Abstract

A system and method that uses geo-location and a rules engine to facilitate compliance to federal, state, and local regulations as well as company policies across different jurisdictions that may have different compliance regulations. A mobile workforce may use the techniques herein to manage work assignments, report activities, and to manage and track time. This technology may be used, e.g., in the transportation industry, but is not limited to this industry.

Claims (63)

1. A system comprising:

a memory having computer-readable instructions stored thereon; and

a processor that executes the computer-readable instructions to:

receive a start location and an end location of a mobile unit;

determine a route from the start location to the end location, the route comprising a plurality of set points between the start location and the end location;

compile a set of rules for a user of the mobile device to comply with along the route by:

identifying a rule that applies to the user at each of the plurality of set points, wherein the rule is based at least on a location determined from the plurality of set points; and

adding the rule to the set of rules upon determining that the rule does not already exist in the set of rules; and

add a set of recommendations to a work plan for the user to follow based upon the set of rules.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of set points comprises a latitude and longitude coordinate.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein each consecutive set point of the plurality of set points is separated by a predetermined distance along the route.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor further executes the computer-readable instructions to:

receive a start date and start time at the start location; and

associate a set point date and set point time with each of the plurality of set points, wherein the set point date and the set point time are computed based upon the start date and the start time, and wherein the rule at each of the plurality of set points is further identified based upon the set point date and the set point time at each of the plurality of set points.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein to compile the set of rules, the processor further executes the computer-readable instructions to:

determine an existing set of rules that apply to the user at the start location; and

update the existing set of rules based upon the rule identified at each of the plurality of set points to obtain the set of rules.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the rule is further based upon a total number of hours the user has worked by a start of each of the plurality of set points, and wherein at each of the plurality of set points, upon determining that the total number of hours is greater than a threshold, the processor further executes the computer-readable instructions to:

determine that a new rule supersedes an existing rule on the set of rules;

delete the existing rule from the set of rules; and

add the new rule to the set of rules.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor further executes the computer-readable instructions to:

determine that a first set point of the plurality of set points is in a new geographic region compared to a second set point of the plurality of set points;

identify another rule that applies to the new geographic region; and

add the another rule to the set of rules.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor further executes the computer-readable instructions to optimize the set of rules based upon a rule type by:

determining that a first rule and a second rule from the set of rules have a same rule type;

selecting the first rule to remain on the set of rules based upon determining that the first rule encompasses the second rule; and

deleting the second rule from the set of rules.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein selecting the first rule to remain on the set of rules and deleting the second rule from the set of rules comprises determining that the first rule and the second rule belong to a same rule family.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the processor further executes the computer-readable instructions to update the set of recommendations based upon optimizing the set of rules.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the set of recommendations comprises at least one of a number of hours left to work for the user on the route, a workday end time for the user, a number of breaks that need to be taken by the user during the workday, a time duration for each of the number of breaks, a break end time by when each of the number of breaks needs to be taken.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor further executes the computer-readable instructions to monitor compliance of the set of rules based upon data received from the user.

13. A method comprising;

receiving, by a processor, a start location and an end location of a mobile unit;

determining, by the processor, a route from the start location to the end location, the route comprising a plurality of set points between the start location and the end location;

compiling, by the processor, a set of rules for a user of the mobile device to comply with along the route by:

identifying a rule that applies to the user at each of the plurality of set points, wherein the rule is based at least on a location determined from the plurality of set points; and

adding the rule to the set of rules upon determining that the rule does not already exist in the set of rules; and

adding, by the processor, a set of recommendations to a work plan for the user to follow based upon the set of rules.

The method of claim 13 , wherein the rule is further based upon a total number of hours the user has worked by a start of each of the plurality of set points, and wherein, at each of the plurality of set points, upon determining that the total number of hours is greater than a threshold, the method further comprises:

determining, by the processor, that a new rule supersedes an existing rule on the set of rules;

deleting, by the processor, the existing rule from the set of rules; and

adding, by the processor, the new rule to the set of rules.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

determining, by the processor, that a first set point of the plurality of set points is in a new geographic region compared to a second set point of the plurality of set points;

identifying, by the processor, another rule that applies to the new geographic region; and

adding, by the processor, the another rule to the set of rules.

16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

optimizing, by the processor, the set of rules based upon a rule type by:

determining that a first rule and a second rule from the set of rules have a same rule type;

selecting the first rule to remain on the set of rules based upon determining that the first rule encompasses the second rule; and

deleting the second rule from the set of rules.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising updating the set of recommendations based upon optimizing the set of rules.

18. A non-transitory computer-readable media comprising computer-readable instructions stored thereon that when executed by a processor cause the processor to:

receive a start location and an end location of a mobile unit;

determine a route from the start location to the end location, the route comprising a plurality of set points between the start location and the end location;

compile a set of rules for a user of the mobile device to comply with along the route by:

identifying a rule that applies to the user at each of the plurality of set points, wherein the rule is based at least on a location determined from the plurality of set points; and

adding the rule to the set of rules upon determining that the rule does not already exist in the set of rules; and

add a set of recommendations to a work plan for the user to follow based upon the set of rules.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 18 , wherein each of the plurality of set points comprises a latitude and longitude coordinate.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 19 , wherein each consecutive set point of the plurality of set points is separated by a predetermined distance along the route.
