Abstract

The described technology provides a system and method for automatically adjusting properties of cells of a wireless communication network to improve coverage and capacity of the network. A coverage analysis tool extracts call data from cellular network traffic information and determines, based on distances between serving cells, neighbor cells, and geographic locations of the call data, whether the serving cells are under-shooter or over-shooter cells. The network automatically adjusts antenna tilt and/or transmit power of the under-shooter/over-shooter cells to improve the network's coverage and capacity.

Claims (50)

1. At least one computer-readable storage medium, excluding transitory signals and carrying instructions, which, when executed by at least one data processor of a system in a cellular network, cause the system to:

receive cellular network traffic information, wherein the cellular network traffic information comprises geolocated call data;

determine a serving cell for one or more calls in the cellular network traffic information;

compute a first distance from the serving cell to one or more neighbor cells;

compute a second distance from the serving cell to each call in the one or more calls;

when the second distance is larger than the first distance, determine a first number of calls in the one or more calls comprising a signal strength above a first signal strength threshold;

when the second distance is smaller than the first distance, determine a second number of calls in the one or more calls comprising a signal strength below a second signal strength threshold; and

cause a node of the cellular network to automatically adjust a property of the serving cell based on the first number or the second number,

wherein adjusting the property of the serving cell adjusts a coverage or a capacity of the serving cell.

2. The at least one computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the system is part of a self-optimizing network (SON).

3. The at least one computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the one or more neighbor cells is determined based on a number of handovers or handover attempts between the serving cell and the one or more neighbor cells.

4. The at least one computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein automatically adjusting the property of the serving cell based on the first number or the second number comprises:

determining whether the first number of calls is above a first threshold number of calls, or determining whether the second number of calls is above a second threshold number of calls;

determining that the serving cell is an over-shooter cell when the first number of calls is above the first threshold number of calls, or determining that the serving cell is an under-shooter cell when the second number of calls is above the second threshold number of calls; and

applying an electrical down-tilt or decreasing a transmit power in response to determining that the serving cell is an over-shooter cell, or applying an electrical up-tilt or increasing a transmit power in response to determining that the serving cell is an under-shooter cell.

5. The at least one computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein automatically adjusting the property of the serving cell comprises determining a degree of antenna up-tilt, a degree of antenna down-tilt, an amount of transmit power increase, or an amount of transmit power decrease based on the first distance and the second distance.

6. The at least one computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein automatically adjusting the property of the serving cell comprises determining a degree of antenna up-tilt, a degree of antenna down-tilt, an amount of power increase, or an amount of power decrease to cause an actual coverage of the serving cell to match a designed coverage of the serving cell.

7. The at least one computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the system is further caused to repeatedly adjust the property of the serving cell until a designed coverage of the serving cell matches an actual coverage of the serving cell.

8. The at least one computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein automatically adjusting the property of the serving cell comprises determining a priority indicator associated with the serving cell, and determining, based on the priority indicator, whether to automatically adjust the property of the serving cell before automatically adjusting a property of another serving cell.

9. The at least one computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the priority indicator indicates an extent to which the first distance differs from the second distance, or the extent to which the first number of calls is above a first threshold number or the second number of calls is above a second threshold number.

10. A method comprising:

receiving cellular network traffic information, wherein the cellular network traffic information comprises geolocated call data;

determining a serving cell for one or more calls in the cellular network traffic information;

computing a first distance from the serving cell to one or more neighbor cells;

computing a second distance from the serving cell to each call in the one or more calls;

when the second distance is larger than the first distance, determining a first number of calls in the one or more calls comprising a signal strength above a first signal strength threshold;

when the second distance is smaller than the first distance, determining a second number of calls in the one or more calls comprising a signal strength below a second signal strength threshold; and

automatically adjusting a property of the serving cell based on the first number or the second number.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the one or more neighbor cells is determined based on a number of handovers or handover attempts between the serving cell and the one or more neighbor cells.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein automatically adjusting the property of the serving cell comprises electrically up-tilting a sector antenna of the serving cell, electrically down tilting the sector antenna, increasing a transmit power of the serving cell, or decreasing the transmit power.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein automatically adjusting the property of the serving cell based on the first number or the second number comprises:

determining whether the first number of calls is above a first threshold number of calls; and

applying an electrical down-tilt or decreasing a transmit power in response to determining that the first number of calls is above the first threshold number of calls.

14. The method of claim 10 , further comprising repeatedly adjusting the property of the serving cell until a designed coverage of the serving cell matches an actual coverage of the serving cell.

15. The method of claim 10 , further comprising determining a priority indicator associated with the serving cell, wherein the priority indicator indicates an extent to which the first distance differs from the second distance or the extent to which the first number of calls is above a first threshold number or the second number of calls is above a second threshold number.

16. A system in a wireless communication network comprising:

at least one hardware processor; and

at least one non-transitory memory, coupled to the at least one hardware processor and storing instructions, which, when executed by the at least one hardware processor, cause the system to:

receive cellular network traffic information, wherein the cellular network traffic information comprises geolocated call data;

determine a serving cell for one or more calls in the cellular network traffic information;

compute a first distance from the serving cell to one or more neighbor cells;

compute a second distance from the serving cell to each call in the one or more calls;

cause a node in the wireless communication network to automatically adjust a property of the serving cell based on the first number, the first distance, or the second distance.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the one or more neighbor cells is determined based on a number of handovers or handover attempts between the serving cell and the one or more neighbor cells.

18. The system of claim 16 , wherein automatically adjusting the property of the serving cell comprises electrically up-tilting a sector antenna of the serving cell, electrically down tilting the sector antenna, increasing a transmit power of the serving cell, or decreasing the transmit power.
