Abstract

A diagnostic method for monitoring changes in a fluid medium in a patient's head. The method includes positioning a transmitter at a first location on or near the patient's head, the transmitter generates and transmits a time-varying magnetic field into a fluid medium in the patient's head responsive to a first signal; positioning a receiver at a second location on or near the patient's head offset from the transmitter, the receiver generates a second signal responsive to a received magnetic field at the receiver; transmitting a time-varying magnetic field into the fluid medium in the patient's head in response to the first signal; receiving the transmitted magnetic field; generating the second signal responsive to the received magnetic field; and determining, a phase shift between the transmitted magnetic field and the received magnetic field for a plurality of frequencies of the transmitted time-varying magnetic field.

Claims (24)

1. A device for monitoring changes in a medium in a patient's head, the device comprising:

a headset, comprising:

a headband;

a housing coupled with the headband;

a processor in the housing;

a transmitter coupled with the headband and configured to transmit multiple time-varying magnetic fields comprising multiple frequencies that are harmonics of one or more fundamental frequencies, including:

a first time-varying magnetic field comprising multiple simultaneously transmitted frequencies that are harmonics of a first fundamental frequency; and

after transmitting the first time-varying magnetic field, a second time-varying magnetic field comprising multiple simultaneously transmitted frequencies that are harmonics of a second fundamental frequency; and

a receiver coupled with the headset such that it is located on an opposite side of the patient's head from the transmitter when the headset is applied to the patient's head, wherein the receiver is configured to receive the first and second time-varying magnetic fields transmitted by the transmitter;

wherein the processor is configured to:

determine at least one of a first phase shift or a first magnitude change between the transmitted first magnetic field and the received first magnetic field;

determine at least one of a second phase shift or a second magnitude change between the transmitted second magnetic field and the received second magnetic field;

generate a comparison of the second phase shift to the first phase shift or the second magnitude change to the first magnitude change, for a plurality of the multiple frequencies; and

determine, based on the comparison, whether a change in the medium in the patient's head has occurred.

2. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an accelerometer attached to the headset for detecting motion of the patient, wherein the processor is further configured to distinguish the comparison from the detected motion.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the headband is disposable and the processor is reusable.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the headband comprises a material selected from a group consisting of elastic, rubber, acrylic, latex and other flexible materials.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the receiver is housed in the housing.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine that the change in the medium in the patient's head comprises a clinically significant change; and

generate a signal to alert a user that the clinically significant change has occurred.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the transmitter is configured to transmit the first and second time-varying magnetic fields in a frequency range of 20 MHz to 300 MHz.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the medium in the patient's head comprises fluid in the patient's brain.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first fundamental frequency and the second fundamental frequency are the same.
