Abstract

A solidification substrate assembly for making a three-dimensional object from a solidifiable material includes a solidification substrate assembly. In certain examples, the solidifiable material solidifies in contact with the solidification substrate, and the tilting of the substrate and/or or the use of a peeling member facilitates separation of the substrate from the solidified material. In other examples, the solidification substrate assembly includes a film that is adjacent to a rigid or semi-rigid layer. The solidifiable material solidifies in contact with the film, and a peeling member peels the film away from the solidified material. Intelligent solidification substrate assemblies are also described in which a force sensor determines when to expose the solidifiable material to solidification energy and/or whether to use a peeling member to separate the solidification substrate from a solidified objection section.

Claims (26)

1. A multi-layer system for making a three-dimensional object by solidifying a solidifiable material, comprising:

a rigid or semi-rigid solidification substrate assembly comprising a frame and a rigid or semi-rigid translucent solidification substrate disposed in the frame, wherein the rigid or semi-rigid translucent solidification substrate comprises a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface;

a film assembly including at least one film frame and at least one film disposed in the at least one film frame, wherein the at least one film comprises a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface of the at least one film, wherein the first surface of the at least one film is adjacent to and in non-adhesive contact with the first surface of the rigid or semi-rigid translucent solidification substrate.

2. The multi-layer system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one film comprises a fluoropolymer.

3. The multi-layer system of claim 2 , wherein the fluoropolymer is one selected from the group consisting of a modified fluoroalkoxy film, a perfluoroalkoxy film, a polyvinylidene fluoride film, an ethylenechlorotrifluoroethylene film, an ethylenetetrafluoroethylene film, and a polytetrafluoroethylene film.

4. The multi-layer system of claim 1 , further comprising an air path between the rigid or semi-rigid translucent solidification substrate and the at least one film.

5. The multi-layer system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one film and the rigid or semi-rigid translucent solidification substrate are adjacent one another along a build axis.

6. An apparatus for making a three-dimensional object from a solidifiable material, comprising:

a container containing a volume of the solidifiable material;

the multilayer system of claim 1 , wherein the second surface of the at least one film is in contact with the solidifiable material;

a build platform movable along a build axis toward and away from the at least one film;

a sensor, wherein following a movement of the build platform toward the at least one film along the build axis, the sensor generates a signal indicative of a stable thickness of solidifiable material being present between the at least one film and an exposed surface of the three-dimensional object.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the sensor is a force sensor.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein at least a portion of the at least one film frame is spaced apart from the first surface of the rigid or semi-rigid translucent solidification substrate along the build axis.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the at least one film frame has an upper surface and a lower surface spaced apart along the build axis, and the first surface of the rigid or semi-rigid translucent solidification substrate is located between the upper surface and the lower surface of the at least one film frame along the build axis.

10. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the sensor is operatively connected to a controller, and the controller is operatively connected to a pattern generator such that when the sensor generates the signal indicative of a stable thickness of solidifiable material, the controller causes the pattern generator to project a pattern of solidification energy onto a surface of the solidifiable material.

11. The multi-layer system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one film has a first end and a second end spaced apart along a length axis and a third end and a fourth end spaced apart along a width axis, the rigid or semi-rigid translucent substrate is located between the first end and second end of the at least one film along the length axis.

12. The multi-layer system of claim 11 , wherein the rigid or semi-rigid translucent solidification substrate is located between the third end and the fourth end of the at least one film along the width axis.

13. The multi-layer system of claim 11 , wherein the first end and the second end of the at least one film are spaced apart from the first surface of the rigid or semi-rigid translucent solidification substrate in a direction along a build axis perpendicular to the length axis and the width axis.

14. The multi-layer system of claim 11 , wherein the at least one film frame comprises a frame surface spaced apart from the at least one film first surface along a build axis perpendicular to the length axis and the width axis, and the frame surface is spaced apart from the first surface of the rigid or semi-rigid translucent solidification substrate along the build axis.

15. The multi-layer system of claim 14 , where the at least one frame comprises an inner frame and an outer frame.

16. The multi-layer system of claim 15 , wherein the first end and the second end of the at least one film are disposed between the inner frame and the outer frame.

17. The multi-layer system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one film is one film.

18. The multi-layer system of claim 17 , wherein the first surface of the at least one film includes a relieved area in fluid communication with the atmosphere.

19. The multi-layer system of claim 1 , wherein the rigid or semi-rigid, translucent solidification substrate and the at least one film are in a fixed spatial orientation relative to one another.

20. The multi-layer system of claim 1 , where the at least one film is two films.
