Abstract

A pitch energy module comprising one or more ultracapacitors storing electrical energy for a wind turbine emergency pitch energy event. The pitch energy module replaces at least one battery within a battery housing of a wind turbine and interfaces with the existing battery wiring harness to communicate with a control system of the wind turbine. The pitch energy module is installed without further modification to the battery housing or the battery wiring harness.

Claims (42)

1. A pitch energy module for replacing at least one battery within an electric pitch control system of a wind turbine, the at least one battery mounted in the wind turbine in a battery housing and operably coupled with a control system of the wind turbine via at least a wiring harness, the pitch energy module comprising:

a pitch energy module housing sized for mounting in the battery housing upon replacement of the at least one battery with the pitch energy module;

one or more ultracapacitors mounted within the pitch energy module housing, the one or more ultracapacitors configured to store electrical energy for a wind turbine pitch event;

at least one processor communicatively coupled to the one or more ultracapacitors; and

one or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, perform a step of automatically adjusting a voltage set-point of the pitch energy module based on a measured capacitance of the pitch energy module to thereby increase a lifetime of the one or more ultracapacitors of the pitch energy module.

2. The pitch energy module of claim 1 , wherein the step of automatically adjusting the voltage set-point comprises increasing the voltage set-point in response to a drop in the measured capacitance.

3. The pitch energy module of claim 2 , further comprising a communications adapter communicatively coupled to the at least one processor for transferring a signal comprising information indicative of the measured capacitance.

4. The pitch energy module of claim 3 , wherein the signal transferred by the communications adapter further comprises information indicative of a charge state of the one or more ultracapacitors.

5. The pitch energy module of claim 1 , wherein the automatic adjustment of the voltage-set point based on the measured capacitance maintains a substantially consistent energy level within the pitch energy module over time.

6. The pitch energy module of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is a microprocessor.

7. The pitch energy module of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first sensor configured to measure an electrical capacitance associated with the one or more ultracapacitors; and

a second sensor configured to measure an electrical resistance associated with the one or more ultracapacitors,

wherein each of the first sensor and the second sensor is communicatively coupled to the at least one processor.

8. A pitch energy module for an electric pitch control system of a wind turbine, the pitch energy module comprising:

a pitch energy module housing sized for mounting in a housing of the electric pitch control system;

one or more ultracapacitors mounted within the pitch energy module housing, the one or more ultracapacitors configured to store electrical energy for a wind turbine pitch event;

at least one processor communicatively coupled to the one or more ultracapacitors; and

one or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, perform a step of automatically adjusting a voltage set-point of the pitch energy module based on a measured capacitance of the pitch energy module to thereby increase a lifetime of the one or more ultracapacitors of the pitch energy module.

9. The pitch energy module of claim 8 , further comprising:

a first sensor communicatively coupled to the at least processor, the first sensor configured to measure an electrical capacitance associated with the one or more ultracapacitors,

wherein the first sensor transmits a signal comprising information indicative of the measured capacitance.

10. The pitch energy module of claim 9 , wherein the computer-executable instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, further perform the steps of:

periodically receiving the signal including information indicative of the measure capacitance from the first sensor; and

automatically increasing the voltage set-point based on a drop in the measured capacitance.

11. The pitch energy module of claim 10 , further comprising:

a second sensor communicatively coupled to the at least one processor, the second sensor configured to measure an electrical resistance associated with the one or more ultracapacitors.

12. The pitch energy module of claim 8 , wherein the automatic adjustment of the voltage-set point based on the measured capacitance maintains a substantially consistent energy level within the pitch energy module over time.

13. The pitch energy module of claim 8 , wherein the at least one processor is a microprocessor.

14. A pitch energy system for storing electrical energy for a pitch control system of a wind turbine, the pitch energy system comprising:

at least one wiring harness associated with a housing of the pitch control system;

a plurality of pitch energy modules, each respective pitch energy module of the plurality of pitch energy modules comprising:

a pitch energy module housing sized for mounting in a housing of the electric pitch control system; and

one or more ultracapacitors mounted within the pitch energy module housing, the one or more ultracapacitors configured to store electrical energy for a wind turbine pitch event;

at least one processor communicatively coupled to the one or more ultracapacitors of each respective pitch energy module; and

one or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, perform a step of automatically adjusting a voltage set-point of the respective pitch energy module of the plurality of pitch energy modules based on a measured capacitance of the pitch energy module to thereby increase a lifetime of the one or more ultracapacitors of the pitch energy module.

15. The pitch energy system of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of pitch energy modules comprises six pitch energy modules electrically connected in series within the housing of the pitch control system.

16. The pitch energy system of claim 14 , further comprising a communications adapter communicatively coupled with the at least one processor, the communications adapter configured to interface with the at least one wiring harness to thereby transfer at least one signal comprising a set of information associated with the one or more ultracapacitors to the pitch control system of the wind turbine.
