Abstract

An airfoil includes an airfoil wall that has a span between first and second radial ends and that defines leading and trailing edges, pressure and suction sides each joining the leading and trailing edges, and an internal cavity. The internal cavity is divided into at least first and second sub-cavities extending over the span. The first sub-cavity defines a venturi tube.

Claims (22)

1. An airfoil comprising:

an airfoil wall having a span between first and second radial ends and defining leading and trailing edges, pressure and suction sides each joining the leading and trailing edges, and an internal cavity,

the internal cavity being divided into at least first and second sub-cavities extending over the span,

the first sub-cavity defining a venturi tube, the venturi tube having a convergent-divergent geometry such that a cross-sectional area of the venturi tube decreases from the first radial end to a location along the span at which the cross-sectional area is at a minimum and the cross-sectional area increases from the location of the minimum to the second radial end, and

airfoil wall being formed of a ceramic matrix composite having ceramic fiber plies that locally build-up a thickness of at least one of the pressure or suction sides of the airfoil wall at the location of the minimum such that the venturi tube tapers in a tangential direction along the span from the first radial end to the location of the minimum and expands in the tangential direction along the span from the location of the minimum to the second radial end.

2. The airfoil as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first radial end is 0% of the span, the second radial end is 100% of the span, and the location of the minimum is in a range of 40% to 60% of the span.

3. The airfoil as recited in claim 1 , wherein the cross-sectional area of the venturi tube has a maximum, and the minimum differs from the maximum by 25% to 75%.

4. The airfoil as recited in claim 1 , wherein the ceramic fiber plies locally build-up the thickness of both of the pressure and suction sides of the airfoil wall at the location of the minimum.

5. The airfoil as recited in claim 1 , wherein the ceramic fiber plies locally build-up the thickness of only one of the pressure or suction sides of the airfoil wall at the location of the minimum.

6. A gas turbine engine comprising:

a compressor section;

a combustor in fluid communication with the compressor section; and

a turbine section in fluid communication with the combustor, the turbine section having airfoils disposed about a central axis of the gas turbine engine, each of the airfoils includes:

an airfoil wall having a span between first and second radial ends and defining leading and trailing edges, pressure and suction sides each joining the leading and trailing edges, and an internal cavity,

a rib joining the pressure and suction sides and dividing the internal cavity into at least first and second sub-cavities extending over the span, the rib being arced from the first radial end to the second radial end so as to define a curvature,

the first sub-cavity defining a venturi tube, the venturi tube having a convergent-divergent geometry such that a cross-sectional area of the venturi tube decreases from the first radial end to a location along the span at which the cross-sectional area is at a minimum and the cross-sectional area increases from the location of the minimum to the second radial end, and

due to the curvature of the rib s the venturi tube tapering in a chordal direction along the span from the first radial end to the location of the minimum and expanding in the chordal direction along the span from the location of the minimum to the second radial end.

7. The gas turbine engine as recited in claim 6 , wherein the airfoil wall is formed of ceramic matrix composite.

8. The gas turbine engine as recited in claim 6 , wherein the first radial end is 0% of the span, the second radial end is 100% of the span, and the location of the minimum is in a range of 40% to 60% of the span.

9. The gas turbine engine as recited in claim 6 , wherein the cross-sectional area of the venturi tube has a maximum, and the minimum differs from the maximum by 25% to 75%.

10. The gas turbine engine as recited in claim 6 , wherein the rib is convex in an aft chordal direction.

11. The gas turbine engine as recited in claim 6 , wherein the cross-sectional area of the venturi tube is bound by the rib, the trailing edge, and the pressure and suction sides of the airfoil wall.
