Abstract

Fluid management systems for handling pressurized fluid connect various subsystems or subunits without the need to use reinforced tubing. The system utilizes one or more segments of unreinforced conduit that are encapsulated at various points along a length of the segment with one or more rigid encapsulating members. The unreinforced conduit may be made a disposable element while the rigid encapsulating members may be re-used. In one aspect, the encapsulating member may include a two-part valve body that surrounds and encapsulates a portion of the unreinforced conduit. In another aspect, the encapsulating member may include a two-part jacket that surrounds and encapsulates a portion of the unreinforced conduit. The two-part valve bodies and two-part jackets may be joined at various points within the system as part of the overall flow system.

Claims (20)

1. A fluid management system for handling pressurized fluid within a fluidized process, comprising:

an unreinforced polymer conduit having a lumen therein dimensioned to car the pressurized fluid in connection with a pharmaceutical or biological production process, the unreinforced polymer conduit having a cross-shape;

a two-part jacket comprising a first half and a second half, the first and second halves form a cross-shaped assembly and a passageway comprising a cross-shape, the first half defining a semi-circular inner surface, the second half defining a semi-circular inner surface, the first half and the second half configured to mate with each other with their respective inner surfaces together defining the passageway through the two-part jacket which matches an exterior shape of the unreinforced polymer conduit and contacts and surrounds the unreinforced polymer conduit to encapsulate the unreinforced polymer conduit and provide resistance to expansion of the unreinforced polymer conduit; and

wherein the first and second halves are held together with a pair of fasteners for securing the two-part jacket in a closed state.

2. The fluid management system of claim 1 , wherein the first and second halves are further held together with a pair of projections that extend from the second half and are inserted into corresponding recesses located in the first half, the pair of projections comprise male dowels.

The fluid management system of claim 1 , wherein the first and second halves are further held together with a pair of projections that extend from the second half and are inserted into corresponding recesses located in the first half, a friction fit is formed between the projections and the recess.

4. The fluid management system of claim 1 , wherein flanges are disposed at respective ends of the first half and the second half of the two-part jacket.

5. The fluid management system of claim 1 , wherein the two-part jacket comprises end flanges disposed at respective ends of the first half and the second half and wherein the unreinforced polymer conduit comprises respective flanges configured to fit within the end flanges of the two-part jacket.

The fluid management system of claim 1 , wherein the pair of fasteners each comprise a threaded latch and a knob, the threaded latch including a first end and a second end, the knob being affixed to the second end of the threaded latch, the first end of the threaded latch being received within a recess formed in the first half, the threaded latches being pivotable and rotatable into respective notches located in the second half, the pair of fasteners can be loosened to open the two-part jacket to replace the unreinforced polymer conduit contained therein with another segment of unreinforced polymer conduit.

7. The fluid management system of claim 1 , wherein the unreinforced polymer conduit comprises a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), thermoplastic rubber (TPR), or silicone.

8. The fluid management system of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor housing disposed in at least one of the first half and the second half, the sensor housing configured to receive a sensor therein.

9. A fluid management system for handling pressurized fluid within a fluidized process comprising:

a two-part jacket comprising a first half and a second half, the first half defining a semi-circular inner surface, the second half defining a semi-circular inner surface, the first half and the second half configured to mate with each other to define a passageway through the two-part jacket, wherein the first and second halves form a cross-shaped assembly and the passageway comprises a cross-shape, and wherein the first and second halves are held together with a pair of fasteners for securing the two-part jacket in a closed state; and

a segment of unreinforced polymer conduit having a lumen therein dimensioned to carry the pressurized fluid therein, the segment of unreinforced polymer conduit having a cross-shape, the segment of unreinforced polymer conduit disposed within the cross-shaped passageway of the two-part jacket;

wherein the passageway through the two-part jacket matches an exterior shape of the segment of unreinforced polymer conduit and contacts and surrounds the segment of unreinforced polymer conduit to encapsulate the segment of unreinforced polymer conduit and provide resistance to expansion of the segment of unreinforced polymer conduit.

10. The fluid management system of claim 9 , wherein the first and second halves further include a pair of projections that extend from the second half and are inserted into corresponding recesses located in the first half, the pair of projections comprise male dowels.

11. The fluid management system of claim 9 , wherein the first and second halves further include a pair of projections that extend from the second half and are inserted into corresponding recesses located in the first half, a friction fit is formed between the projections and the recess.

12. The fluid management system of claim 9 , wherein flanges are disposed at respective ends of the first half and the second half of the two-part jacket.

The fluid management system of claim 9 , wherein the two-part jacket comprises end flanges disposed at respective ends of the first half and the second half and wherein the unreinforced polymer conduit comprises respective flanges configured to fit within the end flanges of the two-part jacket.

The fluid management system of claim 9 , wherein the pair of fasteners each comprise a threaded latch and a knob, the threaded latch including a first end and a second end, the knob being affixed to the second end of the threaded latch, the first end of the threaded latch being received within a recess formed in the first half, the threaded latches being pivotable and rotatable into respective notches located in the second half, the pair of fasteners can be loosened to open the two-part jacket to replace an unreinforced polymer conduit contained therein with another segment of unreinforced polymer conduit.
