Abstract

An information handling system wirelessly interfaces with a location peripheral aid through primary radios that have a communication protocol, such as Bluetooth Low Energy or a wireless local area network, and through secondary radios having a low power wake and sleep using wake and sleep signals sent between the secondary radios. The location peripheral aid establishes communication with the information handling system, which reports its position to a network location to allow tracking location of the peripheral aid. The peripheral primary and secondary radio transmit and receive states operate with different profiles to manage power based upon bi-directional communications tracked over time.

Claims (58)

1. An information handling system comprising:

a housing;

a processor disposed in the housing and operable to execute instructions to process information;

a memory disposed in the housing and interfaced with the processor, the memory operable to store the instructions and information;

a wireless interface module having a primary radio, a secondary radio and a processing resource; and

a location peripheral separate from the housing and including a peripheral wireless interface module having a peripheral primary radio, a peripheral secondary radio and a peripheral processing resource, the peripheral primary radio operable to transmit identifier information to the wireless interface module primary radio using a wireless personal area network protocol; and

a non-transient memory integrated in the location peripheral and storing peripheral instructions that when executed on the peripheral processing resource:

store a wake command having a wake protocol;

transmit the wake command with the peripheral secondary radio at a first predetermined time while the peripheral primary radio sleeps;

monitor with the peripheral secondary radio for communication of the wake command by enabling receive at the peripheral secondary radio at a second predetermined time interval while the peripheral primary radio sleeps; and

in response to receiving the wake command at the peripheral secondary radio, wake the peripheral primary radio from sleep, initiate pairing by the peripheral primary radio with the wireless interface primary radio using the wireless personal area network protocol, and communicate the identifier information.

2. The information handling system of claim 1 further comprising:

a non-transient memory integrated in the housing and storing instructions that when executed on the processor:

monitors with the secondary radio for wake command; and

in response to receiving the wake command, communicates the wake command to a network location with a location of the information handling system and time stamp.

3. The information handling system of claim 2 wherein the instructions that when executed on processor further:

in response to the wake command pair with the location peripheral through the primary radio with the wireless personal area network;

retrieve the identifier information; and

communicate the identifier information to the network location.

4. The information handling system of claim 3 wherein the instructions that when executed on the processor further communicate adjustments to the first and second predetermined time intervals to the location peripheral.

5. The information handling system of claim 3 wherein the wireless personal area network comprises Bluetooth Low Energy.

6. The information handling system of claim 5 wherein the wake protocol comprises an on-off-keying modulated wireless signal.

7. The information handling system of claim 5 wherein the wake protocol comprises an amplitude-shift keying wireless signal.

8. The information handling system of claim 5 wherein the first predetermined time is based in part upon detected change of location of the information handling system.

9. The information handling system of claim 5 wherein the second predetermined time interval is based in part upon a wake command transmit length of the primary radio.

10. A method for managing information handling system peripheral power, the method comprising:

storing first, second and third radio profiles;

tracking bi-directional radio communications at a primary radio of a peripheral;

sleeping the primary radio until a secondary radio receives a wake message of a wake protocol;

applying the first radio profile at a secondary radio of the peripheral if the time to last bi-directional radio communication is less than a first threshold;

applying the second radio profile at the secondary radio of the peripheral if the time to last bi-directional radio communication is greater than the first threshold and less than a second threshold; and

applying the third radio profile at the secondary radio of the peripheral if the time to the last bi-directional radio communication is greater than the second threshold.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein:

the tracking bi-directional radio communications further comprises tracking wireless network communications by a primary radio; and

the first, second and third radio profiles comprise receive and transmit intervals of a secondary radio having a wake protocol.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the wireless personal area network communications comprise Bluetooth Low Energy protocol communications.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the wake protocol comprises an on-off-keying modulated wireless signal.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein the wake protocol comprises an amplitude-shift keying wireless signal.

15. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

tracking accelerations at the peripheral; and

adjusting the first, second and third profiles based upon sensed accelerations.

16. The method of claim 11 wherein the first, second and third profiles comprise time intervals between receive states and transmit states of the secondary radio.

17. The method of claim 11 wherein the wireless personal area network comprises a wireless local area network.

18. A location aid peripheral comprising:

a housing;

a peripheral processing resource disposed in the housing;

a peripheral primary radio disposed in the housing and interfaced with the peripheral processing resource and operable to transmit information with a first wireless protocol;

a peripheral secondary radio disposed in the housing and interfaced with the peripheral processing resource and operable to receive and transmit a wake command with a second wireless protocol; and

non-transitory memory interfaced with the peripheral processing resource and storing instructions that when executed on the peripheral processing resource:

stores first, second and third radio profiles having time intervals between transmit states and between receive states;

tracks bi-directional radio communications at the peripheral;

sleep the peripheral primary radio;

applies the first radio profile at the peripheral with the peripheral secondary radio if the time to last bi-directional radio communication is less than a first threshold;

applies the second radio profile at the peripheral with the peripheral secondary radio if the time to last bi-directional radio communication is greater than the first threshold and less than a second threshold;

applies the third radio profile at the peripheral with the peripheral secondary radio if the time to the last bi-directional radio communication is greater than the second threshold; and
