Abstract

The invention relates to a deformable display, more in particular a flexible, stretchable, and transparent deformable display based on light-emitting elements such as for example light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The invention also relates to the use and applications of such deformable display, including systems and methods making use of such deformable display. In addition the invention relates to a flexible, stretchable and transparent display being deformable in real-time while maintaining deformability.

Claims (33)

1. A method for fabricating a deformable display, the method comprising:

providing a circuit board;

providing an arrangement of pixels onto said circuit board,

providing connections between said pixels of said arrangement of pixels onto said circuit board;

removing at least part of said circuit board in areas where none of said pixels or connections therebetween are present; and

providing a thermoplastic material wherein said pixels connected with each other are embedded, wherein said thermoplastic material is transparent.

2. The method for fabricating a deformable display of claim 1 , further comprising

providing a driver module at each individual pixel of said arrangement of pixels for controlling said pixels on individual pixel level.

3. The method for fabricating a deformable display of claim 1 , further comprising

providing an arrangement of functional nodes in between said arrangement of pixels, wherein said functional nodes are connected with said pixels, wherein said pixels are light-emitting elements, and wherein at least some of said functional nodes are provided with storage capacity, an accelerator, a gyroscope, a sensor, a microphone or speaker, a piezo element, an ultrasonic component, and/or a light-emitting element.

4. The method for fabricating a deformable display of claim 1 , further comprising

providing said thermoplastic material with perforations, and/or hardened parts, and/or connecting parts, and/or mechanical adjustments or attachments, globally for the entire display or locally.

5. The method for fabricating a deformable display of claim 1 , further comprising

providing said thermoplastic material with fire-retardant material, and/or with acoustic permeable material, and/or sound absorbing material, and/or optical components, lenses, diffusers, or polarizers.

6. The method for fabricating a deformable display of claim 1 , wherein said removing at least part of said circuit board includes removing a sufficient part of said circuit board such that open spaces between the connections and the pixels are created.

7. A deformable display system comprising:

a plurality of circuit boards;

an arrangement of pixels provided onto said plurality of circuit boards such that at least a part of said plurality of circuit boards have one or more of said pixels being mounted thereon and such that said pixels are connected with each other;

wherein connections, which provide power to said pixels and/or connect two or more of said pixels with each other, are provided amongst said pixels or onto said circuit boards;

wherein amongst two or more of said pixels at least one data connection from one pixel to another is provided;

wherein said arrangement of pixels onto said plurality of circuit boards, including connections therebetween, acts as a mesh shaped carrier being deformable in any directions; and

wherein the connected pixels are embedded in a thermoplastic material, wherein said thermoplastic material is transparent.

8. The deformable display system of claim 7 , further comprising

a driver module for each individual pixel, provided onto said at least one of said plurality of circuit boards, for controlling said individual pixel.

9. The deformable display system of claim 7 , wherein an arrangement of functional nodes is provided in between the arrangement of pixels, wherein the functional nodes are connected with the pixels, wherein the pixels are light-emitting elements, and wherein at least some of the functional nodes are provided with storage capacity, an accelerator, a gyroscope, a sensor, a microphone or speaker, a piezo element, an ultrasonic component, and/or a light-emitting element.

10. The deformable display system of claim 7 , wherein said pixels are light-emitting elements such that said deformable display system is a light-emitting display system.

11. The deformable display system of claim 7 , wherein at least part of said plurality of circuit boards are flexible circuit boards, and/or said pixels are connected with each other by means conducting paths.

12. The deformable display system of claim 7 , wherein the thermoplastic material is provided with perforations, and/or hardened parts, and/or connecting parts, and/or mechanical adjustments or attachments, globally for the entire display or locally.

13. The deformable display system of claim 7 , wherein the thermoplastic material is provided with fire-retardant material, and/or with acoustic permeable material, and/or sound absorbing material, and/or optical components, lenses, diffusers, or polarizers.

14. The method for fabricating a deformable display of claim 1 , wherein said pixels include light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

15. The method for fabricating a deformable display of claim 1 , wherein said display is a liquid-crystal display (LCD), organic light-emitting diode (OLED), or a plasma display.

16. The deformable display system of claim 7 , wherein said display is a liquid-crystal display (LCD), organic light-emitting diode (OLED), or a plasma display.

17. The deformable display system of claim 7 , wherein said pixels include light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
