Abstract

A communication method and system for converging a fifth generation (5G) communication system for supporting higher data rates beyond a fourth generation (4G) system with a technology for Internet of things (IoT) are provided. The communication method and system may be applied to intelligent services based on the 5G communication technology and the IoT-related technology, such as smart home, smart building, smart city, smart car, connected car, health care, digital education, smart retail, security and safety services. A method for performing a random access procedure in a wireless communication system is provided.

Claims (62)

1. A method performed by a terminal in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:

receiving, from a base station, random access channel (RACH) configuration information for a 4-step random access procedure including first information on a number of preambles per synchronization signal block (SSB), X, and second information on a start preamble index, S;

receiving, from the base station, RACH configuration information for a 2-step random access procedure including third information on a number of preambles per SSB, X′, and fourth information on a start preamble index, S′;

identifying a first set of preambles for the 4-step random access procedure associated with small data transmission (SDT) based on the first information and the second information;

identifying a second set of preambles for the 2-step random access procedure associated with the SDT based on the third information and the fourth information;

selecting a preamble from the first set of preambles or the second set of preambles; and

transmitting, to the base station, the selected preamble.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identifying the first set of preambles comprises:

identifying whether a number of SSBs per physical random access channel (PRACH) occasion, Y, is smaller than 1;

in case that the Y is smaller than 1, identifying the first set of the preambles based on the number of preambles X with consecutive indexes associated with an SSB index per valid PRACH occasion start from the start preamble index S; and

in case that the Y is larger than or equal to 1, identifying the first set of the preambles based on the number of preambles X with consecutive indexes associated with an SSB index n per valid PRACH occasion start from a n·N preamble total /Y+S preamble index, where N preamble total is a total number of preambles used for the 4-step random access procedure.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the RACH configuration information for the 4-step random access procedure further includes information on the total number of preambles.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identifying the second set of preambles comprises:

identifying whether a number of SSBs per physical random access channel (PRACH) occasion, Y, is smaller than 1;

in case that the Y is smaller than 1, identifying the second set of the preambles based on the number of preambles X′ with consecutive indexes associated with an SSB index per valid PRACH occasion start from the start preamble index S′; and

in case that the Y is larger than or equal to 1, identifying the second set of the preambles based on the number of preambles X′ with consecutive indexes associated with an SSB index n per valid PRACH occasion start from a n·N preamble total /Y+S′ preamble index, where N preamble total is a total number of preambles used for the 2-step random access procedure.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the RACH configuration information for the 2-step random access procedure further includes information on the total number of preambles.

6. A method performed by a base station in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:

transmitting, to a terminal, random access channel (RACH) configuration information for a 4-step random access procedure including first information on a number of preambles per synchronization signal block (SSB), X, and second information on a start preamble index, S;

transmitting, to the terminal, RACH configuration information for a 2-step random access procedure including third information on a number of preambles per SSB, X′, and fourth information on a start preamble index, S′; and

receiving, from the terminal, a preamble among a first set of preambles for the 4-step random access procedure associated with small data transmission (SDT) based on the first information and the second information or a preamble among a second set of preambles for the 2-step random access procedure associated with the SDT based on the third information and the fourth information.

7. The method of claim 6 ,

wherein, in case that a number of SSBs per physical random access channel (PRACH) occasion, Y, is smaller than 1, the first set of preambles is identified based on the number of preambles X with consecutive indexes associated with an SSB index per valid PRACH occasion start from the start preamble index S, and

wherein, in case that the Y is larger than or equal to 1, the first set of the preambles is identified based on the number of preambles X with consecutive indexes associated with an SSB index n per valid PRACH occasion start from a n·N preamble total /Y+S preamble index, where N preamble total is a total number of preambles used for the 4-step random access procedure.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the RACH configuration information for the 4-step random access procedure further includes information on the total number of preambles.

9. The method of claim 6 ,

wherein, in case that a number of SSBs per physical random access channel (PRACH) occasion, Y, is smaller than 1, the second set of the preambles is identified based on the number of preambles X′ with consecutive indexes associated with an SSB index per valid PRACH occasion start from the start preamble index S′, and

wherein, in case that the Y is larger than or equal to 1, the second set of the preambles is identified based on the number of preambles X′ with consecutive indexes associated with an SSB index n per valid PRACH occasion start from a n·N preamble total /Y+S′ preamble index, where N preamble total is a total number of preambles used for the 2-step random access procedure.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the RACH configuration information for the 2-step random access procedure further includes information on the total number of preambles.

11. A terminal in a wireless communication system, the terminal comprising:

a transceiver; and

a controller configured to:

control the transceiver to receive, from a base station, random access channel (RACH) configuration information for a 4-step random access procedure including first information on a number of preambles per synchronization signal block (SSB), X, and second information on a start preamble index, S,

control the transceiver to receive, from the base station, RACH configuration information for a 2-step random access procedure including third information on a number of preambles per SSB, X′, and fourth information on a start preamble index, S′,

identify a first set of preambles for the 4-step random access procedure associated with small data transmission (SDT) based on the first information and the second information,

identify a second set of preambles for the 2-step random access procedure associated with small data transmission (SDT) based on the third information and the fourth information,

select a preamble from the first set of preambles or the second set of preambles, and

control the transceiver to transmit, to the base station, the selected preamble.

12. The base station of claim 11 , wherein the controller is further configured to:

identify whether a number of SSBs per physical random access channel (PRACH) occasion, Y, is smaller than 1;

in case that the Y is smaller than 1, identify the first set of the preambles based on the number of preambles X with consecutive indexes associated with an SSB index per valid PRACH occasion start from the start preamble index S; and

in case that the Y is larger than or equal to 1, identify the first set of the preambles based on the number of preambles X with consecutive indexes associated with an SSB index n per valid PRACH occasion start from a n·N preamble total /Y+S preamble index, where N preamble total is a total number of preambles used for the 4-step random access procedure.

13. The base station of claim 12 , wherein the RACH configuration information for the 4-step random access procedure further includes information on the total number of preambles.

14. The base station of claim 11 , wherein the controller is further configured to:

identify whether a number of SSBs per physical random access channel (PRACH) occasion, Y, is smaller than 1;

in case that the Y is smaller than 1, identify the second set of the preambles based on the number of preambles X′ with consecutive indexes associated with an SSB index per valid PRACH occasion start from the start preamble index S′; and

in case that the Y is larger than or equal to 1, identify the second set of the preambles based on the number of preambles X′ with consecutive indexes associated with an SSB index n per valid PRACH occasion start from a n·N preamble total /Y+S′ preamble index, where N preamble total is a total number of preambles used for the 2-step random access procedure.

15. The base station of claim 14 , wherein the RACH configuration information for the 2-step random access procedure further includes information on the total number of preambles.

16. Abase station in a wireless communication system, the base station comprising:

a transceiver; and

a controller configured to:

control the transceiver to transmit, to a terminal, random access channel (RACH) configuration information for a 4-step random access procedure including first information on a number of preambles per synchronization signal block (SSB), X, and second information on a start preamble index, S,

control the transceiver to transmit, to the terminal, RACH configuration information for a 2-step random access procedure including third information on a number of preambles per SSB, X′, and fourth information on a start preamble index, S′, and

control the transceiver to receive, from the terminal, a preamble among a first set of preambles for the 4-step random access procedure associated with small data transmission (SDT) based on the first information and the second information, or a preamble among a second set of preambles for the 2-step random access procedure associated with the SDT based on the third information and the fourth information.

17. The base station of claim 16 ,

wherein, in case that a number of SSBs per physical random access channel (PRACH) occasion, Y, is smaller than 1, the first set of preambles is identified based on the number of preambles X with consecutive indexes associated with an SSB index per valid PRACH occasion start from the start preamble index S, and

wherein, in case that the Y is larger than or equal to 1, the first set of the preambles is identified based on the number of preambles X with consecutive indexes associated with an SSB index n per valid PRACH occasion start from a n·N preamble total /Y+S preamble index, where N preamble total is a total number of preambles used for the 4-step random access procedure.

18. The base station of claim 17 , wherein the RACH configuration information for the 4-step random access procedure further includes information on the total number of preambles.

19. The base station of claim 16 ,

wherein, in case that a number of SSBs per physical random access channel (PRACH) occasion, Y, is smaller than 1, the second set of the preambles is identified based on the number of preambles X′ with consecutive indexes associated with an SSB index per valid PRACH occasion start from the start preamble index S′, and

wherein, in case that the Y is larger than or equal to 1, the second set of the preambles is identified based on the number of preambles X′ with consecutive indexes associated with an SSB index n per valid PRACH occasion start from a n·N preamble total /Y+S′ preamble index, where N preamble total is a total number of preambles used for the 2-step random access procedure.

20. The base station of claim 19 , wherein the RACH configuration information for the 2-step random access procedure further includes information on the total number of preambles.
