Abstract

The current technology relates to filter media configurations where the filter media has a surface with a treatment that increases the roll off angle of the surface for a 50 μL water droplet when the surface is immersed in toluene. Some example filter media have a fluted configuration, and some example filter media have multiple layers. Filter media having multiple layers can be single facer media, for example, where one layer is planar and another layer is fluted.

Claims (26)

1. A filter media comprising:

a substrate layer having a first surface having a roll off angle in a range of 50 degrees to 90 degrees when the first surface is immersed in toluene and a contact angle in a range of 90 degrees to 180 degrees for a 50 μL water droplet when the first surface is immersed in toluene, and wherein the substrate layer has a first edge and a second edge and the substrate layer defines a plurality of flutes extending between the first edge and the second edge.

2. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the substrate layer further defines a second surface having a roll off angle in a range of 50 degrees to 90 degrees and a contact angle in a range of 90 degrees to 180 degrees for a 50 μL water droplet when the second surface is immersed in toluene.

3. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the flutes are tapered.

4. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the flutes define ridges.

5. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the first surface comprises a UV-treated surface.

6. The filter media of claim 5 , wherein the first surface comprises an oxygen-treated surface.

7. The filter media of claim 5 , wherein the first surface comprises an ozone-treated surface.

8. The filter media of claim 5 , wherein the first surface comprises an H 2 O 2 -treated surface.

9. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the substrate layer comprises at least one of an aromatic component and an unsaturated component.

10. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the substrate layer comprises a UV-reactive resin.

11. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the first surface comprises a hydrophilic group-containing polymer.

12. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the substrate layer comprises pores having an average diameter of up to 2 mm.

13. The filter media of claim 1 , wherein the substrate layer is at least 15% porous and up to 99% porous.

14. A filter media comprising:

a first substrate layer having a first surface having a roll off angle in a range of 50 degrees to 90 degrees when the first surface is immersed in toluene and a contact angle in a range of 90 degrees to 180 degrees for a 50 μL water droplet when the first surface is immersed in toluene, and wherein the first substrate layer has a first edge and a second edge, and the first substrate layer defines a plurality of flutes extending between the first edge and the second edge and the flutes have to define flute peaks and flute valleys; and

a second substrate layer coupled to the first substrate layer, wherein the second substrate layer is planar, and the first substrate layer and the second substrate layer cooperatively define the plurality of flutes extending between the first edge and the second edge.

15. The filter media of claim 14 , the first substrate layer defining a second surface having a roll off angle in a range of 50 degrees to 90 degrees and a contact angle in a range of 90 degrees to 180 degrees for a 50 μL water droplet when the second surface is immersed in toluene.

16. The filter media of claim 14 , the second substrate layer defining a third surface having a roll off angle in a range of 50 degrees to 90 degrees and a contact angle in a range of 90 degrees to 180 degrees for a 50 μL water droplet when the first surface is immersed in toluene.

17. The filter media of claim 16 , the second substrate layer defining a fourth surface having a roll off angle in a range of 50 degrees to 90 degrees and a contact angle in a range of 90 degrees to 180 degrees for a 50 μL water droplet when the second surface is immersed in toluene.

18. A filter media comprising:

a first substrate layer defining a first surface having a roll off angle in a range of 50 degrees to 90 degrees for a 50 μL water droplet when the first surface is immersed in toluene and a contact angle in a range of 90 degrees to 180 degrees for a 50 μL water droplet when the first surface is immersed in toluene, wherein the first substrate layer has a first edge and a second edge and the substrate layer defines a plurality of flutes extending between the first edge and the second edge; and

a second substrate layer abutting the first substrate layer, the second substrate layer defining a second surface having a roll off angle in a range of 50 degrees to 90 degrees and a contact angle in a range of 90 degrees to 180 degrees for a 50 μL water droplet when the second surface is immersed in toluene.

19. The filter media of claim 18 , wherein the first substrate layer and the second substrate layer are different materials.

20. The filter media of claim 18 , wherein the first substrate has a first average pore size and the second substrate has a second average pore size, and the first average pore size and second average pore size are different.

21. The filter media of claim 18 , wherein the first surface comprises a UV-treated surface and the second surface comprises a hydrophilic group-containing polymer.
