device having a camera and a display and a plurality of second mobile communication devices, each having a display;

the server configured to:

process a share request from the first mobile communication device;

receive, from the first mobile communication device, a selection of contacts associated with the plurality of second mobile communication devices,

retrieve contact information corresponding to each of the plurality of second mobile communication devices based on the selected contacts,

transmit the share request to each of the plurality of second mobile communication devices using the contact information corresponding to each of the plurality of second mobile communication devices;

determine that a time out has occurred in connection with at least one share request transmitted to the plurality of second mobile communication devices;

resend the at least one share request to the plurality of second mobile communication devices for which a time out occurred;

receive, in response to the share request from the first mobile communication device, a share accept message, a share reject message, or no response from each of the plurality of second mobile communication devices;

in response to receiving at least one share accept message from at least one of the plurality of second mobile communication devices, transmit a message to the first mobile communication device to transmit content via the server to the plurality of second mobile communication devices that sent a share accept message;

receive content from the first mobile communication device; and

transmit the content to the plurality of second mobile communication devices that sent a share accept message.

2. A method comprising:

coupling a server through a network to a first mobile communication device having a camera and a display and a plurality of second mobile communication devices, each having a display;

processing, at the server, a share request from the first mobile communication device;

receiving, at the server from the first mobile communication device, a selection of contacts associated with the plurality of second mobile communication devices;

retrieving, at the server, contact information corresponding to each of the plurality of second mobile communication devices based on the selected contacts;

transmitting the share request from the server to each of the plurality of second mobile communication devices using the contact information corresponding to each of the plurality of second mobile communication devices;

determining, at the server, that a time out has occurred in connection with at least one share request transmitted to the plurality of second mobile communication devices;

resending the at least one share request from the server to the plurality of second mobile communication devices for which a time out occurred;

receiving at the server, in response to the share request from the first mobile communication device, a share accept message, a share reject message, or no response from each of the plurality of second mobile communication devices;

upon receiving at least one share accept message from at least one of the plurality of second mobile communication devices, responding by transmitting a transmit content message from the server to the first mobile communication device;

receiving content at the server from the first mobile communication device; and

transmitting the content to the at least one of the plurality of second mobile communication devices that transmitted the share accept message.

3. An apparatus comprising:

a computer containing a processor and a memory; and

a non-transitory computer readable medium that includes computer readable program code stored thereon,

wherein the computer readable program code, when executed by the processor, causes the processor to perform a method, the method comprising:

processing a share request at a server from a first mobile communication device;

receiving, at the server from the first mobile communication device, a selection of contacts associated with a plurality of second mobile communication devices,

retrieving, at the server, contact information corresponding to each of the plurality of second mobile communication devices based on the selected contacts;

transmitting the share request from the server to each of the plurality of second mobile communication devices using the contact information corresponding to each of the plurality of second mobile communication devices;

determining, at the server, that a time out has occurred in connection with at least one share request transmitted to the plurality of second mobile communication devices;

resending the at least one share request from the server to the plurality of second mobile communication devices for which a time out occurred;

receiving a share accept message, a share reject message, or no response from each of the plurality of second mobile communication devices at the server in response to the share request from the first mobile communication device;

in response to receiving the share accept message from at least one of the plurality of second mobile communication devices, transmitting a transmit content message from the server to the first mobile communication device;

receiving content at the server from the first mobile communication device; and

transmitting the content to at least one of the plurality of second mobile communication device that transmitted the share accept message.
