Abstract

A knitted article having a first layer and a second layer is described. The first layer is formed from a first yarn having a first shrinkage rate and the second layer is formed by a second yarn having a second shrinkage rate. The shrinkage rate of the first yarn is greater than the shrinkage rate of the second yarn when subjected to heat. Upon heat exposure, the second layer forms a raised structure. The raised structures have a length that is generally perpendicular to the lateral-to-medial course-wise direction of the knitted article. Methods of forming raised structures are also disclosed.

Claims (40)

1. A method of knitting a textile comprising:

knitting at least a portion of a first layer from a first yarn having a first shrinkage rate;

knitting at least a portion of a second layer from a second yarn having a second shrinkage rate less than the first shrinkage rate; and

exposing the textile to heat to shrink the first yarn to a greater degree than the second yarn,

wherein shrinking the first yarn to the greater degree than the second yarn forms an elongated raised structure that extends perpendicular to a course-wise direction of the first yarn.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first yarn is at least twice as elastic as the second yarn.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the elongated raised structure is an ottoman.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

forming the textile into at least a portion of an upper such that the elongated raised structure is disposed on an outer side of the textile; and

securing the upper to a sole structure.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of exposing the textile to heat includes applying steam to at least a portion of the textile.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the elongated raised structure includes a first vertical region that extends parallel to a second vertical region, a valley extending between the first vertical region and the second vertical region.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the valley is at least partially formed of a third yarn that comprises a fusible material.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first layer is knitted on a back needle bed of a knitting machine and the second layer is at least partially knitted on a front needle bed of the knitting machine.

9. The method of claim 8 ,

wherein the elongated raised structure includes a first vertical region that is parallel to a second vertical region, a valley extending between the first vertical region and the second vertical region,

wherein the valley is at least partially formed of a third yarn, and

wherein the third yarn is knitted onto the front needle bed and the back needle bed.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the third yarn comprises a fusible material.

11. A method of knitting a textile comprising:

knitting at least a portion of a first layer from a first yarn having a first shrinkage rate;

knitting at least a portion of a second layer from a second yarn having a second shrinkage rate less than the first shrinkage rate; and

exposing the textile to heat to shrink the first yarn to a greater degree than the second yarn,

wherein shrinking the first yarn to a greater degree than the second yarn forms a first vertical region parallel to a second vertical region with a valley therebetween, and

wherein the valley is at least partially formed from a third yarn that comprises a fusible material.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first yarn is at least twice as elastic as the second yarn.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein each of the first vertical region and the second vertical region is an ottoman.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the third yarn further comprises a polyester yarn.

15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising: forming the textile into at least a portion of an upper such that the first vertical region and the second vertical region are each disposed on an outer side of the textile.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising securing the upper to a sole structure.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the step of exposing the textile to heat includes applying steam to at least a portion of the textile.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first layer is knitted on a back needle bed of a knitting machine and the second layer is at least partially knitted on a front needle bed of the knitting machine.

19. A method of knitting a textile comprising:

knitting at least a portion of a first layer from a first yarn having a first shrinkage rate;

knitting at least a portion of a second layer from a second yarn having a second shrinkage rate less than the first shrinkage rate; and

exposing the textile to heat, wherein the exposing the textile to heat forms a first length of a first vertical region that extends parallel to a second length of a second vertical region in the textile,

wherein the first length is longer than a first width of the first vertical region,

wherein the second length is longer than a second width of the second vertical region, and

wherein a valley extends between the first vertical region and the second vertical region.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the first yarn is fused to a third yarn on a first side of the valley, and wherein the second yarn is fused to the third yarn on a second side of the valley.
