Abstract

Disclosed are systems and methods for rapid generation of simulations of a patient's spinal morphology that enable pre-operative viewing of a patient's condition and to assist surgeons in determining the best corrective procedure and with any of the selection, augmentation or manufacture of spinal devices based on the patient specific simulated condition. The simulation is generated by morphing a generic spine model with a three-dimensional curve representation of the patient's particular spinal morphology derived from existing images of the patient's condition.

Claims (29)

1. A method for creating a visual simulation of a subject's condition, the method comprising:

deriving, from a plurality of images of a subject, a curve representation of an arrangement of identified anatomical structures visible in the images, the curve representation comprising a set of three dimensional spatial coordinates corresponding to a center point of each of the identified anatomical structures; and

arranging a virtual model of each of the identified anatomical structures according to the curve representation such that a center point of each virtual model corresponding to an identified anatomical structure is included in the set of three dimensional spatial coordinates, wherein arranging the virtual models further comprises one of pivoting an identified center point of each virtual model by an amount of identified angular displacement of the corresponding anatomical structure relative to a reference point in one of the images and rotating each virtual model by an amount of identified angular rotation of the corresponding anatomical structure relative to the reference point in one of the images.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising displaying the arranged virtual models of each of the anatomical structures.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising translating a center point of each virtual model corresponding to an identified anatomical structure from an initial value to a value in the set of three dimensional spatial coordinates of the curve representation.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the virtual model of at least one anatomical structure comprises a point cloud model of the at least one anatomical structure.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the anatomical structures are vertebral bodies of a spine.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the point cloud model of the anatomical structure is not derived from a corresponding anatomical structure of the subject.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the point cloud model of the anatomical structure is derived from a corresponding anatomical structure of the subject.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the images include X-ray images in a first plane of view, and X-ray images in a second plane of view normal to the first plane of view.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising obtaining coronal Y-Z coordinates or pixels of a central vertebral line with vertebral bodies and discs identified, and obtaining sagittal X-Z coordinates or pixels.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising combining the plurality of images to construct a three-dimensional model.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

obtaining at least one four-dimensional model for a similar spine; and

analyzing the three-dimensional model based on the at least one four-dimensional model to predict movement of the spine.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the similar spine is an abnormal spine, and wherein the subject's spine is a one-level degenerative disc case and the similar spine is a two-level degenerative disc case.

13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising acquiring medical data regarding a patient, analyzing the three-dimensional model in view of the medical data to predict movement of a spine.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating instructions to construct a spinal device with a three-dimensional printer based on parameters derived from the three-dimensional model.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of images include a first image obtained in a coronal plane, a second image obtained in a sagittal plane, and a third image obtained in an axial plane.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the angular displacement comprises identifying an amount of angular displacement for each of the identified anatomical structures relative to the reference point in the image; and

wherein identifying the angular rotation comprises identifying an amount of angular rotation for each of the identified anatomical structures relative to the reference point in the image.

17. The method of claim 1 , further comprising comparing the curve representation with a curve representation of a normal anatomical structure.

18. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

predicting future changes in the arrangement of the identified anatomical structures based on the curve representation using medical data of the subject; and

updating the virtual models based on the predicted future changes.

19. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining parameters of a spinal device based on the curve representation; and

deploying the spinal device in the subject's spine based on the determined parameters.

20. The method of claim 1 , further comprising constructing the curve representation based on the images obtained in different planes.
