Abstract

A force-sensing joint tensioner assembly, surgical system, and method of use is provided. The joint tensioner assembly can include a housing that is configured to receive a fluid from a pump and a movable member that is configured to translate relative to the housing as the fluid is pumped into the housing. The tensioner and/or a surgical system including the tensioner can further include a pressure sensor configured to sense a pressure exerted by the movable member as the movable member translates and distracts the patient's joint. A surgical computer system can be configured to determine a distraction distance of the joint according to a volume of the fluid pumped into the joint tensioner assembly by the pump and/or determine a pressure exerted by the movable member according to the pressure sensor.

Claims (30)

1. A joint tensioner assembly for distracting a joint, the joint tensioner assembly comprising:

a housing comprising a first movable member coupled to the housing via a first living hinge and a second movable member coupled to the housing via a second living hinge;

an inflatable bladder disposed within the housing, wherein the inflatable bladder is configured to be coupled to a pump to receive a fluid from the pump and contact the first movable member and the second movable member to cause the first movable member and the second movable member to translate relative to each other and contact patient bone when the fluid is pumped into the inflatable bladder, and wherein the housing at least partially surrounds the first movable member and the second movable member; and

a pressure sensor configured to sense a pressure exerted by the first movable member as the first movable member translates, wherein the pressure sensor is configured to provide the sensed pressure to a surgical computer system.

2. The joint tensioner assembly of claim 1 , wherein the housing is watertight.

3. The joint tensioner assembly of claim 1 , wherein the pressure sensor is selected from the group consisting of a strain gage, a load cell, or a combination thereof.

4. A surgical system comprising:

a pump;

a joint tensioner assembly for distracting a joint, the joint tensioner assembly comprising a housing, the housing comprising a first movable member coupled to the housing via a first living hinge and a second movable member coupled to the housing via a second living hinge

an inflatable bladder disposed within the housing, wherein the inflatable bladder is configured to be coupled to the pump to receive a fluid from the pump and contact the first movable member and the second movable member to cause the first movable member and the second movable member to translate relative to each other and contact patient bone when the fluid is pumped into the inflatable bladder, and wherein the housing at least partially surrounds the first movable member and the second movable member; and

a pressure sensor configured to sense a pressure exerted by the first movable member as the first movable member translates; and

a surgical computer system coupled to the pressure sensor and the pump, wherein the surgical computer system is configured to:

determine a distraction distance of the joint according to a volume of the fluid pumped into the joint tensioner assembly by the pump, and

determine the pressure exerted by the movable member according to the pressure sensor.

5. The surgical system of claim 4 , wherein the housing is watertight.

6. The surgical system of claim 4 , wherein the pressure sensor is selected from the group consisting of a strain gage, a load cell, or a combination thereof.

7. The surgical system of claim 4 , wherein:

the fluid comprises an incompressible fluid; and

the surgical computer system is configured to determine the distraction distance Δd according to:

where V f is the volume of the fluid, V i is a default volume of an interior compartment of the joint tensioner assembly, and A is a cross-sectional area of the interior compartment.
