Abstract

A Virtual reality system which comprises a head mounted display and positional tracking to determine the position and orientation of the head mounted display. A player wearing the head mounted display would view a virtual world. External physical objects such as a cup can be identified and displayed inside the virtual world displayed inside the head mounted display so that a player can drink out of the cup without having to remove the head mounted display.

Claims (22)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a virtual reality headset configured to be worn on a player's head, the virtual reality headset comprising an output device;

a processing unit configured to communicate with the output device, the processing unit configured to read computer readable instructions from a non-transitory computer readable storage medium, the computer readable instructions being programmed to cause, when executed, the processing unit to:

display on the output device a virtual world using a position and an orientation of the headset;

detect a physical object in a physical world using a camera;

display the physical object in the virtual world being displayed on the output device;

receive an input from the physical object indicating movement of the physical object;

determine a location in the virtual world that the physical object belongs in the virtual world using the input without detecting the physical object using the camera, wherein the physical object is a computer mouse and wherein the input from the physical object represents its movement in a 2-D plane; and

display the physical object in the virtual world at the location.

2. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the camera is not physically attached to the headset.

3. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the camera is not physically attached to the headset.

4. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the detect the physical object is performed by identifying a pattern on the physical object.

5. A method, comprising:

displaying on an output device in a virtual reality headset a virtual world using a position and an orientation of the headset;

detecting a physical object in a physical world using a camera;

displaying the physical object in the virtual world being displayed on the output device;

receiving an input from the physical object indicating movement of the physical object;

determining a location in the virtual world that the physical object belongs in the virtual world using the input without detecting the physical object using the camera, wherein the physical object is a computer mouse and wherein the input from the physical object represents its movement in a 2-D plane; and

display the physical object in the virtual world at the location.

6. The method as recited in claim 5 , wherein the camera is not physically attached to the headset.

7. The method as recited in claim 5 , wherein the camera is not physically attached to the headset.

8. The method as recited in claim 5 , wherein the detecting the physical object is performed by identifying a pattern on the physical object.
