Abstract

A microphone including a casing having a front wall, a back wall, and a side wall joining the front wall to the back wall, a transducer mounted to the front wall, the transducer including a substrate and a transducing element, the transducing element having a transducer acoustic compliance dependent on the transducing element dimensions, a back cavity cooperatively defined between the back wall, the side wall, and the transducer, the back cavity having a back cavity acoustic compliance. The transducing element is dimensioned such that the transducing element length matches a predetermined resonant frequency and the transducing element width, thickness, and elasticity produces a transducer acoustic compliance within a given range of the back cavity acoustic compliance.

Claims (26)

1. An acoustic transducer device, comprising:

a substrate;

a plurality of triangular cantilevered beams, each of the plurality of triangular cantilevered beams supported at a fixed end by the substrate and extending between the fixed end and a free end where a width dimension at the fixed end is greater than the width dimension at the free end, each of the plurality of triangular cantilevered beams comprising:

a first electrode layer;

a second electrode layer;

and a layer of piezoelectric material disposed between the first electrode layer and the second electrode layer, wherein a first free end of a first one of the plurality of triangular cantilevered beams is separated by a gap from a second one of the plurality of triangular cantilevered beams, wherein the first electrode layer extends more than two-thirds of the beam area from the fixed end.

2. The acoustic transducer device of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of triangular cantilevered beams has a beam base to tip ratio of ⅓ or less.

3. The acoustic transducer device of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of triangular cantilevered beams has a continuous taper between the fixed end and the free end.

4. The acoustic transducer device of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of triangular cantilevered beams has a thickness, and the first electrode layer and the second electrode layer are at least partially aligned along the thickness.

5. The acoustic transducer device of claim 1 , wherein the first electrode layer extends less than an entirety of the beam area.

6. The acoustic transducer device of claim 1 , wherein the second electrode layer extends less than an entirety of the beam area.

7. The acoustic transducer device of claim 1 , wherein the first electrode layer and the second electrode layer are patterned onto the layer of piezoelectric material.

8. The acoustic transducer device of claim 1 , wherein a length of the gap is less than 10 microns.

9. The acoustic transducer device of claim 8 , wherein a length of the gap is less than 3 microns.

10. The acoustic transducer device of claim 1 , comprising a compliant layer between the first electrode layer and the layer of piezoelectric material or between the second electrode layer and the layer of piezoelectric material.

11. The acoustic transducer device of claim 10 , wherein the compliant layer is parylene.

12. The acoustic transducer device of claim 1 , further comprising a second piezoelectric layer deposited directly over the second electrode layer and a third electrode layer deposited directly over the second piezoelectric layer.

13. An acoustic transducer device, comprising:

a substrate;

a plurality of cantilevered beams, each of the plurality of cantilevered beams supported at a fixed end by the substrate and extending between the fixed end and a free end, wherein the fixed end has a beam base and the free end has a tip, and a beam base to tip ratio for the beam base and for the tip is ⅓ or less such that a width of the tip is ⅓ or less of a width of the beam base, each of the plurality of cantilevered beams comprising:

a first electrode layer;

a second electrode layer;

and a layer of piezoelectric material disposed between the first electrode layer and the second electrode layer, wherein a first free end of a first one of the plurality of cantilevered beams is separated by a gap from a second one of the plurality of cantilevered beams.

14. The acoustic transducer device of claim 13 , wherein the first electrode layer extends more than two-thirds of the beam area from the fixed end.

15. The acoustic transducer device of claim 13 , wherein each of the plurality of cantilevered beams has a continuous taper between the fixed end and the free end.

16. The acoustic transducer device of claim 13 , wherein each of the plurality of cantilevered beams is a triangular cantilevered beam.
