Abstract

Methods and systems are provided for power management in communication devices, particularly based on cable connectivity. A power management component in a system may be configured to obtain measurements associated with a signal path used for communication by the system via a communication port, and manage power use in the system based on the obtained measurement. Managing the power use may include determining, based on the obtained measurements, connectivity related information associated with connectivity of the system via the communication port, and applying based on the information one or more power use reduction measures, with the one or more power use reduction measures including at least transitioning between different power related states.

the sensing component is configured to alert the power management component regarding at least one condition associated with connectivity of the system via the communication port; and

the power control component is configured to apply based on the alert, at least one of the one or more power use reduction measures.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power management component is configured to, upon application of at least one of the one or more power use reduction measures, turn off one or more electronic components of the system that draw energy directly or indirectly from a power supply of the system.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein at least part of the power management component is configured to remain active and continue to monitor at least one condition associated with connectivity of the system via the communication port.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the at least part of the power management component is configured to, based on monitoring of the at least one condition associated with connectivity of the system via the communication port, turn on and/or re-activate at least one of the one or more electronic components of the system.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the obtained measurements comprise measured results at various frequencies, and wherein the power management component is configured to compare the measured results to corresponding references at least at one or more frequencies.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power management component is configured to:

compare energy at one or more frequencies with reference energy values corresponding to the one or more frequencies;

determine whether a signal is present at the one or more frequencies or within corresponding one or more frequency bands; and

determine at least one condition associated with connectivity of the system via the communication port based on the determination that the signal is present.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power management component comprises a cable presence circuit configured to determine at least one condition associated with connectivity of the system via the communication port based on measuring of voltage or current at the communication port.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power management component is configured to determine at least one condition associated with connectivity of the system via the communication port based on detecting presence or absence of a signal on the signal path.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power management component is configured to determine at least one condition associated with connectivity of the system via the communication port based on evaluating signal characteristics of a signal present on the signal path.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the power management component is configured to, upon application of at least one of the one or more power use reduction measures, periodically re-determine at least one condition associated with connectivity of the system via the communication port upon the initiation of the at least one of the one or more power use reduction measures.

12. A method, comprising:

in a communication device that comprises a communication port comprising a connector and a signal path communicatively coupled to the connector:

obtaining measurements associated with the signal path;

managing power use based on the obtained measurement, wherein the managing comprises:

determining, based on the obtained measurements, connectivity related information associated with connectivity of the communication device via the communication port; and

applying, based on the information, one or more power use reduction measures, wherein the one or more power use reduction measures comprise transitioning the communication device between different power related states.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising in response to an alert regarding at least one condition associated with connectivity of the communication device via the communication port, applying based on the alert, at least one of the one or more power use reduction measures.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising, upon application of at least one of the one or more power use reduction measures, turning off one or more electronic components of the communication device that draw energy directly or indirectly from a power supply of the communication device.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising continuing to monitor at least one condition associated with connectivity of the communication device via the communication port.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising, based on monitoring of the at least one condition associated with connectivity of the communication device via the communication port, turning on and/or re-activating at least one of the one or more electronic components of the communication device.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the obtained measurements comprise measured results at various frequencies, and further comprising comparing the measured results to corresponding references at least at one or more frequencies.
