Abstract

A completely de-energizable defibrillator is provided, allowing the electrical components of the defibrillator to be electrically unbiased while the defibrillator is not in use. The de-energizing of the defibrillator can be accomplished by separating the battery from the rest of the defibrillator circuitry with an electromechanical component, such as a power switch like a magnetically-triggered reed switch or a mechanically-triggered switch. The de-energizing of the defibrillator can also be accomplished by including in the defibrillator a removable piece of insulating material between the battery and the circuitry. The de-energizing of the defibrillator can also be accomplished by a change in configuration or position of the moveable components of the AED. The preparation of the defibrillator for use triggers the circuitry to become energized. Additionally, the microcontroller unit of the AED includes features to prevent computational errors due to cosmic radiation, including lockstep processors and error detection code.

Claims (22)

1. A de-energizable defibrillation assembly, comprising:

an electromechanical component;

an energy storage element that supplies power to the electromechanical component; and

circuitry configured to generate a defibrillation waveform, the circuitry comprising a microcontroller control, element configured to run a diagnostic check upon the circuitry receiving the power from the energy storage element, wherein the circuitry is isolated from the energy storage element by the electromechanical component and wherein the circuitry is electrically unbiased when the power is not flowing from the energy storage element to the circuitry through the electromechanical component.

2. A de-energizable defibrillation assembly in accordance to claim 1 , wherein the electromechanical component comprises a switch that is in an open position when the circuitry is not in use.

3. A de-energizable defibrillation assembly in accordance to claim 2 , wherein the switch comprises a magnetically triggered reed switch.

4. A de-energizable defibrillation assembly in accordance to claim 2 , wherein the switch comprises a mechanical switch.

5. A de-energizable defibrillation assembly in accordance to claim 1 , further comprising:

one or more mobile components, wherein a removal of one or more of the mobile components from an initial position to a further position affects the electromechanical component to cause the power to flow to the circuitry through the electro-mechanical component.

6. A de-energizable defibrillation assembly in accordance to claim 5 , wherein one or more of the removable components comprise packaging provided to enclose at least a portion of one or more of electrode pads through which the defibrillation waveform is delivered to a patient.

7. A de-energizable defibrillation assembly in accordance to claim 6 , wherein the packaging comprises a pouch within which the electrode pads are stored.

8. A de-energizable defibrillation assembly in accordance to claim 6 , wherein the packaging comprises a seal.

9. A defibrillation assembly energizable through packaging removal, comprising:

an electromechanical component;

an energy storage element that supplies power to the electromechanical component;

circuitry configured to generate a defibrillation waveform, the circuitry comprising a microcontroller control element, wherein the circuitry is isolated from the energy storage element by the electromechanical component and wherein the circuitry is electrically unbiased when the power is not flowing from the energy storage element to the circuitry through the electromechanical component; and

one or more mobile components, wherein a removal of one or more of the mobile components from an initial position to a further position affects the electromechanical component to cause the power to flow to the circuitry through the electromechanical component and wherein one or more of the removable components comprise packaging provided to enclose at least a portion of one or more of electrode pads through which the defibrillation waveform is delivered to a patient.

10. A de-energizable defibrillation assembly, comprising:

a defibrillator, comprising:

an electromechanical component;

an energy storage element that supplies power to an entirety of circuitry of the defibrillator via the electromechanical component;

the entirety of the circuitry comprising a microcontroller control element and configured to generate a defibrillation waveform, wherein the entirety of the circuitry is isolated from the energy storage element by the electromechanical component and wherein the entirety of the circuitry is electrically unbiased when the power is not flowing from the energy storage element to the entirety of the circuitry through the electromechanical component.
