Abstract

A surgical instrument is disclosed. The surgical instrument includes an electric motor and a control circuit. The control circuit includes a plurality of logic gates and a monostable multivibrator. The monostable multivibrator is connected to a first one of the logic gates. The control circuit is configured to alter a rate of action of a function of the surgical instrument by controlling a speed of rotation of the electric motor based on a sensed parameter.

Claims (37)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

an electric motor; and

a control circuit, comprising:

a plurality of logic gates; and

a monostable multivibrator connected to a first one of the logic gates, wherein the control circuit is configured to alter a rate of action of a function of the surgical instrument by controlling a speed of rotation of the electric motor based on a sensed parameter, wherein the function of the surgical instrument comprises an articulation of an end effector of the surgical instrument, and wherein controlling the speed of rotation of the electric motor comprises controlling the speed of rotation of the electric motor to articulate the end effector at a first non-zero speed or a second non-zero speed greater than the first non-zero speed.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of logic gates includes at least one of the following:

an AND gate;

an OR gate; and

an inverter gate.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the monostable multivibrator comprises a retriggerable monostable multivibrator.

4. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the rate of action comprises a speed of the articulation of the end effector away from a longitudinal axis of a shaft of the surgical instrument.

5. The surgical instrument of claim 4 , wherein the speed of the articulation is slowed as the end effector passes through a zone defined around a centered state of a shaft of the surgical instrument.

6. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the sensed parameter comprises a sensed position of the end effector relative to a longitudinal axis of a shaft of the end effector.

7. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the sensed parameter comprises a state of a switching device.

8. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit further comprises an asynchronous counter connected to the monostable multivibrator.

9. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit further comprises a ripple counter connected to the monostable multivibrator.

10. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a sensing device connected to the monostable multivibrator.

11. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a motor controller configured to control the speed of rotation of the electric motor.

12. A surgical instrument, comprising:

an end effector;

an electric motor; and

a control circuit, comprising:

a logic gate; and

a monostable multivibrator connected to the logic gate, wherein the control circuit is configured to alter a rate of action of a function of the surgical instrument by controlling a speed of rotation of the electric motor based on a sensed parameter, wherein the function of the surgical instrument comprises a rotation of the end effector about an axis, wherein controlling the speed of rotation of the electric motor comprises controlling the speed of rotation of the electric motor to rotate the end effector about the axis at a first non-zero speed or a second non-zero speed greater than the first non-zero speed.

13. The surgical instrument of claim 12 , wherein the logic gate includes at least one of the following:

an AND gate;

an OR gate; and

an inverter gate.

14. The surgical instrument of claim 12 , wherein the monostable multivibrator comprises a retriggerable monostable multivibrator.

15. The surgical instrument of claim 12 , wherein the rate of action comprises a speed of the rotation of the end effector.

16. The surgical instrument of claim 15 , wherein the speed of the rotation is slowed as the end effector passes through a pre-identified zone.

17. The surgical instrument of claim 12 , wherein the sensed parameter comprises a sensed position of the end effector relative to a pre-identified position.

18. The surgical instrument of claim 12 , wherein the sensed parameter comprises a state of a switching device.

19. The surgical instrument of claim 12 , wherein the control circuit further comprises an asynchronous counter connected to the monostable multivibrator.

20. The surgical instrument of claim 12 , wherein the control circuit further comprises a ripple counter connected to the monostable multivibrator.

21. The surgical instrument of claim 12 , further comprising a sensing device connected to the monostable multivibrator.

22. The surgical instrument of claim 12 , further comprising a motor controller configured to control the speed of rotation of the electric motor.
