Abstract

Within many applications impulse radio based ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) transmission offers significant benefits for very short range high data rate communications when compared with existing standards and protocols. In many of these applications the main design goals are very low power consumption and very low complexity design for easy integration and cost reduction. Digitally programmable IR-UWB transmitters using an on-off keying modulation scheme on a 0.13 microns CMOS process operating on 1.2V supply and yielding power consumption as low as 0.9 mW at a 10 Mbps data rate with dynamic power control are enabled. The IR-UWB transmitters support new frequency hopping techniques providing more efficient spectrum usage and dynamic allocation of the spectrum when transmitting in highly congested frequency bands. Biphasic scrambling is also introduced for spectral line reduction. Additionally, an energy detection receiver for IR-UWB is presented to similarly meet these design goals whilst being adaptable to address IR-UWB transmitter specificity.

Claims (74)

1. A wireless device comprising:

an antenna;

a radio frequency (RF) transmitter circuit and a RF receiver circuit;

a control circuit for controlling operation of the RF transmitter circuit and the RF receiver circuit; and

a memory coupled to the control circuit storing a first template waveform and a second template waveform; wherein

the RF transmitter circuit comprises a first plurality of non-overlapping signal generation circuits where each non-overlapping signal generation circuit of the first plurality of non-overlapping signal generation circuits is associated with a predetermined portion of the RF transmitter circuit;

the RF receiver circuit comprises a first plurality of non-overlapping signal generation circuits where each non-overlapping signal generation circuit of the first plurality of non-overlapping signal generation circuits is associated with a predetermined portion of the RF receiver circuit;

the first template waveform defines first timing data relating to when to power up or power down each non-overlapping signal generation circuit of the first plurality of non-overlapping signal generation circuits; and

the second template waveform defines second timing data relating to when to power up or power down each non-overlapping signal generation circuit of the second plurality of non-overlapping signal generation circuits.

2. The wireless device according to claim 1 , further comprising

a variable gain amplifier coupled to the antenna for amplifying a plurality of pulses to be transmitted by the device generated by the RF transmitter circuit; wherein

the plurality of pulses are generated by an oscillator; and

the variable gain amplifier counteracts a frequency dependent output amplitude variation of the plurality of pulses generated by the oscillator.

3. The wireless device according to claim 2 , wherein

the oscillator is a programmable digitally controlled ring oscillator.

4. The wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein

the control circuit controls the RF transmitter circuit such that each bit of data received by the wireless device to be transmitted is converted to a plurality N pulses generated by the RF signal generator wherein each pulse of the N pulses is at a predetermined frequency of a plurality M frequencies, has a predetermined amplitude, and has a predetermined pulse length;

N≥2 and M≥2; and

M and N are integers.

5. The wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein

the control circuit controls the RF transmitter circuit such that:

each bit of data received by the wireless device to be transmitted is converted to a plurality N pulses generated by a RF signal generator wherein each pulse of the N pulses is at a predetermined frequency of a plurality M frequencies, has a predetermined amplitude, and has a predetermined pulse length; and

a bit and an immediately sequential bit have different emitted power spectra;

N≥2 and M≥2; and

M and N are integers.

6. The wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein

the memory stores a plurality of masks where each mask of the plurality of masks defines a configuration for each pulse of a plurality of N pulses to be generated by the RF transmitter circuit for transmitting a bit of data to be transmitted by the wireless device;

the configuration for each pulse of the plurality of N pulses defines a predetermined frequency of a plurality M frequencies, a predetermined amplitude, and a predetermined pulse length;

N≥2 and M≥2; and

M and N are integers.

7. The wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein

the memory stores a plurality of masks where each mask of the plurality of masks defines an output power spectrum for the wireless device and a configuration for each pulse of a plurality of N pulses to be generated by the RF transmitter circuit for transmitting a bit of data to be transmitted by the wireless device;

the configuration for each pulse of the plurality of N pulses defines a predetermined frequency of a plurality M frequencies, a predetermined amplitude, and a predetermined pulse length;

N≥2 and M≥2; and

M and N are integers.

8. The wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein

the memory stores a plurality of masks where each mask of the plurality of masks defines an output power spectrum for the wireless device and a configuration for each pulse of a plurality of N pulses to be generated by the RF transmitter circuit for transmitting a bit of data to be transmitted by the wireless device;

the configuration for each pulse of the plurality of N pulses defines a predetermined frequency of a plurality M frequencies, a predetermined amplitude, and a predetermined pulse length;

N≥2 and M≥2;

M and N are integers; and

the RF transmitter circuit generates the plurality of N pulses at the predetermined frequencies of the plurality M frequencies without up-conversion.

9. The wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein

the memory stores a plurality of masks where each mask of the plurality of masks defines an output power spectrum for the wireless device and a configuration for each pulse of a plurality of N pulses to be generated by the RF transmitter circuit for transmitting a bit of data to be transmitted by the wireless device;

the configuration for each pulse of the plurality of N pulses defines a predetermined frequency of a plurality M frequencies, a predetermined amplitude, and a predetermined pulse length;

N≥2 and M≥2;

M and N are integers; and

the control circuit establishes an output power spectrum without filtering which does not overlap one or more predetermined frequencies associated within one or more predetermined wireless standards.

10. The wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein

the memory stores a plurality of masks where each mask of the plurality of masks defines an output power spectrum for the wireless device and a configuration for each pulse of a plurality of N pulses to be generated by the RF transmitter circuit for transmitting a bit of data to be transmitted by the wireless device;

the configuration for each pulse of the plurality of N pulses defines a predetermined frequency of a plurality M frequencies, a predetermined amplitude, and a predetermined pulse length;

N≥2 and M≥2;

M and N are integers; and

the control circuit establishes an output power spectrum without filtering which comprises notches at one or more predetermined frequencies associated within one or more predetermined wireless standards.

11. The wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein

the first timing data is established to reduce impact on the RF transmitter circuit generating signals to be transmitted whilst reducing power consumption of the RF transmitter circuit,

the second timing data is established to reduce impact on the RF receiver circuit generating data from received wireless signals whilst reducing power consumption of the RF receiver circuit.

12. A wireless device comprising:

an antenna;

a radio frequency (RF) circuit;

a memory; and

a control circuit for controlling operation of the RF circuit in dependence upon data stored within the memory; wherein

data stored within the memory comprises a plurality of masks;

each mask of the plurality of masks defines an output power spectrum for the wireless device and a configuration for each pulse of a plurality of N pulses to be generated by the RF circuit for transmitting a bit of data to be transmitted by the wireless device;

the configuration for each pulse of the plurality of N pulses defines a predetermined frequency of a plurality M frequencies, a predetermined amplitude, and a predetermined pulse length;

N≥2 and M≥2;

M and N are integers; and

at least one of:

the output power spectrum defined by each mask of the plurality of masks does not overlap one or more predetermined frequencies associated within one or more predetermined wireless standards such that the wireless device operate without filtering of a generated RF signal to be transmitted; and

the output power spectrum defined by each mask of the plurality of masks comprises notches at one or more predetermined frequencies associated within one or more predetermined wireless standards such that the wireless device operate without filtering of a generated RF signal to be transmitted.

13. The wireless device according to claim 12 , wherein

the data stored within the memory further comprises a template waveform;

the RF circuit comprises a plurality of non-overlapping signal generation circuits;

each non-overlapping signal generation circuit of the plurality of non-overlapping signal generation circuits is associated with a predetermined portion of the RF circuit; and

the template waveform defines timing data relating to when to power up or power down each non-overlapping signal generation circuit of the plurality of non-overlapping signal generation circuits.
