Abstract

The method includes covering a first opening of at least one first chute using a lid, delivering air from a pressurized air source into the at least one first chute, and advancing at least one first plunger through a first end of the at least one first chute to transfer a product through a second end of the at least one first chute and into a first open side of at least one first box.

Claims (52)

1. A method of packaging, comprising:

first placing a product through a first opening of at least one first chute;

second covering the first opening using a lid;

third delivering air from a pressurized air source into at least one air inlet in the lid that is in communication with the first opening; and

advancing at least one first plunger through a first end of the at least one first chute to transfer the product through a second end of the at least one first chute and into a first open side of at least one first box.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

applying a vacuum to a second open side of the at least one first box as the at least one first plunger is being advanced, the first open side and the second open side opposing each other on the at least one first box.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

first conveying the at least one first chute on at least one first conveyor in a first direction,

second conveying the at least one first box on at least one second conveyor in a second direction; and

wherein the first direction and the second direction are substantially parallel to each other, the first conveying and the second conveying causing the at least one first box and the at least one first chute to be adjacent to each other as the at least one first plunger is being advanced, and

wherein the applying of the vacuum includes:

connecting a plenum to a vacuum source, the plenum including a face with a screen, the face being directly adjacent to the second conveyor at a location that is proximal to the at least one first plunger, the face existing in a plane that is about parallel to the first direction; and

continuously applying the vacuum to the second end of the at least one first box as the at least one first box approaches and passes by the at least one first plunger.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the covering of the first opening includes:

covering an upper portion of the at least one first chute, the first opening being on the upper portion, the first end and the second end being on opposing sides of the at least one first chute.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the delivering of the air occurs during a first duration, the advancing of the at least one first plunger occurs during a second duration, and the first duration and the second duration at least partially overlap in time.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the delivering includes delivering a pulse of the air into the at least one first chute to agitate the product while the at least one first plunger is advanced through the first end of the at least one first chute.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the covering of the first opening causes the at least one first chute to be substantially sealed, other than the first end and the second end of the at least one first chute.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

first conveying the at least one first chute in a first direction,

second conveying the at least one first box in a second direction; and

wherein the first direction and the second direction are substantially parallel to each other, and the first conveying and the second conveying causes the at least one first box and the at least one first chute to be adjacent to each other as the at least one first plunger is being advanced.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

first providing the at least one first chute, the first providing including,

defining the first opening on an upper portion of the at least one first chute by extending at least one substantially vertical wall from the upper portion.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first providing further includes:

further defining the first opening by extending at least one pair of inclined end walls from the upper portion, the at least one pair of inclined end walls being inclined away from each other to increase a size of the first opening on the upper portion of the at least one first chute.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first providing further includes:

forming a first side wall and a second side wall with a first opposing pair of walls; and

forming a top wall and a bottom wall with a second opposing pair of walls, the first opening traversing through the top wall,

the first opposing pair of walls and the second opposing pair of walls defining an inner cavity in communication with the first opening.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first providing further includes:

defining the first end and the second end of the at least one first chute with the first opposing pair of walls and the second opposing pair of walls.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transferring the product into the first opening of the at least one first chute prior to covering the first opening.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the transferring includes:

conveying at least one first cup above the at least one first chute;

superposing the at least first cup over the at least one first chute; and

tilting the at least one first cup to transfer loose pouches from the at least one first cup into the first opening of the at least one first chute, the product being the loose pouches.

15. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

erecting the at least one first box from a blank, the erecting including folding a first blank portion against a second blank portion to erect sidewalls of the at least one first box, the sidewalls being erected to define the first open side and a second open side of the at least one first box, the first open side opposing the second open side on the at least one first box.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the advancing of the at least one first plunger further includes:

aligning the at least one first plunger with the first end of the at least one first chute;

reciprocating the at least one first plunger into and out of the first end of the at least one first chute; and

moving the at least one first plunger in same direction of travel as the at least one first chute during at least part of the aligning, the reciprocating, or both the aligning and the reciprocating.

17. A method, comprising:

placing a product through a first opening of a plurality of chutes;

covering the first opening of the plurality of chutes, at a same time, using a lid;

first delivering air from a pressurized air source into a plurality of air inlets spaced apart across the lid, the plurality of air inlets being in communication with the first opening for each of the plurality of chutes;

second delivering the air from the plurality of air inlets into the first opening of each of the plurality of chutes; and

advancing at least one first plunger through a first end of the plurality of chutes to transfer the product through a second end of the plurality of chutes and into a first open side of at least one first box.
