Abstract

A fan for use in agriculture includes a housing, a motor, a propeller, a damper, and a controller. The damper is connected to the housing and is movable between open positions and a fully closed position. The controller controls the motor to rotate in a first rotational direction to cause the propeller to generate airflow in a first airflow direction through the housing from an inlet to an outlet and, upon receiving an instruction to shut down, controls the motor to rotate in a second rotational direction, opposite to the first rotational direction, to cause the propeller to generate airflow in a second airflow direction, opposite to the first airflow direction, through the housing from the outlet to the inlet, before ceasing rotation.

Claims (26)

1. A fan for use in agriculture, comprising:

a housing having an inlet and an outlet;

a motor having a rotor and a stator, the motor being fixably mounted to the housing;

a propeller fixably mounted to the motor;

a damper connected to the housing and configured to move between open positions and a fully closed position so as to allow air to pass through the housing when in the open positions and prevent air from passing though the housing when in the fully closed position; and

a control system connected to the motor for controlling the operation of the motor, wherein

the control system controls the motor to rotate in a first rotational direction to cause the propeller to generate airflow in a first airflow direction through the housing from the inlet to the outlet and, upon receiving an instruction to shut down, controls the motor to rotate in a second rotational direction, opposite to the first rotational direction, to cause the propeller to generate airflow in a second airflow direction, opposite to the first airflow direction, through the housing from the outlet to the inlet, before ceasing rotation, and

wherein rotation of the motor in the second rotational direction causes the airflow in the second airflow direction, which forces the damper to move to the fully closed position after receipt of the instruction to shut down.

2. The fan according to claim 1 , wherein the damper is disposed at the outlet of the housing.

3. The fan according to claim 1 , wherein the motor is a BLDC motor.

4. A fan system for use in agriculture, comprising:

a housing having an inlet and an outlet;

a motor supported by the housing;

a propeller configured to rotate relative to the housing to create airflow through the housing, the propeller being rotated by the motor;

a damper configured to move between open positions and a fully closed position so as to allow air to pass through the housing when in the open positions and prevent air from passing though the housing when in the fully closed position; and

a controller for controlling operation of the motor, wherein

the controller controls the motor to rotate in a first rotational direction to cause the propeller to generate airflow in a first airflow direction through the housing from the inlet to the outlet and, upon receiving an instruction to shut down, controls the motor to rotate in a second rotational direction, opposite to the first rotational direction, to cause the propeller to generate airflow in a second airflow direction, opposite to the first airflow direction, through the housing from the outlet to the inlet, before ceasing rotation,

wherein rotation of the motor in the second rotational direction causes the airflow in the second airflow direction, which forces the damper to move to the fully closed position after receipt of the instruction to shut down.

5. The fan system according to claim 4 , wherein the damper is disposed at the outlet of the housing.

6. The fan system according to claim 4 , wherein the motor is a BLDC motor.

7. A method of controlling a fan system for use in agriculture, the fan including a housing having an inlet and an outlet, a motor, a propeller driven by the motor and configured to rotate relative to the housing to create airflow through the housing, and a damper configured to move between open positions and a fully closed position so as to allow air to pass through the housing when in the open positions and prevent air from passing though the housing when in the fully closed position, the method comprising:

controlling the motor to rotate in a first rotational direction to cause the propeller to generate airflow in a first airflow direction through the housing from the inlet to the outlet; and

upon receiving an instruction to shut down, controlling the motor to rotate in a second rotational direction, opposite to the first rotational direction, to cause the propeller to generate airflow in a second airflow direction, opposite to the first airflow direction, through the housing from the outlet to the inlet, before ceasing rotation,

wherein rotation of the motor in the second rotational direction causes the airflow in the second airflow direction, which forces the damper to move to the fully closed position after receipt of the instruction to shut down.

8. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the damper is disposed at the outlet of the housing.

9. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the motor is a BLDC motor.
