Abstract

A bipolar forceps includes a mechanical forceps including first and second shafts each having a jaw member extending from a distal end thereof and a handle disposed at a proximal end thereof for effecting movement of the jaw members relative to one another about a pivot. A disposable is housing is configured to be releasably coupled to at least one of the shafts and an electrode assembly is configured to be releasably coupled to the disposable housing. The electrode assembly includes electrodes releasably coupled to the jaw members. At least one of the electrodes includes a knife channel configured to receive a knife blade therethrough to cut tissue grasped between the jaw members. A tissue stop has a knife slot that aligns with the knife channel to receive the knife blade. An actuation mechanism advances the knife blade through the knife channel to cut tissue.

Claims (34)

1. A bipolar forceps, comprising:

first and second shafts each having a jaw member extending from a distal end thereof, the first and second shafts configured to rotate about a pivot to move the jaw members relative to each other between a first position wherein the jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another and a second position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween, a portion of the first shaft being bifurcated to define a longitudinal slot;

a disposable housing configured to releasably couple to the first shaft such that the longitudinal slot defined by the bifurcated portion of the first shaft is disposed within the disposable housing;

a first electrode releasably coupleable to the jaw member of the first shaft and a second electrode releasably coupleable to the jaw member of the second shaft, the first and second electrodes configured to deliver electrosurgical energy to tissue;

a knife blade configured to cut tissue; and

a knife actuation mechanism coupled to the knife blade and at least partially disposed within the disposable housing, the knife actuation mechanism configured to move the knife blade to cut the tissue.

2. The bipolar forceps according to claim 1 , further comprising a trigger operably coupled to the knife actuation mechanism and extending from the disposable housing, the trigger configured to rotate to cause the knife actuation mechanism to move the knife blade.

3. The bipolar forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second electrodes include a knife channel configured to receive the knife blade.

4. The bipolar forceps according to claim 3 , further comprising a knife guide disposed within the disposable housing and having a longitudinal knife slot that receives the knife blade to align the knife blade with the knife channel of each of the first and second electrodes.

5. The bipolar forceps according to claim 1 , further comprising a knife blade lockout mechanism disposed within the disposable housing and configured to prevent movement of the knife blade when the jaw members are in the first position.

The bipolar forceps according to claim 5 , wherein the knife blade lockout mechanism includes a rotatable safety link configured to, when the jaw members are in the first position, rotate into engagement with a pivot pin that connects the knife blade to the knife actuation mechanism to prevent movement of the knife blade.

7. The bipolar forceps according to claim 6 , wherein the safety link is configured to rotate out of engagement with the pivot pin when the jaw members are in the second position to enable movement of the knife blade.

8. A bipolar forceps, comprising:

first and second shafts each having a jaw member disposed at a distal end thereof, a portion of the first shaft being bifurcated to define a longitudinal slot;

a pivot about which the first and second shafts rotate to effect movement of the jaw members relative to each other;

a disposable housing configured to releasably couple to the first shaft such that the longitudinal slot defined by the bifurcated portion of the first shaft is disposed within the disposable housing;

a first electrode releasably coupleable to the jaw member of the first shaft; and

a second electrode releasably coupleable to the jaw member of the second shaft, the first and second electrodes configured to deliver electrosurgical energy to tissue.

9. The bipolar forceps according to claim 8 , further comprising a knife blade configured to cut tissue.

10. The bipolar forceps according to claim 9 , further comprising a knife actuation mechanism coupled to the knife blade and at least partially disposed within the disposable housing, the knife actuation mechanism configured to move the knife blade to cut the tissue.

11. The bipolar forceps according to claim 10 , further comprising a trigger operably coupled to the knife actuation mechanism and extending from the disposable housing, the trigger configured to rotate to cause the knife actuation mechanism to move the knife blade.

12. The bipolar forceps according to claim 9 , wherein the first and second electrodes include a knife channel configured to receive the knife blade.

13. The bipolar forceps according to claim 12 , further comprising a knife guide disposed within the disposable housing and having a longitudinal knife slot that receives the knife blade to align the knife blade with the knife channel of each of the first and second electrodes.

14. The bipolar forceps according to claim 9 , further comprising a knife blade lockout mechanism disposed within the disposable housing and configured to prevent movement of the knife blade.

15. The bipolar forceps according to claim 14 , wherein the knife blade lockout mechanism includes a rotatable safety link configured to rotate into engagement with a pivot pin to prevent movement of the knife blade.

16. The bipolar forceps according to claim 15 , wherein the safety link is configured to rotate out of engagement with the pivot pin to enable movement of the knife blade.

17. A bipolar forceps, comprising:

first and second shafts each having a jaw member disposed at a distal end thereof, a portion of the first shaft being bifurcated to define a longitudinal slot;

a pivot about which the first and second shafts rotate to effect movement of the jaw members relative to each other;

a disposable housing configured to releasably couple to the first shaft such that the longitudinal slot defined by the bifurcated portion of the first shaft is disposed within the disposable housing; and

an electrode assembly removably coupled to the disposable housing and configured to deliver electrosurgical energy to tissue.

18. The bipolar forceps according to claim 17 , further comprising a knife blade configured to cut tissue grasped between the jaw members.

19. The bipolar forceps according to claim 18 , further comprising a knife actuation mechanism coupled to the knife blade and at least partially disposed within the disposable housing, the knife actuation mechanism configured to move the knife blade to cut the tissue grasped between the jaw members.

20. The bipolar forceps according to claim 19 , further comprising a trigger operably coupled to the knife actuation mechanism and extending from the disposable housing, the trigger configured to rotate to cause the knife actuation mechanism to move the knife blade.
