Abstract

An electrically heatable aerosol-generating device configured to receive an aerosol-forming article including a magnetic material, the device including: a heater element configured to heat the aerosol-forming article; an inductor; and a controller configured to measure an inductance of the inductor, the heater element being further configured to be controlled in response to a measured inductance of the inductor and to provide a predetermined heating profile based on a type of the aerosol-forming article. An aerosol-generating system including the aerosol-generating device and at least one aerosol-forming article is also provided. A method of operating an electrically heated aerosol-generating system is also provided.

Claims (46)

1. An electrically heatable aerosol-generating device configured to receive an aerosol-forming article comprising a magnetic material, the device comprising:

a heater element configured to heat the aerosol-forming article;

an inductor; and

a controller configured to measure an inductance of the inductor,

wherein the heater element is further configured to be controlled in response to a measured inductance of the inductor and to provide a predetermined heating profile based on a type of the aerosol-forming article.

2. The electrically heatable aerosol-generating device according to claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to control the heater element to provide the predetermined heating profile.

3. The electrically heatable aerosol-generating device according to claim 2 , wherein the controller is further configured to select the predetermined heating profile based on a match between a value of the measured inductance and one of a plurality of predetermined inductance values.

The electrically heatable aerosol-generating device according to claim 3 , wherein the aerosol-generating device is further configured to be used with different types of aerosol-generating articles and each of the plurality of predetermined inductance values corresponds to the type of the aerosol-forming article.

5. The electrically heatable aerosol-generating device according to claim 4 , wherein the predetermined heating profile is appropriate for the type of the aerosol-forming article received in the aerosol-generating device.

The electrically heatable aerosol-generating device according to claim 1 , wherein, based on the measured inductance of the inductor when the aerosol-forming article is inserted, the controller is further configured to determine an amount of the magnetic material and therefore the type of the aerosol-forming article.

7. The electrically heatable aerosol-generating device according to claim 1 , further comprising a conductive coil that forms both the heater element and the inductor.

8. An aerosol-generating system comprising an aerosol-generating device according to claim 1 and at least one aerosol-forming article, the article comprising:

a mouthpiece;

an aerosol-forming substrate; and

a magnetic material comprising a plurality of magnetic particles.

9. The aerosol-generating system according to claim 8 , further comprising a plurality of aerosol-forming articles, wherein each of the plurality f aerosol-forming articles comprises a different amount of the magnetic particles.

10. A plurality of aerosol-forming articles, each article for an electrically heatable aerosol-generating device, and each article comprising:

a mouthpiece;

an aerosol-forming substrate; and

a plurality of magnetic particles comprising a magnetic material having a Curie temperature of between 60 degrees Celsius and 200 degrees Celsius,

wherein said each of the plurality aerosol-forming articles comprises a different amount of the magnetic particles.

11. The plurality of aerosol-forming articles according to claim 10 , wherein the plurality of magnetic particles are provided within the aerosol-forming substrate of said each of the plurality of aerosol-forming articles.

12. The plurality of aerosol-forming articles according to claim 10 , wherein the aerosol-forming substrate comprises tobacco in the form of cast leaf sheets.

13. The plurality of aerosol-forming articles according to claim 10 , wherein the magnetic particles are present in an amount of between 1 percent and about 30 percent by weight of the aerosol-forming substrate.

14. The plurality of aerosol-forming articles according to claim 10 , wherein the aerosol-forming substrate comprises a tobacco-containing material containing volatile tobacco flavour compounds.

15. The plurality of aerosol-forming articles according to claim 10 , wherein the aerosol-forming substrate comprises an aerosol former.

16. The plurality of aerosol-forming articles according to claim 15 , wherein the aerosol former is glycerine or propylene glycol.

17. A method of operating an electrically heatable aerosol-generating system,

the system comprising:

an aerosol-forming article comprising a plurality of magnetic particles,

a heater element configured to heat the aerosol-forming article,

an inductor, and

a controller configured to measure an inductance of the inductor; and

the method comprising:

measuring the inductance of the inductor,

comparing the measured inductance with one or more predetermined values of inductance, and

controlling the heater element based on the comparison of the measured inductance with the one or more predetermined values of inductance and providing a predetermined heating profile based on a type of aerosol-forming article.

18. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the one or more predetermined values of inductance each corresponds to a type of aerosol-forming article.

19. The method according to claim 18 ,

wherein the one or more predetermined values of inductance comprises a plurality of predetermined values of inductance, and

wherein the predetermined heating profile is selected based on which of the plurality of predetermined values of inductance matches the measured inductance.

20. The method according to claim 19 , wherein the electrically heated aerosol-generating system further comprises an electrically heated aerosol-generating device comprising:

the heater element configured to heat the aerosol-forming article;

the inductor; and

the controller configured to measure the inductance of the inductor,

wherein the heater element is further configured to be controlled in response to the measured inductance of the inductor and to provide the predetermined heating profile based on the type of the aerosol-forming article.
